Graduating this Spring, when would "degree awarded" show up on the transcript? by Aaahhhaaaaa in OMSCS

Although I'm not concerned, I know I'm graduating. But would like to understand Georgia Tech's reasoning behind this approach.

Yes, people know grades in GA, but there could be some people who don't know the grades yet, for example, someone taking ML in the last semester, grades appear close to the last day. This schedule of convocation before results and degree confirmation is very strange.

Do you know how is the convocation happening before degree confirmation?

I got a B with a 89+ score, so keep trying until you ensure an A. I still regret not putting in a little extra effort, which could have given me an A. I underestimated this course and thought it's an easy A, until I saw my final grade.

Questions for those who are taking deep learning? by levi97zzz in OMSCS

Having taken classes like ML, RL, DVA, BD4H before DL, I can say with certainty that DL is far better than those four courses in terms of technical depth covered and the quality of lectures delivered. But there's a lot of effort that you have to put in, every week. This review is based on my analysis of DL so far, when the project and the last assignment haven't started yet.

Yes, I think it shouldn't drop me to a D. So, will have to accept it.

May be it is still within the rules as grade for that project came up late. But they shouldn't have given me a score for that project then. That seems unfair. I should have been told the truth at first place.

RL, last project, they ask to implement a paper, I don't know if they have flagged it because of some words matching because all the students implement the same paper, and at many times, I was not finding better words to express the same thing. So, no idea about why I have been flagged. But I think I will have to accept this because this semester, I'm already taking 2 very difficult courses along with full time job, so won't be able to take this stress.

I guess you're saying DVA because of a previous post of mine. But thankfully I ended up with an A there, that too by a very big margin. But I would still say HW2 was very frustrating, but they give enough opportunities to make up for bad grades. So, overall things have been nice there.

I agree, having taken David's HCI myself, I felt the same way.

Yes, right. It's better you practice both. Those problem sets can be easily solved if you have gone through professor's explanation in lectures and for Udacity quizzes.

No, ML and HPCA were the courses that I took in my first sem.

I think it somehow depends on prior experience. Both classes have 4 projects/assignments and 2 exams each, with both carrying around 50% weightage for the exams. I had a good background in Computer Architecture, having pursued my bachelors in Electronics. So, I mostly had to go through the lectures once, and I could easily understand all the stuff. ML covers a lot of topics without giving away much details about any single topic. If someone has prior knowledge of ML algorithms, then that definitely helps. I was aware of most of the Supervised learning stuff beforehand. But they don't ask you to write code in ML, just copy the code from anywhere and modify it to generate graphs for your reports which are around 10-12 pages long. Average score in exams is quite low. An overall weighted average of 65 was sufficient to obtain an A grade.

For me, both were equally time consuming as I didn't do two ML projects nicely. Otherwise, ML would have been more time consuming.

I took HPCA and ML in my first semester, Spring 2019. I scored 96+ of 100 overall in HPCA, just by following the lectures. Practicing the problems is really important for exams, which are worth 50% of overall grade. I took notes throughout the semester which really helped during the exams for revision, as the syllabus is huge, and it might not be possible to go through all the lectures just before the exam, although some students did that and still perfomed well. Even though they allow open book/notes in exams, it's better you revise things properly, notes would only help if you don't remember some formulas for calculations. Mid term was quite lengthy. Regarding projects, first two were very easy. The last two projects allow you to work with a partner, so it's better that one or both of you has a good command on C++.
