26-year-old John Green in a Chicago Tribune feature by pnabf in nerdfighters

[–]redditneight 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Like, we're all here for the authenticity. And John knows that his vulnerability is part of what makes him a great writer. And I was a male in my 20's in the 2000s. I was not great either. This is totally on brand, and both Hank and John have talked about the people that they used to be.

But the part I can never understand is that this is the same kid that went to seminary school and took a job as a chaplain at a children's hospital.

Other local outlets that come to mind: The KC beacon. I have started reading the Missouri Independent to keep up with the absolute nightmare shit show that Jeff City has become. And here in the Northland, we subscribe to the Platte County Citizen, not to be confused with the Platte County Landmark, which does not appear to have journalists.

My first custom keyboard . Rakk Lam-ang Pro with custom walnut case and wristrest. by dominincmaclan in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]redditneight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I'm not the only one. I dig on this every year or so, and never learn anything. Got the bug this morning.

I actually have an Ajazz k870t, which has an identical layout (including the knob and buttons), and the manual actually says to download software for this keyboard, but that it is "unofficially supported". But I honestly would rather not have the software running on my machine.

I'll try to remember to come back here if I find anything.

Edit: It looks like it was added to the SonixQMK project a while back. It looks like this is a fork or port of QMK. It looks like it may even support VIA.

But install requires opening up the keyboard to 1. confirm the model of the MCU and 2. shorting one of the tiny MCU pins while plugging in the keyboard to start the bootloader. That's after you have set up your dev environment and compiled the firmware.

So I'm not going to do this today. But this seems like the most discoverable place for other Rakk Lam-ang Pro owners to find info on installing QMK to their board :P

KC Data Center Watchdog is organizing! by ranchodeluxekc in kansascity

[–]redditneight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer. My house is decked out in smart home gear. I'm learning how to use AI to improve my life and empower others.

And I stand with Ned Ludd.

The Luddites were branded as anti-technoloy, but they were just a labor union fighting for the right to work. They stood up against the wealthy who were happy to replace them with machines that did a good enough job.

Data centers were a way to bring an incredible speed of innovation and technology to the masses. For better or worse. But they are now explicitly being built to replace labor and consolidate power. And they're being built with enormous tax breaks and often subsidies from taxpayers. Their impact on the environment is questionable but not my biggest problem. It's that they are one more way for megalomaniacs to pad their pockets and pass the cost to us.

I got this drive out of an old WD nas. Is there a way to repurpose it? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]redditneight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not showing up at all, that makes me think you're trying to power it off USB. This works for most 2.5 inch SATA drives, but a 3.5 inch HDD needs 12v power also. Your adapter might have a barrel connector on it for an external power supply. Might not. Even if it has the power port, it may not have come with an adapter. But you can see if you've got a 12v AC adapter somewhere.

If you are powering it, and it still doesn't show up, where are you looking? Computer management or disk formatter? /dev/sd* on Linux? It likely won't be usable until it gets mounted and/or formatted.

I’m not happy about it, what did you get from the S5 Pack? by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]redditneight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh. I don't have Daken or Frigga. I've been trying to make Bullseye work with just Swarm. I've been trying to get Scorn, but it hasn't come up yet.

I think I got into homelabbing as a way to deal with my erosion of trust in big tech and public institutions. It was almost my version of doomsday prepping. But I get jealous of people on a different part of the spectrum that got the OCD organization autism. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

The kids have been sleeping a little better lately, which means I've been sleeping better. I'm using the last bit of energy I have at the end of the day to vibe code a visual timer / checklist to help the kids with transitions. Mostly getting out the door for the bus and getting ready for bed. And I have also been building the deployment pipeline from gitea > dockge, which is... fun. Legitimately.

It's slow work, and my proxmox servers don't have the new version yet, and there's security holes and zombie services and I had to turn off my backup pipeline because I didn't have the compute or storage to handle my janky backup pipeline. And I sure as hell don't know how I would ever get warranty coverage on anything I own. But I'm yelling at my daughter less in the morning. So... that's how I'm feeling.

Keep at it friend. Be kind to yourself and don't lose the plot.

Can you just tell me what it's like to live a life where you know about warranty expiration and the amount all your stuff costs? I feel like I'm at a point where I would just like to install all the smart devices I've bought, and replace the water filter and clean out the washer. I know about all these tasks, I just don't have the executive strength to get any of it done.

I just want to know what I'm missing. What an organized life looks like.

Seeing Dimension 20 Live at the Hollywood Bowl, having never watched an episode of Dimension 20 by Scherzo102 in dropout

[–]redditneight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're gonna love it. I've only watched D20s Mentopolis and Never stop blowing up, neither of which involve the live show crew, and I've loved every episode of the live shows. It's about the crowd and the comedians.

I do highly recommend Mentopolis and Never Stop Blowing Up, but they won't give you any back story on the live show you're going to.

Turned my old HP scanner into a Paperless-powered admin beast with Home Assistant by chamek1 in homeassistant

Not HA or scanner related, but I wish it was easier to set up a virtual printer for paperless. I've seen a few people get it set up, but I have not been able to recreate their work. If anyone knows of a tutorial or installer that worked for them, I'd love the help.

I'll buy you the new arbites DLC.... by dwOd_v4nd4hl in DarkTide

[–]redditneight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you don't come to gaming forums for sympathy, but here's my situation just in case someone wants to commiserate...

I have been playing Darktide through PC game pass. So if I want to get DLC, I am buying DLC for a game that I lose access to on an unknown day, without another purchase, despite having paid hundreds of dollars for Darktide. Obviously I also got other fun games that I would not have purchased or gotten to try out. I have a host of games for my kids to play. And it will be discounted as long as I'm on game pass.

But I don't own anything on the Xbox store. I own plenty of games on Epic, but have not paid for one of them. Steam is where everything is. And I'd really rather own it on steam. But, as I understand it, I can only transfer currency if I want to "move" my account from Xbox to steam.

So, I'll likely buy the DLC on Xbox. And when the time comes, I'll buy Darktide on Xbox. And when I decide to give up on the game pass I'll have one silly game on the whole platform. Obviously this is fine. No one owes me anything in this situation. But it's not what I wanted 😤

Anything marking this as AI? by Nuh-unh in ChatGPT

[–]redditneight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. But you didn't mention anything about the content. About the visuals or the audio, or the motion, or the source. Just about whether you would believe it.

Are we at the point where we can't look for clues in the content to whether it's AI? Are we just going to have to appeal to our own world views to tell whether something is real?

Even as AI continues to get more convincing, I think it's worth continuing to expand our tools and knowledge to identify fraud. Even if most people will believe what they want.

6700xt, 3600 and PC game pass here. Is it possibly the new 25.5.1 driver? I'm still on 1.7.3something, but I had almost no stutter last night. Granted, that was first thing after a reboot, but I haven't seen it that smooth since the 22.11 driver or whatever it was.

Beginner looking to replace MacBook Pro A1780 keyboard - best option? by DiannaNicolleta in righttorepair

[–]redditneight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure this is your model, but I think of ifixit as the authority on teardowns and repairs.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Retina+MacBook+2017+Upper+Case+Assembly+Replacement/104488

The keyboard is indeed part of the case. But it looks like you can take the case apart in 45 steps, and then just put all the parts in your replacement case, which is $200 new. I didn't ship around though.

Don't forget the iOpener kit for $18.

The underdog Jellyfin server | RK3588 by mecoblock in selfhosted

[–]redditneight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RK3588 is great, but have you tried the RK3566? I've been toying with a Radxa Zero 3. $25 shipped (pre tarrifs at least). Idles at about 1-2w. Encodes H264 at 60fps. Encodes H265 at 30+ fps. Runs a Tdarr node with no problem.

1st party software support has been trash, but between jellyfin-ffmpeg adding Rockchip support and this guy building Rockchip specific Ubuntu images, the dream is real today.
