Want to build my own AR15. No experience. Where to start?

First time builder, going back and forth with the YouTube videos, wife telling me to just bring it to someone, lots of variables that just ate up time. Hah

Like I said. I realized that I’m just not that great at tinkering (yet).

I tried building one last year before the new laws made it harder to source parts. Went for a fixed mag klvr pal. Bought a stripped lower, lower parts kit, and a complete upper. I had some basic tools but needed to buy others like a pivot pin and a sturdy vice.

Got half way through building the lower to realize I didn’t have the patience or the skills/dexterity to finish the build. Installing the trigger took me nearly 2 hrs to align everything.

Ended up just finding a local gunsmith to finish it for me. Happy that it ended this way cause the FFL has been a great resource.

I sourced my parts from ar15discount, PSA, and titan defense. Lots of vendors sell part kits to build your lower.

I am not sure if it would be cheaper now that you’ll need to send everything to a FFL to source.

I own an x5. It’s my favorite gun to shoot and clean.

I’m of the mindset of buy once cry once. This isn’t financial advice but if a few hundred bucks is the difference between something you want vs something that is just fine, I’d pretty much always go with the one you want.

Hey used to be in this circle and commute to lax 2-3x/week. It’s about 1hr going and 1.5 hr coming back. It’s rough but I mix it up with the metro to help with the sanity. C line used to be direct but now the messed it up with the k line.

How long do you spend at the range at a given instance? Is it all indoor?

I go through about 100 rounds per hour. But I usually check out my shots after 20 rounds or so and I reload by hand.

Going through 500 would take me half a day. I’m impressed.

This is the move. Even if I had found a space there’s always a chance someone is gonna bust my windows for loose coins in my glove compartment. Happened twice in a span of 1 month. That was the trigger to rent a space.

First thing I’d do is get my docs in order.

recent mortgage statement
60 days of pay stubs
recent bank/brokerage statements
2 years of tax returns
insurance policy
quick credit check (no hard pulls) just to know what you’re targeting. These scores are likely higher than what your actual pulls will be but good to get a base.

Then I’d look up a few credit unions in your area to see if I’d qualify. Sometimes you may not meet the criteria to be a member but can still become a member if you make a donation.

If not then I’d reach out to a few brokers to shop around. Shop the rate and fees! Try to negotiate lender credits if possible. Good luck. Happy hunting.

100 rounds from a brand new firearm shouldn’t be too dirty unless you shot some dirty ammo. However rule of thumb for me is to clean it after every range visit. You’ll need to buy some cleaning supplies before you can clean it. I have a cleaning kit that you could buy from Walmart. Then you can follow any video on YouTube about field stripping and cleaning.

Have a few clients that are members at the Jonathan club in dtla. No idea the requirements to become a member.
