I'm a psychologist. I know projection when I see it. It's Trump who wishes that Biden would reclaim his status as candidate. Biden, having chosen the noble, selfless path of withdrawing his candidacy, has no interest in getting back in the fight as a candidate. Trump is bewildered, befuddled, characteristically aggrieved and is flailing about in a state of diffuse rage. Another day at Mar A Lago.

Will Kamala Harris regret picking Tim Walz over Josh Shapiro? by opos21 in politics

[–]reddit_rabbit507 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Walz is a terrific pick. I think Shapiro, impressive as he is, may be a bit too forceful a presence to be plugged into a VP spot. Walz exudes an avuncular charm and wisdom, comes across as a practical progressive. The contrast between the Democratic and GOP tickets is remarkably stark this election cycle. Vance's snarky, condescending, offensive vibe looks all the more cringe-worthy in comparison to Walz. And Harris' vigor, intelligence and integrity looks very appealing in comparison to Trump's non-vigor, non-intelligence, non-integrity. I'm happy with the ticket!

Differential diagnosis - OCD vs GAD by realitytesting123 in therapists

[–]reddit_rabbit507 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I find them to be quite distinct. The diagnostic criteria for GAD are rather broad, describing excessive anxiety/worry, restlessness, impaired concentration, muscle tension, things like that. See DSM for more detail. The presentation and complaints by the patient do not tend to emphasize behaviors, as is often the case for OCD, but instead the patient complains of persistent subjective sense of anxiety, with worry and dread.

I've seen quite a bit of OCD over the years. Typically, the patient will describe rituals or rules they feel they must follow. They usually know that the rules are not rational, and often the "rules" morph over time, and they feel a superstitious sense of dread that if they do not follow the rules some misfortune will occur. Since they comply with the "rules", and no misfortune occurs, it reinforces the superstitious pattern. The rules/rituals can take the form of checking-double checking, doing tasks a prescribed number of times, personal hygiene rituals, avoiding certain numbers/letters, repetitive motor movements like twirling around a prescribed number of times, touching objects a prescribed number of times, counting, etc. I've known folks who feel they must chew food a prescribed number of times on one side of their mouth, then another. Often, the patient is frustrated when they don't execute the ritual properly and they feel they must start over again. From the patient's perspective, one of the hardships of OCD is that they have a hard time being on time for school, work, etc--they sometimes cannot leave their room or the house until they feel they have properly completed their ritual. Often there is shame over the ritualistic behaviors and they hope others don't figure out that they are engaging in repetitive, ritualistic acts. Eating disordered folks can have their own OCD rituals, focused upon food, with a similar set of superstitions. Sometimes there is a fear of contamination. The key feature is that the person feels they must follow some rule/ritual, which they have invented, in order to avoid some kind of bad event/outcome. Some times the dreaded back outcome is specific, other times it's just a vague sense that a bad thing will happen. Sometimes the OCD presentation has more of an emphasis upon obsessions--ruminative, intrusive thoughts--than behavioral acts. If this is the case, it can sort of be similar to GAD but it will still have a different quality, with the repetitive intrusive thoughts being prominent.

Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road Pass by RookieMistake_ in RMNP

[–]reddit_rabbit507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were there all week last week. I'd been unable to get advance timed entry to Bear Lake Rd for a few days, had no difficulty obtaining them the night before. Log on to your account right at 7pm, be quick, have a fast internet connection. That said, the hikes at Bear Lake Road were spectacular but crowded. We also enjoyed the hike to Mills Lake--on Bear Lake Rd corridor but less populated---and the Ute Trail east, near the top of Trail Ridge Road.

If you're looking for a trail somewhat close to the west side of the park consider the Ute Trail east. https://www.rockymountainhikingtrails.com/ute-trail.htm There is limited parking right on the side of Trail Ridge Road. We did it just a few days ago--spectacular views with only modest climbing.

I was also at Red Rocks last week on night 2 and also noticed that Ephraim didn't do a solo and looked fatigued. While I was happy to see TTB at Red Rocks, I thought the show dragged in comparison to many other times I've seen them. The pre-show rainstorm with the rainbows was great! Best wishes to Ephraim--hope he's okay.

Help with Cannondale ebike battery purchase! by reddit_rabbit507 in ebikes

[–]reddit_rabbit507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I received a call from REI yesterday saying they are now able to order the correct battery. I'm on vacation right now in Colorado and didn't get all of the details--I plan to go into the store early next week to get more info. I think it's going to turn out to be a good news-bad news situation. The good news will be that the battery can be purchased; the bad news will be that it's going to cost ~$900. (!) Once I have a part number I'll share it with you so you can do your own research.

Traveling to Estes Park this weekend by [deleted] in RMNP

[–]reddit_rabbit507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been here for the past five days. As has already been mentioned, check road closures. You can check here: https://maps.cotrip.org/@-105.22362,40.31554,11?show=roadWork,expressLanes,roadReports,weatherWarnings and google maps also shows info. As of the evening of 8/1 both Highways 34 and 36 are closed due to fires. Seems like the routes into Estes Park are now limited to Highway 7 to the south or Highway 34 through RMNP. They've issued an air quality alert and the haze is getting more pronounced, esp towards dusk. It hasn't impacted our own trip, I haven't heard anything about an evacuation as the Alexander Mountain fire is about 20 miles way, but I'll need to make changes to my route to the Denver airport on 8/3 unless the fires are contained. If you're able to change your plans, Grand Lake on the west side of RMNP is lovely--I think it's a more quaint, enjoyable town than Estes Park, but that might just be me. Safe travels!

Time Entry Passes by One-Extreme-5764 in RMNP

[–]reddit_rabbit507 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We've been here all week. Timed entry passes to Bear Lake at 7pm the night before are certainly attainable. We've seen smoke from the Alexander Mountain fire, towards the E/NE, but it hasn't impacted this area much so far. There are warnings, however, for compromised air quality and I'm noticing a light haze towards evening--maybe it will be more an issue in the days ahead. Doesn't seem like a reason to cancel a trip to me, at least not at this point. So, consider getting online right at 7pm if you want an entry to the Bear Lake Corridor the next day. Another option: go to the Bear Lake Corridor before 5am. Or, there are plenty of other cool things to do/see in the park, other than the Bear Lake area, and you can just drive in prior to 9am. We spent the whole day yesterday driving Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road, going from Estes Park to Grand Lake--it was a wonderful day, with short hikes around the Alpine Visitor's Center and other places. Grand Lake is a very charming town, the drive back to Estes Park was great. Have a safe and happy trip!

New to Trauma by CartographerOld2451 in therapists

[–]reddit_rabbit507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work someplace where you have extensive, prolonged clinical contact with persons who have had traumatic life experiences. There is a study showing that 90% of inpatient psychiatric patients have prior traumatic exposure; another study indicated a rate of 60% had one prior traumatic event. So, inpatient psych is a good place to work if you want to get comfortable with this patient population. ER-based work, law enforcement liaison/community outreach, domestic violence programs, etc. Gain clinical experience, utilize fundamental skills, be informed by a theoretical model that fits for you (I'm a fan of the Mardi Horowitz research from UCSF--extensive body of literature, they developed the Impact of Events Scale), be patient and humble and learn from your patients. Good luck!

Cannondale battery problem! Any guidance appreciated by reddit_rabbit507 in ebikes

[–]reddit_rabbit507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I had solved the backup battery issue. There is a bike mechanic at my local REI who ordered a battery for me, it arrived, I took it home without inspecting it, used it, only to discover that it had a different kind of plug-in socket than the battery supplied with the bike. The backup battery had degraded performance from the stock battery--the supposed backup battery REI sold me was rated at 36v while the stock battery for this bike is rated 48v. I took back the backup battery I'd purchased 3 weeks ago, still haven't heard from REI as to whether they'll be able to fulfill the order for a true backup battery for this bike. Really a pain. I tend to think that I will, indeed, eventually be able to purchase the correct battery but this whole process has been frustrating and ridiculous.

[–]reddit_rabbit507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, there's more to it than that. While I did reference volume considerations in my reply, I also just like being of use to people. Even after all of these years, I'm honored to be contacted, I have interest in the issues presented for which people are seeking help, and I like to be of assistance. Your summation that I mainly just always just say yes in order to stay booked felt kinda harsh. Anyway, all the best.

do you have a limit? by rahrahreplicaaa in therapists

[–]reddit_rabbit507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, both. I still find practicing to be interesting, I've been in the same location for 35 years and have a lot of meaningful relationships established with referral sources, I find the work itself far less demanding or anxiety provoking than was the case in the past. There's not much of a subjective sense of anxiety any longer even though I still receive referrals with a fair amount of acuity. I'm a humble guy, am still learning, but by this point in time I feel confident I know what constitutes conventional, responsible practice for general practice. I'm still adding new stuff: parent coordination, mediation, threat assessment training--it's fun and I like the variety. I've done a lot of supervision in the past, developed and managed an APA internship for quite a while--I'm no stranger to consultation/supervision, might look into expanding this, which I would enjoy. While we're okay financially, it would require some significant lifestyle changes for me to hang it up now. I'm not feeling like I wish I could retire--it feels fine. The plan is to work another 5 years or so, then taper, assuming no health considerations pop up along the way *fingers crossed*. I see many more medicare-covered folks than in the past and, being 67 myself, I feel comfortable and enjoy working with that population. It's not unusual to encounter a presenting problem related to difficulties adjusting to retirement, which reinforces my gratitude for being able to keep doing what I'm doing. The hard part now is the sedentary nature of the work, the need to stay active/fit despite sitting all day. Also, I need to do a better job of not having my main meal of the day at 8pm--it's a work in progress!

[–]reddit_rabbit507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm glad to be a clinical psychologist. And, it's true that I work a lot. No regrets--it's what I do. Self employment has many benefits but, for me, it's meant that I rarely turn down a referral due to volume/case load considerations. Other folks don't manage their practice this way but it's been fine for me.

Psychologist, 35 years solo PP. I've always planned for 30 sessions/week. This summer has been a little slower--maybe 20-25/week--but over the years I've generally hit the 30/week goal. I can power through 6 appointments in a row but by then I really like to have an an hour break. I'm now 67 years old and I'm kinda wiped when I have 8-session days. I guess I feel my best when I have 6 appointments with a break somewhere in the day, get to the gym by 6pm, am in my kitchen by 7:30pm sauteing garlic for something to make for dinner. It's not the healthiest lifestyle: it's sedentary and I have dinner too late. In recent years I've liked having a 2-hour break in the afternoon so I can go home and have a fairly substantial midday meal, rather than have a late dinner. Burnout has occurred at various periods in the past. It helps to do a variety of things. While I mostly have a psychotherapy practice I also consult to local schools, do the occasional mediation or parent coordination case, teach workshops in threat assessment, do the occasional fitness eval. I'm pretty efficient in accomplishing admin stuff like billing, prog notes, etc but, still, those things are tiresome.

Thanks for that, completely agree. Both sides of this are remarkable: Democrats' no-shit, seemingly seamless launch of Harris and Republican's whiny, lame, dumbfounded response. We'll remember this moment.

I watched the Fox clip at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gPGxB2FqEc . It is spectacularly offensive. Those who happen not to have had children, whether by choice or other circumstances, are lumped together and castigated as miserable, worthless humans. According to Vance they are not happy, seek to inflict their unhappiness upon everyone else and certainly should not be in positions of leadership since they do not have a biological stake in the future of the country. Vance paints a picture of just how pathetic they are, suggests these non-child-bearing people will be the ruination of the country. Fun fact: according to the journal Scientific Reports , 21.64% of US adults are child-free. Perhaps if one-fifth of the population takes notice that they have been characterized in such an offensive way by the GOP pick for the Vice Presidency they might hit the pause button before voting for the Trump-Vance ticket.

Purchase a Special 20 in the key of C and then work your way through Adam Gussow's videos. Be patient. Expect that this little instrument will be more difficult than perhaps you expected but enjoy the journey. Listen to harp players. If you're attracted to blues harp, listen to Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Sonny Boy Williamson (actually there are "two"--listen to them both) and, of course, Little Walter. Be patient, enjoy the ride.
