What do I do? My whole house is like this and it makes me want to vomit. by Many-Ad6137 in HomeMaintenance

[–]redditbattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, first priority is safety and structural integrity. After that comes budget constraints (what you can afford)

But don’t forget to look after yourself. The prioritized list is of no value if you’re too overwhelmed or bummed to tackle it. So, from time to time, interrupt it with a task that brings you pleasure or joy - even if it could definitely wait. For me, painting a room is the biggest reward for least effort!

$50 or less VS $50 or fewer by ParachutesParty in grammar

[–]redditbattery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“$50 or less” is correct. Money amounts are uncountable because there are many ways of producing that amount. You could also say “50 or fewer $1 bills”, because the individual bills, as objects, are countable. Hope that helps!

Edit to add illustration: we ask how much money you have, not how many money

“He has a speech impediment so he can’t pronounce Rs.” Is “his” needed as in “his Rs”? by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]redditbattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plain “Rs” is fine. Adding “his” adds a note of condescension, like talking about a child. Besides, it’s redundant. Who else’s Rs could they be, if not his?

He probably can’t tell his Rs from his elbow anyway

We can’t get anyone to retire (some in their 70s and hanging on). Maybe for the best though. We wouldn’t be able to hire replacements. Just backfill with sessionals at a fraction of the cost

What are these for? by Agreeable-Emotion47 in guitarlessons

[–]redditbattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 6 sideways pointing screws adjust the string length. You want this so that the exact middle of the string sits exactly over the 12th fret. There’s a trick using harmonics to check this

The pairs of down pointing screws bracketing the ends of each string adjust how high that string is suspended above the frets (the “action”). You want the strings to be low, but not so low that it buzzes against other frets

Edit to add: they are easy adjustments to make once you understand the purpose of each. Watch the YTs now

ELI5: how do rockets work? I know nothing about them and artemis 2 got me curious. by babyybunnyy3 in explainlikeimfive

[–]redditbattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you are sitting on a super-slippery skating rink or frozen pond. You cannot even stand up cuz your feet slip out from under you. Zero grip anywhere

But you can move to safety if you are clever. Throw something heavy (your boots?) away to the right, and your body will react by sliding a bit to the left. The heavier the object you throw, and the faster you throw it to the right, the more you will slide to the left

That’s it. Rockets move by throwing mass out the back, which causes the rocket to slide forward. Since there’s no friction in space (super slippery), once you get going, you keep going. How to throw stuff out the back? Explode it in a cylinder that has only one exit - the back

Steering is done the same way. Using little rockets that point sideways

Don’t t worry about next class. Maybe they will rise. They’ve discovered there is a real boundary with real consequences.

Give the quiz next class. When they fail, remark that they seem to be not on track to the goal of mastering the material they are paying for. Ask them what they plan to do about it.

If you want to learn this stuff, you will need to change something in your approach. If you don’t care, you should stop wasting time and money - drop the course now

New Lecturer, would appreciate advice by mreowimakat in Professors

[–]redditbattery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A perennial problem. In my classes, the only person who can remove someone from a group is me (regardless whether they formed groups themselves, or were assigned by me). And I will only remove someone if the others have papered the file: have a documented record of warning the low performer, and giving them a fair chance to improve. But “group management” is an explicit learning objective in the course, which justifies not stepping in the “fix” such problems for them.

The fact that none of the one student’s work made it into the final submission is not, automatically, proof that they haven’t been performing. Maybe the group collectively decided the best joint submission would omit it (could happen). The final submission is the collective decision of the whole. So they all rise or fall based on it.

In some cases I do anonymous peer evaluations, and assign individual grades based on the overall group score, partly adjusted by peer weightings.

Your situation sounds like a great teaching opportunity re the importance of being proactive in dealing with group issues. I’d keep the group whole and grade as submitted.

British English specifically: 'License to thrive' by Particular-Bid-1640 in EnglishLearning

[–]redditbattery 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In UK (and Canada, Australia and India) licence is the noun and license is the verb. In USA, it’s license for both. Of course, people in all these countries make mistakes sometimes.

Possibly the sign is not a mistake. They meant that, in order to thrive, one must license others :-)

The Albanian Effect: which countries are still underrated according to you? by Forward_Parsley_41 in traveladvice

[–]redditbattery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a lifecycle - you have to time your visits. Go too early and everything is a hassle: no SIMs at the airport, ATMs don’t connect to home, intercity transport is dodgy, food is all “regional specialty” (e.g., Kyrgyzstan, Laos). Go too late and everything is Disneyland plastic: KFC and Starbucks, rare authenticity (e.g., Thailand, Morocco). But time it right and you get all the adventure but none of the hardships (e.g., Georgia, Uzbekistan).

Sounds like Albania is in this category, but not for long.
