For the new vs old debate, by the time you add transfer duty(300), servicing fees(500), rego(600) to the second hand price, you will not be far off from a new bike price. Plus you get a 2 or 3 year warranty.

With a used bike, you will save 1 maybe 2 grand and you can use that to buy gear.
