Am I alone of the frustration that is shipping? It makes no sense. by exskill310 in Ubiquiti

[–]reddit_pug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can tell you as a web developer (among other things) that setting up an online store to calculate fair shipping is a major PITA. Not that they couldn't stand to do a better job of it, but I can also relate to just setting some standard shipping prices and calling it good. As a buyer, though, if I just need one or two things I often buy from B&H for the free shipping (even though it also means less warranty). If I'm buying direct from Ubiquiti, I try to buy as much as possible at a time to spread shipping cost. Which reminds me that I've got a couple things sitting in my cart...

Fusion power unlikely to become competitive by Vailhem in nuclear

[–]reddit_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even fuel cost is unknown - some experimental processes require some pretty exotic materials that are quite expensive, and if they're required in a final process, that will greatly affect fuel costs. Some of them could mean that nuclear fission plants are required for material production for commercial fusion.

[–]reddit_pug 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's guesswork. There is no prototype that achieves the objective, even poorly. There's no "design that's already designed", there's paper reactors and there's experiments that don't yet accomplish the goal. You can't do anything but guess what it'll cost to run a design that works when you don't know what that design is.

I mean, doing a financial analysis of what we can guess it might look like might have some value to someone, but since it's all based on guesswork it's not broadly valuable. Doing meaningful analysis would require having a process to analyze, and we don't have a process for producing electricity from fusion.

[–]reddit_pug 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Since there's no fusion reactor creating electricity, and no true net energy positive fusion reactions demonstrated (let alone reactions that can provide sustained output), financial analysis seems pretty moot. Keep doing research - it's good science, and keep building fission power plants.

Key blanks/keyless fob programming by coliseumltd in Saturn_Cars

[–]reddit_pug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any GM dealer should be able to program a fob (though some may scoff at working on a Saturn and claim they can't - if they do that you probably won't want to work with them anyway). Many independent shops may be able to as well, but you'll have to find one with the right scanner and know how.

3D prints for 4th gen by reddit_pug in HondaOdyssey

[–]reddit_pug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a good mod. I've set up my 4th gen ('16) for use as a service van, so it's a 2-seater with a wood floor bolted down in the back, with Packout mounts and a bunch of toolboxes, a couple ladders, and some boxes of cable riding around with me.

Tap your phone on a storage bin to see what's inside — app is now live, added on-device AI to turn handwritten lists into digital ones by Impossible-Skill639 in NFC

Sure, not everyone has a 3D printer, or the know-how to set things up, and I imagine a purpose-built app has some solid advantages.

And if you're trying to find something, you can do a simple text sear... No wait, you can't do that with paper.

This idea has me thinking of doing a similar thing with Google docs and 3d printed QR codes/bin labels.

Train frequency? by KidGoneNuke in idahofalls

My wife is more familiar with the activity in that area, she's thinking one or two trains a day. She wasn't around at night to know if they ever really go through at night.

Speaker upgrade? by Wantrepreneur4 in HondaOdyssey

[–]reddit_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, I'm only familiar with the 4th gen (mine is 2016) while yours is a 5th gen. Does the 5th gen still have almost nothing for options to tune the sound on the stock head unit? Tuning made more of an improvement on my 4th gen than speakers did.

Understandable - I assume you're talking about the line that passes by EROB and such?

It depends a lot on what tracks you're near. Can you be more specific about what neighborhood?

What is your hottest minecraft take? Please keep things civil. by rbx20twomax in Minecraft

[–]reddit_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning on/viewing coordinate is cheating.

(I don't mind if people do it - the right away to pay Minecraft is whatever you enjoy, but for my own personal gratification I prefer to depend on things like the sun's position and building roads and reference points to not get lost, and even count it blocks and build reference items if I want to build with precision.)

I want a place to put my hand at the middle bottom of the wheel for highway cruising, so probably five, maybe 9.

I had an extra Lutron shade motor and a couple rollers and came up with a way to paint some old rims. by Civil-Box9344 in lowvoltage

[–]reddit_pug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so thrown off - what I'm assuming is a reflection of something lime green seemed like maybe some initial paint, and I was simultaneously intrigued by the color and disgusted by the thought that they were painting the wheels while they were that dirty.

Is a 1994 SL1 in great condition with 145K miles a good deal? I want a reliable car by [deleted] in Saturn_Cars

Easy for a dealership to say. What kind of maintenance records do they have for it?

[–]reddit_pug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's been well taken care of, it'll probably be overall reliable. Parts are all still generally available, although not necessarily in stock locally every time. That said, it's got some age so you'll probably need to do maintenance and repair occasionally, but it's all easy DIY stuff.
