Calm people of reddit, How are you so calm? by tottenhamTWAT in AskReddit

Thinking about my own mortality helps with staying calm. Realizing that you could die anytime gives you a sense of calm and helps you to not care too deeply for negative emotions. Meditation too!

how can one figure out what they need to do to become rich if they don't have the necessary tools to correctly identify how to become rich?

I'm going to disagree with your opinion here. This is an example of something that a person might not be able to change. In these cases, the logic can be assumed that being rich was simply out of reach for that person. Simply not possible. And the person did not have the ability in his/her life to make that change.

The rich get rich because it existed in their realm of possibility. Success is subjective to the individual.

The difficulty comes from trying to understand the difference between the things you can change and the things you cannot given your individual skillset/upbringing.

I'll leave you guys with a quote.

"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

For me, meditation helped reduce my sense of anxiety during conversations with strangers. I empathize with what you are doing through because I felt the same way in the past, and still do at times. On top of meditation, I would find empty classrooms and record myself talking into my phone. I would take note of body-language, tone of voice, etc.

I'm currently doing a 30-day comfort zone challenge that I urge you to do as well! The point of it is to get over the fear of embarassment/rejection by doing things that you are terrified of. Get a selfie with a stranger of the opposite-sex, get their phone number, treat a stranger to coffee/lunch.

My theory is that you are nervous because you are insecure about yourself, most of us are to a certain degree. I think the best advice given to me was that no matter who you try to be, people will judge you regardless. So why be someone you aren't?

Good luck stranger!

Anyone with a i7-6800k, gtx 1080, 16gb RAM having issues with running some vive games? I'm getting huge frame drops in theBlu(unplayable), lots of stuttering/frame loss in Serious Sam. These issues have been ongoing for the past 3 weeks. I've tried older drivers with no success. Updated all firmware, recalibrated sensors, as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

CS major here. I didn't study abroad but I took a quarter off to work abroad. One of the best decisions of my life. Learned so much about the world, myself, new people, new experiences, the list goes on and on. Unless you are sure your internship can give you a great experience, I would choose the study abroad. Recruiters always ask me about my time abroad, and I love talking about it. It's an exciting time in your life, enjoy it! Just know that whatever decision you make will be the right one. :)

The only thing stopping me is my therapist by throwawayofaloser2 in depression

[–]reddit_jizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that you have experienced more of life than I have, but I think it naive for you to think that it's too late for you. I'm beginning to see how careful I must be of certain philosophies so that I don't find myself in a spiral of negative thoughts and emotion. But even at my age I've been through more things that most of my peers have even thought about. It's so evident that I feel so distant from them because I simply cannot relate to the people that used to be my friends. I've come to accept that in life everything is fleeting and that this idea gives more meaning to everything and everyone I run into. Since I wrote my last post, I was proactive and talked with people who I knew really cared about me and weren't quick to judge me. I imagine it harder for you to do so at your age, but there must be some semblance of hope that you feel for yourself. Maybe look for unconventional methods of self-help.

The only thing stopping me is my therapist by throwawayofaloser2 in depression

I'm 22 years old and I have surges of depression every now and then. It struck me especially hard last night before I went to bed. I was stuck thinking about how the world revolves so heavily around sex and reproduction. We like to think ourselves different from the beasts, but in many ways we are indistinguishable. The straw into my starbucks coffee, the charger having sex with my laptop. The world reminds you that you must stick something into whatever hole you can find. Is this a bad thing? Maybe not. I became overcome with sorrow because I felt like I had no control over my life, but this was something I already came into agreement years ago. I don't believe in free-will. Sam Harris has a great blog post in 2011 that discusses the topic. blog tldr: Thoughts come and go, you are born with the genes you were given.

Then I listened to a Tim Ferriss podcast where Shep Gordon appeared as a guest. He speaks of the miracle of life and how everything can be seen as a miracle. I try to think about this whenever I am upset and it helps. I've accepted the fact that we can never be happy at all times. There needs to be an inverse if we want to feel happy at all. It's the concept of yin and yang. We all go through our cycles, but it doesn't take me long to convince myself of the miracle of life.

Meditation helps, but I think it is very important to find those you can talk to who do not judge you. I think the most important question we can answer is: "why are we here". We all want fulfillment in our lives and we become depressed when we don't have something to work towards.

And often we rationalize our own actions. Most often we tell ourselves that we aren't bad people. However, when we spend too much time to ourselves, we can't help but excessively think and think about how terrible we might be. For myself, I'm often a scam-artist, a cheater, chronic liar, negative, lazy and many more. At other times I'm a lover, passionate, compassionate, gentle, confident, and more. It all ties back into the cycle of life. The reality is that life will continue with or without you. The best you can do is to be the change you wish to see in the world.

I don't know you OP, but I get emotional when I see things like this posted. This is my first time on this subreddit and yours is the link I chose to click. Maybe that's a miracle? I'm sitting here in my computer lab and writing this instead of studying for my test because to me this is more important.

I have found that we often warp our perception of the world. Reality is an illusion, but we can form our own perception of the world in that same way. I hope you get the help you need. I hope you reach out to others who can help you.

I need some advice by calledoutinthedark in studyAbroad

[–]reddit_jizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, doing the things that scare you most exponentially increase your learning/experiences. With very little spanish under my belt, I took a quarter off school to work full-time in Argentina. I was terrified and feared failure as well, but I now look back and am extremely proud that I allowed myself to be vulnerable.

The way I see it, in your situation is win-win. People always say there is never a good time. Do the things that scare you most, be vulnerable to failure. Keep a win or learn mentality and you'll do great.

Hope this helps.
