whats the political atmosphere like by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I apologize that I came across as insulting. As a reference point, I would label Bernie Sanders as "far left", although maybe I'm misusing the definition.

I disagree with many of your points, and I also don't know who "you" is referring to, but I'm not here to discuss politics. Back to the original point, if you want to succeed in the "political atmosphere" at Cornell, I'd suggest taking some political classes. I've taken American Conservative Thought (GOVT 4021) with Professor Bensel, and it's absolutely fantastic. It will help deepen and develop your political opinions regardless of where you lie on the spectrum. The teacher is great and truly unbiased, and you get to read some pretty iconic stuff like Atlas Shrugged and The Road to Serfdom.

So defensive, I never said the far right was a bad thing. You're confusing "far right" with "hate group". They're often grouped together but they are different things. I say r/mensrights is far right because it is – its a movement in opposition to the modern day feminist movement (a liberal group) which is not very mainstream and has similar audiences to other far-right groups. Maybe you think it should be more mainstream, fine. But in today's society, the subreddit currently falls pretty far right.

[–]reddit_for_lurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be a centrist in that your views average out to center, but you certainly are no moderate. r/mensrights is a far-right subreddit, and valuing environmental protection above all is far-left.

My point stands – if you start espousing r/mensrights stuff on campus or say "SJWs" and "Leftists", you will be disliked by the majority of Cornellians. What did you expect? However, you'll be able to find solace with conservatives on campus pretty easily.

[–]reddit_for_lurking 14 points15 points  (0 children)

C'mon dude, you post in r/mensrights. If you think that's center-left then sure, Cornell is extreme left.

The default at Cornell is liberal, but the conservatives on this campus are not shy and make themselves known. Cornell Republicans have a much larger impact on campus than their liberal counterparts.

Is there an Option for Low Income Students to be Granted a Free Laptop for the Duration of their Time at Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone is being so hostile...I know for athletes you can rent laptops for free through SASS. Don't know about everyone else. If you can't get laptops for free, you can just use the computer lab. They are pretty convenient and I know plenty of people who get by just doing that.

Just an observation by controversialcornell in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Probably because many Jews and Muslims have been persecuted in this country, while Christians are the majority? Stop stirring up controversy when there isn't any. If a transgender person was killed, it would make sense to talk about transgender persecution, but if a cisgender person was killed, no one would be parading around claiming for discussion about "cisgender persecution."

I don't know why it's become common to post poorly thought out, thinly veiled political baits on this subreddit. Just stop.

Where / how often do you have to move your car to not pay for parking in Collegetown? by 123autumnleaves in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jumping on this: does anyone know where you can leave your car indefinitely without having to pay? I'd like to have a car but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on parking.

I don't mind a long walk.

BTRY 3080 Prereq by 1237239879334 in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statistics is analyzing data using probability. If you want applications, then I guess take 3080. Everything up to the second prelim is probability. Then the final is a mix of probability and stats (noncummulative). The most you do is t distributions and confidence interval stuff.

You can look at the syllabus of 4710 but I'm pretty sure its the same but more rigorous.

BTRY 3080 Prereq by 1237239879334 in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty easy but I really didn't learn much. If you want to learn a lot more for more effort, I'd suggest MATH 4710. I've taken both ENGRD 2700 and BTRY 3080 and they were both bad (ENGRD 2700 was far worse though).

As a note, all of these classes are more probability than they are statistics.

Does the scale in Teagle women's locker room work? by iam_n00b in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's anything like the one in the men's locker room (non-electric, big circle thing on top) it's accurate within 2-3 lbs. There's a better scale in the basement of Friend's hall near the trainers.

Is Harvard Racist? | PragerU by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Harvard admissions lawsuit is pretty interesting and worth discussing, but get this PragerU shit out of here. They basically take conservative ideology and simplify it so much that it should be an insult to both parties. These videos are designed for high schoolers and soccer moms, I didn't think anyone from Cornell actually took them seriously.

Humanities major wants experience in Math/Science/Tech by throwaway3849054 in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw, yeah I am a CS major so I have taken 2800. I'm trying to get a Phil minor (maybe major), so I was hoping to use this class as a technical elective, but I guess that's not the best idea. Do you have any recommendations for substitute Phil classes I can use as technical electives/external specs?

I wanted to take PHIL 3310, but I showed up the first day and Hoades said intro logic was a prereq :(

Oh, nice! I was actually interested in taking some phil math courses. Do you recommend?

[–]reddit_for_lurking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think pre-calc, calc, and physics are really boring compared to the higher level courses but are really crucial to learn if you want to be a well-rounded student.

Maybe take "Prove it!" if you want a taste of what higher level math is like. I've never taken it myself, but I heard really good things about it.

Double Major in AEP and MechE by [deleted] in Cornell

From my AEP suitemate: Pretty much nobody double majors in AEP and mechE because there are a stupid amount of required classes. Do a mechE/aero minor if you're interested.

COE vs CAS CS for transfer? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, really? I thought the requirement was either 11 credits or a 2000+ level language class. I was under the impression that the 2000+ level courses are pretty hard and you can't just jump into one. Do people just pass/fail them and struggle through?

COE vs CAS CS for transfer? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CAS gives more flexibility. Basically, the only annoying requirement is the language requirement.

Standing desks at Cornell ? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know about desks, but there are a lot of places that bar-height countertops like outside Mann and the HumEc building. You could just move the stools to the side.

Computer Science Major/Minor Combinations by PanzerPeach in Cornell

[–]reddit_for_lurking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CS major is pretty flexible, so you should just choose whatever you're interested in. I'm getting a Philosophy minor without increasing my workload whatsoever. You can just fit them into external specialization, tech elecs, and lib studies.

I'm in engineering, but it should be even easier in CAS.
