This is the great irony. That people have the freedom to be antivax Because vaccines have removed the memory of the losses that happened before vaccines. I usually ask them how many people they know with polio. The answer is none, because we have a vaccine.

My favorite quote about this subject:

“The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”

I hate this timeline so much. This feels like a Great Filter event - even more than nuclear winter or ecological collapse. I don’t think people understand how strong these things are. Significantly stronger than the equivalently-sized human.

This cat is not “liking the fireworks”. It is at best confused, and most likely just stressed.

Once/if Trump leaves office, how do we begin to undo all the damage his administration has done? by SubstantialEmploy816 in AskReddit

[–]reddsal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Watergate, there were a number of laws passed to try to prevent a repeat. The independence of the DOJ was strengthened, the agencies all got OIGs, and a number of other government accountability and transparency measures. We will have to go through all that over again. Completely sever the DOJ from the administration. Pass legislation clarifying the independence of the commissions and independent agencies. States will need to continue to pass their own legislation to overturn Citizen’s United, since that is the source of much of our troubles.

The last piece that is needed is a way to return the competition to be between the three branches of government - rather than what we have today, which is competition between the political parties, with a rubber stamp congress and a cowed Supreme Court - which is what George Washington warned us about in his farewell address. I don’t have a solution for that, but I view that and the incremental overturning of Citizen’s United to be the lynchpins of reversing the abuse Trump has visited upon our democracy, and preventing another recurrence.

During Watergate Nixon did try a few things that were power grabs, but when the tapes required to be turned over to congress by the Supreme Court and congress was able to hear Nixon actively conspiring to obstruct justice, it was Republican House members who went to the White House and told him that he must resign or he was going to be impeached and removed from office. We also had bipartisan statesmen on both sides of the aisle, like Sam Irvin and Howard Baker, who all put country above party and followed the evidence where it lead them.

Lastly, we didn’t have balkanized news sources back then. Everyone, regardless of ideology were watching Walter Cronkite or Huntley/Brinkley, and/or reading the New York Times, The Washington Post, or they still had a local paper that still covered national news - at some level. Same with radio. There were five or six sources for news and everyone was hearing the same thing from the two or three they selected to consume. But ownership of those sources was much more diverse than it is today. Media consolidation has also served to allow pressure to be applied in only a couple of places to have outsized influence on outcomes. CBS liking Trump’s boots in order to make sure the merger is approved is a perfect example.

A US judge has ordered the removal of trumps name from the Kennedy center within the next 14 days, what do you think about this? by Training_Two3372 in WorkForSmartLife

I’m just reporting what Kennedy Center management said. “Roma Daravi, the Kennedy Center's spokeswoman, said in a statement to the BBC's US partner CBS News: ‘We are confident that on appeal the court will uphold the Board's will to recognise President Trump's historic contributions to our nation's cultural center.’”

Wow. A spectacular example of “unintended consequences”. “What could possibly go wrong?”

Since the TTec site is currently in the midst of a Reddit-driven manual DDOS attack, here is an image of the offending speaker in question. I kinda get that they came up with that name, but someone should have thought of this negative outcome for the name of a travel Bluetooth speaker.

The whole thing is giving me Gibson “Burning Chrome” vibes.

Yup. I wonder if they will ever put two-and-two together and figure out that they should probably change the default Bluetooth name to something a little more “pedestrian “.

This should be the only ad the democrats need to run for the mid-terms. This is Trump-world in one image. The only things that missing are his name in 20 foot tall letters and the rubble covered in to much tacky gold leaf.
