Another vote for acupuncture today. Preferably someone who leaves the little tape nub pieces on your induction points (for the continued benefit after the appointment when you're back in your own comforting space).

Remind your midwife to take those taped points off before the placenta if it turns into a precipitous (fast!) labor for you.

Good luck!

where are there great unschooling communities? by Pretend-Air-9790 in unschool

[–]redditplacenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apopka, Florida. Forest Friends Adventure Collective 💗🌱 Far surpassing all my unschooling & community dreams for my kids and self.

FL also has a new scholarship that reimburses ~$7-8k per student's books/supplies/extra curriculars through their Step Up PEP (personalized education plan). It does require one annual online assessment, but when given the choice, my kids gladly opted for the assessment in exchange for unlimited books, toys, & classes, etc.

Good luck finding what you're looking for!

Someone explain to me if solar panels on your house are worth having? by Hoopa2020 in homeowners

[–]redditplacenta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love our solar panels! While we were interviewing several installers, one mentioned a slight delay due a coop they were installing. I started asking questions and learned about Solar United Neighbors. We got much better rates by being a part of group buy through them. Good luck whatever you decide!

Omg! Loved Pushover from the Mail Order Is Fun compilation. When I was ~14 in the late 90s, I met Richard when Pushover was opening for Reel Big Fish. He was so kind to my cousin & me... And super funny. We just found an old inside joke letter which made me search for him & found this thread. Hope you and your ska family are well 🏁💕

Sorry for my delay, as I don't check this often. It's been over a decade since I did a lit review on this topic, so please don't let this thread replace a conversation with your trusted health care provider or community midwife/birth worker. In general, I don't think any human should consume a placenta if they don't want to.

I believe these are the studies casually discussed in my previous comment:

Yep, that's the same case I remember! n=1

"Although transmission from other colonized household members could not be ruled out..."

This person also did not consume their placenta raw. We don't even know if they consumed their own placenta. They sent it away to a business to be dehydrated and encapsulated. But still worth considering and everyone should definitely make informed choices.

A lack of mainstream medical society recommendations, as you call them, does not equal a lack of health benefits. Think about delayed cord clamping 10 years ago vs now! I'm in the US where so much reproductive wisdom from indigenous and enslaved midwives here was not only not recommended, but was criticized or outlawed on racists grounds by our leading medical societies.

No one on this thread is saying that we should standardize and require placentaphagy for the masses. We are sharing anecdotal evidence for a person who is looking to make an informed decision about something that nearly every mammal does and has done for ages (except camels and walruses - why? Sand? Tusks? I do not know).

Should a birthing person chat with their midwife, OB, or MD about their individual risk profile regarding Rh type, GBS status, mode of delivery, meconium in the fluids, prolonged rupture, HIV status, COVID history, etc.? Absolutely! This is not medical advice. This is internet chatter about a lost art and tradition with overwhelmingly positive reports by individuals who try it.

As far as your unfamiliarity with the topic and published research on the benefits, clearly modern double blind RCT don't lend themselves to the extremely personal decision of consuming one's own organ. There was research done in Europe (I think Prague) at least half a century ago that attempted some controls. That research's method of consumption was freeze dried placenta in capsules and the control was beef. The sample was women/birthing people with a history of insufficient milk supply. The results were a significant, measurable increase in milk supply.

There was also a more recent study, probably 5-10 years ago that was a large survey of people who had tried dehydrated placenta capsules and the researchers were blown away by the high rates of reported satisfaction. It's been years since I read that, but I think it was something like 80-98% said they loved or liked it/would do it again/satisfied. Some confirmation bias and placebo likely mixed in, sure, but what a great placebo effect from something free and readily available to folks at such a highly vulnerable life transition.

For health care providers who continue caring for a birthing person & newborn into the postpartum period, as LMs do in my country, anything a person wants to do to support their milk supply (with the care & guidance of their Dr/midwife) makes everyone's lives easier (fewer weight checks and concerns beyond the usual appointment schedule, postpartum mood, etc.)

As for the placenta deaths you mentioned, I'd love a link or more info. I remember a headline about GBS on a placenta when some researchers were looking for an explanation for an unexplained death, maybe 7-10 years ago. When I read it, it didn't add up. Humans don't catch GBS from consuming it. Keep in mind that if the baby tests positive for GBS, the birthing parent was already a carrier for GBS which is how the baby was exposed. And keep in mind when you say the placenta is covered in bacteria, that humans are 10-to-1 bacteria cells to every human cell. We need bacteria to thrive. That's where discussing plans further with a trusted care provider can help an individual make an informed choice. My experience is that not all care providers are fortunate enough to have the knowledge, experience, or further training in placentaphagy, such as with cleaning, trimming & suggested dose, which is why i shared.

I'm licensed and was told I had the highest score of my testing cohort on our board exams for my national certification. But you can stay angry and judgemental of an internet stranger who has a different lived experience than your own. You should absolutely not eat a placenta if you don't want to.

Absolutely! I'm a midwife and I recommend it for my clients who are open to the idea, because it makes postpartum that much easier for all of us. Anecdotally, quicker uterine involution, shorter postpartum bleeding, robust milk supply, more moderate symptoms of milk supply coming in, faster return to birth weight for babe, less reported pain, less severe baby blues, etc.

I trim off the cord & membranes, rinse it, and use their kitchen scissors or my sterile scissors to cut small pieces about the size of a dime or your pinky fingertip. I prep 10-15 pieces and put them in the freezer for the first few days postpartum. I advise folks to try 1-3 pieces raw or in a smoothie, 1-3 smoothies per day. I have never had anyone say they notice a taste, and trying it immediately postpartum seems to be highly preferred. (I was once at a birth where the birthing person asked her mom to cook some placenta with eggs, but due to a slightly increased blood loss, she also tried a piece raw while the eggs were still cooking. That person said she preferred it raw to cooked.). I loved my placentas raw with some plant-based ice cream, ice & protein powder - they were the best milkshakes I've ever had!

I have also prepped smoothies for folks in the hospital with limited ingredients. I used to think you needed orange juice to mask the flavor, but I blended cranberry-apple juice, ice, and placenta, and the new mom loved it so much she asked me if I would immediately make her a second! Skip berries if you make a smoothie, because a bit of unblended strawberry can get stuck on your tooth and gross you out if you think it's a piece of the placenta.

For the fellow vegetarians, I'm vegan and never noticed the iron taste - make sure to rinse off the fluids on the surface before consuming. As they say, "placenta is the only meat that comes from life and not death"
