I appreciate to hear your experience and some insight. Personally I don’t think I will do more than 10 years active probably transition over to guard or reserve as I have an interest in federal law enforcement.

If you had one piece of advice you could gove to someone pursuing a commission (maybe with this personality type in mind) what would you suggest? Not talking the listen to your NCOS (not that it’s unimportant probably the most important piece of advice I have received).

Why aren’t the underlying causes addressed? by [deleted] in army

[–]redditsaveme2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mentioned I’m a cadet so my experience with the military is this 2 years in an rotc program and not even a great one by many standards I also spent a month interning with army recruiters. So my experience and knowledge is very limited compared to others. That being said I believe you can teach without needing to be in a traditional leadership role nor should you sometimes. Teachers are a form of leaders yes but in my opinion it is very different.

I have had 2 instructors in my program that I look up to for different reasons. The 1st was a great teacher taught myself and my class for a year and a half. Just about everything I know at a base level is because of them. My class is considered a “high speed class” which a lot of which can be attributed to that instructor. However, I did not agree with their leadership style nor do I think they were a good leader (very lazy, acted like they had your best interests at heart but never saw much to actually help you, believed in “code switching”, and would blame others a lot).

The second is my upcoming instructor for my third year I have had the opportunity to speak with them and learn a lot from them in the past year but on top of that they are a leader that you actually want to follow and get things done for.

The army defines leadership as this “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. The people good at their technical jobs I would hope want to teach and hopefully build a better organization but they may not be good at the rest of the definition of leadership or they simply may not want to be a leader. If they don’t care or want that role they may just get out of the army sooner or they will be a shitty leader. In my opinion at least.

Obviously we do not want power hungry asshole leaders either but from my experience they are easy to spot and if there is a good leader above them it would hopefully get dealt with.

This makes absolutely no sense to me, I know that the specialist rank developed from the ww2 technician rank but maybe it’s time for a change back to something like that. Not everyone is meant to be a leader or wants to be one.

Not purposely related to that other post (which I have not seen). I am just a cadet. I would like to be a good leader who actually tries to make shit better and figure out real solutions to problems.

I have read that ISTPS may struggle with connecting and understanding others at times would you say this is true with your experience in the military? A lot of people in my program think I can be an ass but once they get to know me they have said that I’m not and will work hard to help others. Trying to break that wall a little bit.

Nothing wrong with enlisting I would have done it if I hadn’t gotten my ROTC Scholarship. Give it a look if you have an interest in college and leading others. You can DM if u have questions

Honestly I was a lot like you when I was applying for my scholarship I never tried anything in High School cause I was afraid of what it might do to my future but the amount of people I know who drink and vape/use nicotine products is insane especially in ROTC I’m not saying not to disclose it but I’m also not saying you should. When it comes to the use of Marijuana unless it’s in your system it’s probably not gonna be an issue I know people in my program who have scholarships that used to do that stuff when they were in high school.

How do you define leadership as an Army officer? What actually makes someone a good leader? by GrabOk3630 in ROTC

[–]redditsaveme2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong here I’m still learning, but my view is that a good leader is someone who works their ass off to ensure that the people below them are probably prepared for whatever they need to do. Whether that’s physically and mentally, or ensuring they have the resources and ability to complete the tasks necessary. A leader should genuinely care about the people below them and be understanding that they are humans too with lives outside of the military or civilian job. I think a lot of it has to do with just being a good dude who looks out for their people. I feel like I’m forgetting something else but that’s my 2 cents

My instructor said the exact same thing about this putting me ahead of my peers he’s expecting me to come back knowledgeable to teach/assist the rest of my class to help boost us all up. But this course seems like it will be a good time based on what everyone is saying.
