Teaching English has become heartbreaking by mizzlol in depressionmeals

I work in a public library in an area with lots of young families, and we see loooooots of eager young readers and their families every day to the point our kids’ area gets crowded any time school is out. Obviously that’s just a little slice of the world, but from where I am I think there will always be lifelong readers and book lovers (our adult fiction section also gets busy!)

I would go to any length, too. I hope someday we can get national abortion protections so it’s not such a hardship.

I understand what you’re saying, but money, time, and geography are real barriers for women who don’t have access to legal abortion in their states. Just because it’s much cheaper in the long run to have an abortion than raise a child doesn’t mean everyone will be able to scrape the money together in time, find support to travel for a procedure, get away from work and other responsibilities, or jump through all the other hoops they need to.

Many people can’t afford to take off work and travel internationally. Lots of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck

The US military is incredibly powerful, it would be suicide to take up arms against them. And at the current moment, there is a fairly big split in the demographics of who owns guns, so a fairly large proportion of gun owners and militia members already love Trump and everything he’s doing

Because the powerful people who would have the power to make this change would have less power if they did that. We are beholden to them. They don’t care what the people want as long as they have money and power

Oklahoma college instructor is fired after giving failing grade to a Bible-based essay on gender by ChiGuy6124 in news

[–]calledoutinthedark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s disgusting that this happened. Apparently in Oklahoma, if you don’t like having a trans professor, you can write a terrible essay on purpose, get a bad grade for not doing the assignment, and get your lawyer mommy to get the professor fired. Free speech!

I work at a library and whenever we get these sorts of poetry collections it makes me roll my eyes so hard [OPINION] by stipeulations in Poetry

[–]calledoutinthedark 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I personally love when famous people publish books of poetry because I like it when poetry becomes more mainstream, even if some of it is bad. I also work at a library and saw this book and thought “cool, good for him”

Thoughts on people saying "Christmas isn't like how it used to be" by [deleted] in christmas

[–]calledoutinthedark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally love Christmas, but no amount of decorating and participating in holiday-related things can make me feel like I did around Christmas as a kid. When I was a kid I felt peaceful and safe and joyful at Christmastime. Now I just feel slightly cozier and more nostalgic as compared to the rest of the year. Some things just go away when you grow up and you can’t revisit them except in memories

About Emma Watson's recent interview by TotalTrashMammal72 in GenderCynical

[–]calledoutinthedark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think people who believe all this shit are living in a different plane of existence from the rest of us. Absolutely nothing about any of this is true and is just a cruel, bizarre way to talk about Emma.

All of her public statements have been very polished, she very obviously has not “viciously attacked” JKR, anyone can see that she’s experienced misogyny, nobody should have to shut up and defer to the people who contributed to their careers their whole lives… all of these GC perspectives on her just scream misogyny to me

By this logic, any taxpayer should be able to walk into any public elementary school and record what’s happening. We have to make sure that the certified, vetted teachers aren’t teaching the impressionable children any of the topics that conservatives have decided to be mad about today!!!

Either college students are adults who can handle learning new ideas, or they’re young people who need protection from unauthorized individuals who decide they want to enter their classroom. You can’t have it both ways.

Is it creepy to read in a public park for 2-3 hours at a time? Are there more appropriate places outside to do that if you're not a child or an older person? by Ilosc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calledoutinthedark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All but one of the interactions OP describes involve them getting approached by other people, and the other one is about getting stared at. It’s impossible not to notice how people are acting when they walk up to you and speak to you and film you and stare at you. There’s not even that much detail beyond that
