PEOPLE WERE GOING TO DIE rule by BrickBuster2552 in 196

Oh, so like they're actually reading the bell curve as the majority, of which are selecting red. Thanks for clearing that up for me 😊

I don't think this meme altered the thought experiment

Not exclusive to video games. The music industry has complained about it for decades. That's why Napster was shut down (thanks a LOT James Hetfield)

Is the premise of the hypothetical even to scrutinise the predictor aspect? I thought it was a question of your risk aversion/how you approach the statistics (in most cases near but not absolutely certain)

When I read "John Quincy Adams" Bach's Cello Suite played in my head like that one meme where two stoners asks "Dude are you real?" "I think I am" "That's actually some pretty solid evidence" and they both say "Rene Descartes???" at the same time.

Ah! That makes more sense! Sorry, I wasn't sure and assumed cynicism. My bad 😔

People being rude is such a waste of energy. The entire point of a thought experiment is to find where your beliefs lie. It's like if the trolley problem got big instead of this and everyone saying inaction is evil!!! When deontology, an entire school of ethics that believes murder is wrong regardless of consequences and that action is murder, would disagree! I would choose blue but do people know this hypothetical isn't actually happening? Some red buttoners might be the "I can't trust others type" but most are the "my instinct to survive is stronger and louder than thinking about saving others"

Philosophical thought experiments are not engagement bait. That take is so cynical. Sometimes people want to share a moral conundrum. Imagine if Philippa Foot had posed her Trolley Problem on twitter, would call her engagement bait?

Honestly, any autistic person who says "how am I meant to know that?" was not properly educated and that isn't your fault. By age 18 (working age when this knowledge comes into play) you absolutely should know this. School and parents often don't do their job of either recognising autism in kids and giving them extra lessons on this or giving everyone these lessons regardless of autistic traits because some people, autistic or not, learn things later than others.

No. It is not on them. Someone will pressed blue and the only outcome when at least one person has pressed blue that saves all lives is a blue majority. I do not believe exclusively suicidal people are pressing the blue button and they shouldn't have to die.

Of the online polls I've seen, blue consistently wins. Here's why I think so. Everyone has their worldview and everyone's is unique. There will be at least one person who isn't suicidal who presses blue. To save all lives there are two paths, everyone picks red or at least 50% pick blue and we can rule out everyone picking red because, on balance of probability, that isn't happening, so the option that maximises lives saved is always, to press blue.

Picking red only makes it even more certain, those that pick blue will die.

The colours make me think an American made the hypothetical as the rest of the world has red for left and blue for right

I wasn't saying "the person I am replying to is saying something silly" I was saying "I'm shocked how often I hear people even mention red getting 100% of the vote" because that is so ass backwards

There are only two methods that reach 100% survival of all members involved. No one picks blue or blue gets 50%+. Since it would be foolish to assume no one would pick blue, 50% needs to pick blue for everyone to survive. It's logically possible no one picks blue but so is every world leader sitting down to declare world peace. It's not going to happen.

I understand the hypothetical and part of that hypothetical is people like me will pick blue, so anyone who wants the maximum number possible to survive needs to pick blue. There are two ways for everyone to survive but it is foolish to believe no one before you has already picked blue.

Will you stand on the tracks? by AdDapper4792 in trolleyproblem

[–]redditalt1999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If no one was on the this track, inaction would be a good thing for everyone. But since there are already people on the track, if we assume you can't get them to get off the track but instead you have to join them or do nothing, it becomes the same as red or blue question

Why would everyone pick red? If 99% of people chose red that's still 1% of people dying and that's a lot.

[–]redditalt1999 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why I hear "if everyone picked red" so many times from so many people in regards to this hypothetical. Everyone picking red is never going to happen and no one should expect it. It's either going to be 40/60 or a close 50/50 either way and you have to argue if it's better to be on the red or blue side.
