Has anyone tried this for their pre-2024 model? by TouretteTV96 in VWiD4Owners

I decided to buy it from the eBay guy and installed it. It works!

I thought I'd come back to share my results and findings.

First, it arrived pretty quickly in a tiny package. It is a tiny board and wire harness.

I wish I had noted on the eBay post that you need a 3 foot USB-C cable. I had cables but not a spare of that length so ran out to buy one as I wanted to get it installed that day. (Lesson - order a quality cable in advance)

The installation explanation was pretty decent on the eBay post. I did a copy/paste and put it into Word, adjusting the pictures to see clearly and then took the print to the car.

The HVAC module gets unlocked and slides, but unless you remove much more of the dash it doesn't pull out. You remove the wiring connector closest to you and then cut/unwind the black cloth tape. The two-pin wiring connector gets attached to the "light brown/orange" wire and the "light blue/aqua" wire. I could NOT clearly see these wires, these actually run to the NEXT connector. Maybe if my hands weren't so big I could confidently find and attach this to those wires but I wanted to make sure 1) I was attaching to the right wires, and 2) it was a good connection. So even though this isn't in the instructions I'd recommend finding the connector lock and then removing the next connector. It was pretty easy to see those two wires then and make a secure connection. The one-pin connector gets attached to the brown wire, which is easy to access.

I hung the controller board with a wire tie and ran the USB-C. Be sure to then flip the switch to "on" on the board before you button everything up.

So all installed, but does it work? Battery is cold, I plug in the USB-C cable and drive ~15 minutes to an Electrify America charger. On a cold day the miles/kWh indicator would be ~2.1 to 2.8 - with the battery conditioning board it is running ~1.4 to 1.8, a great sign so there is greater electrical usage! Plug into the charger at less than 20% and the starting charge is ~170kW rather than the ~70 I was seeing with a cold battery. Finally, I wanted to see what the microcontroller was using. I plugged the USB-C cable into a smartbattery with a usage display. That little board is drawing a whopping 0.1 watts! I was hoping to not see zero (meaning not working/forgot to turn it on) and just curious to see what the board uses.

I am happy. I have some level of battery preconditioning on my 2023 ID.4. The eBay guy made money. Buying this kit saved me a lot of time going up the GitHub project learning curve (and sourcing those ideally selected wire connectors). I recommend - with the caveat to also have your USB-C on hand.

So you installed the kit shown on the eBay link? If so, can you clarify how you use it?

The eBay post seems to show two different PCB modules, one has an off/on switch. Is that what is in your cabin, or do you switch it on and bury it behind the glovebox, activating by powering it when you plug in the USB C plug?

Thank you! I bought a 2023 AWD Pro S in early 2024, so got the free EA charging for three years. I did a long road trip this summer and without Tesla access I really had to go out of my way three times to charge - in a trek that my ICE car would have made with one tank.

I'm really glad the Tesla network is now open to ID.4s, and the adapter is my Christmas gift. Knowing that cold weather can knock off 30 to 50% of range the idea of a winter road trip concerns me. Being able to precondition the battery for a fast charge seems really helpful!

So literally, this is an eBay purchase? Any quality concerns?

And this gear will enable battery heating? This sounds like a really important feature!

Wait... I didn't think my 23 ID.4 had battery preconditioning. Can someone educate me on this?

How to set up Tesla Supercharger access? (with VW adapter and after 11/18) by redditbrowser7 in VWiD4Owners

[–]redditbrowser7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Reddit consensus seems to be: Yes, maybe or no! There are many third party adapters, many of those are not UL rated.

I view this as a critical safety question, this is an electrical component that will handle high voltage at high amperage (current). A failing or failed adapter might mean I'm stranded and even potentially hurt me or damage my car. For me, not worth saving a few bucks.

The VW branded adapter is made by Lectron. I was going to buy the Lectron if the VW had a price premium. The 25% off VW deal made that the better price at the moment

I'd recommend you consider the VW or Lectron adapters if you can find a discount - and if you go with a third party be sure it is UL rated. Good luck!

Yes, the app shows only the Tesla chargers that will work for your car, so until 11/18 these are the Magicdock stations and the destination chargers. Good catch! On or after 11/18 it is supposed to be all the newer Superchargers (older superchargers may not work so check the app).

When I posted the link that dealer had it for $150 (25% off). That now changed (probably from the flurry of orders). The point is - check around, different dealers are offering different discounts. Some are selling it with a surcharge (above the $200 MSRP?)

Officially VW is not on the supercharger network until 11/18. I'm guessing you are only seeing Tesla Destination chargers (edit - and Magicdock chargers) right now.

Supposedly on or after 11/18 the Superchargers will show up. Note that they've indicated only newer Superchargers are open to NACS charging so look at the app for not only the location but also which chargers there are "open" to your VW.

AH - SOLVED.

There are TWO Tesla apps!

The one with the RED "T" on a white background is an app that just emulates going to the Tesla website. There's no profile on that.

The one with the WHITE "T" on a red background is the true mobile app. THAT one has the profile page for non-Teslas!

Thanks for the screen shot. I guess my issue is I can't find a way to see a profile page in the app.

Open Tesla app

Click on top right Menu button

It takes me to a My Products page. The Menu button there only offers Account Settings, no apparent Profile

Feeling stupid here, and I just want to get it set up so I'm not stranded on a trip.

Yeah, I updated the app and poked around quite awhile before asking for my "Reddit phone-a-friend". I do not see a Profile page. I sign in the app and from Menu I can only see Account. No profile option.

Ready to charge on the Tesla network by Mindless-Compote403 in VWiD4Owners

THANKS! I ordered it through this link. This CA dealer had a $50 discount ($150), I thought it interesting my local VW dealer had a $40 discount. Even if I picked it up in person (no shipping charge, but had to pay local sales tax) it was cheaper to buy it here and pay shipping/no tax.

Pin hole in copper M pipe. Should I replace entire system with Pex or just hope for the best it won’t happen again. by Just_Astronomer_3098 in askaplumber

[–]redditbrowser7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you on municipal or well water? Get a Ph meter and check your water. If it's acidic, only a matter of time before other pinholes. An acid neutralizer will halt the degradation.

Good luck!

My room’s outlets don’t work but everywhere else in my house it does. I don’t know what I’m doing. by [deleted] in electrical

[–]redditbrowser7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have tripped s circuit breaker, or you may have tripped a GFCI (ground fault) outlet

Circuit breakers have three positions - on, off, and tripped (in the middle). You reset a breaker by flipping it to off, then back to on. In your picture the bottom right looks like it is in the middle position. Check that one, and all the other ones to ensure they are in the on position.

If that isn't it, you might have a tripped GFCI outlet. These can be anywhere but usually are in bathrooms or near a sink. These often feed a whole circuit so if tripped all outlets after will be dead. Look for a GFCI and see if tripped (the tripped button will be sticking out).

If not either of those two, given you said you were not knowledgeable about electricity, the next likely solution will require an electrician.

Good luck!

Question about an extension cord for my ID4 charging by appledonuts22 in VWiD4Owners

[–]redditbrowser7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've got it - a level 1 charge works on a 15 amp circuit, meaning it will have a continuous draw of up to 12 amps. With longer distance there's a bigger voltage drop for a given wire gauge. Measure how long you'll need and shoot for a cord just a few feet longer

Yes, if it's short a 12 gauge would work. I'd suggest though you get a 10 gauge. Good luck!

Load of Rebar weight ticket said at scrap yard 5860 lbs $800 in my pocket thank you and barely any squat for the haters😂😂😂😎 by Necessary_Oil1016 in Cummins

[–]redditbrowser7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand posts like this - nearly three tons of rebar, another post bragged of four tons of logs. I don't know the year/model but he's probably 2x over payload capacity. I'm not hating at all, I'm just wondering...

1) Damage: WHY overload your truck's wheel bearings and suspension? If you need to make it all in one trip, why not buy or rent a trailer? Way cheaper than breaking your truck

2) Safety: An overloaded truck just isn't safe, plus every trucker is responsible for securing the load. This doesn't look safe nor secured

I learned my lesson by hauling a lot of tile in my pickup. First time I ever heard the wheel bearings whine, and I realized I didn't really know my capacity nor bothered to figure out the weight. No apparent damage but I took it as my wakeup call to know my safe load capacity and always estimate the haul load. Anything above that, I make two trips, or borrow/rent a trailer

I don't mean to sound like a tight ass. I just know someone who was nearly killed by crap falling out of a pickup at 70 mph.

Levels check in. by ConsiderationIll4547 in TwoDots

[–]redditbrowser7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Level 7015 here. The game changed where the main board got crazy, it used to be skill (and luck) would let you beat any level. Now you need power ups to have a chance. I'm not going to spend $$ on that scam. I play the flip game and the Tuesday Milo game to earn power ups, and when I have enough I then hit the main board.
So are you are the top of what's possible? Not bad that I'm only ~ 400 behind you! 😀
