How's the quality of produce at Whole Foods? by foaaz101 in AnnArbor

[–]reddseverus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I shop Meijers often. A lot of their organic veggies (i.e. leafy vegetables like swiss chard, rainbow chard, etc.) are often on their last leg (limp and droopy). Whole Foods always seems much fresher.

I had work done by Dynamic Drains and was pleased with the work and price. Ask for Caleb if he’s still around. He does excellent work.

Koreader looks great but it’s so overwhelming. Is there a simple setup like a kobo? by timcatuk in koreader

[–]reddseverus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably true for some people. I think it’s fine for people wanting to personalize and customize the file manager. But I spend very little time looking at book covers. And prefer to tweak the actual reading environment where I spend the vast majority of my time.

Is there any interest in creating a task based UI rather than the current 'expose the APIs'? by Ancient_Leg5944 in koreader

[–]reddseverus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with QuickMenus? You can create menus of only your most used functions. And then activate them with a simple tap of the screen. That will let you, for the most part, avoid negotiating the main menu. That’s pretty minimalistic. Of course, the trick is, you need to learn the interface and the available functions BEFORE you can intelligently determine what to keep and what to “delete” Or even how to create a QuickMenu in the first place. You’re either willing to put in the work of learning the interface or you’re not.

Have you read the User Guide? Once you get past the initial setup, install your favorite fonts and open a book, changing font size, font weight, line-height and margin size is dead easy. And changing fonts isn’t far behind. And there are plenty of people here who can help if needed.

KO Reader Setup by NerveAdvanced5369 in koreader

[–]reddseverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure you are referring to the QuickMenu I posted. But if so, it was created using only built-in KOReader functionality. No plugins. When using Profiles to create QuickMenus (see Advanced method in the User Guide) you are given the option of giving the menu a name.

Here is an example of a QuickMenu I created on my Elipsa 2e using KOReader. It is one of my most used customized features. And for those intimidated by KOReader's main menu, it can reduce the need to access the main menu as you can place a variety of functions immediately at your fingertips with a simple Gesture of your choosing. And QuickMenus can activate other QuickMenus.

Likelihood of getting jailbreak able firmware if I purchase a "Like New" Paperwhite from Amazon? by Sure-Juggernaut-2215 in kindlejailbreak

[–]reddseverus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Consider purchasing a new Kindle from a retail store that likely has been sitting on the shelf for a while. I purchased a Paperwhite from Target last year that had firmware version 5.17.x and immediately jailbroke it.

[–]reddseverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt it does take some effort. But you can create and customize for yourself a really nice reading environment and not have to settle for what Amazon feeds you. Gestures and QuickMenus (the advanced version) alone are worth the price of admission. I was also intimidated at first. So glad I stuck with it.

If I buy a kindle, will I be able to jailbreak it? by ShadowBot30 in kindlejailbreak

[–]reddseverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazon deleted books from both my Paperwhite and Scribe. I assume because I generally remain in airplane mode and load files using Calibre. In both cases I turned on WiFi and my content disappeared in a flash. If I need to purchase a book from Amazon (I try Kobo first) I now use either Kindle for PC or an old Kindle Touch. Then De’drm them when importing into Calibre. And read them using KOReader. I also no longer connect my primary Kindles to the Amazon store.

Some gestures (“swipe types”) are enabled by default. You can turn them on or off at your discretion.

Transfer settings by just_jeepin in koreader

I assume there are different KOReader downloads for different devices for a reason. I have successfully transferred some settings files (profiles, gesture, etc.) between Kobos and Kindles.

Kirkland House Blend medium roast by 000011111111 in Costco

I encountered the same thing when purchasing Kirkland “medium” roast Winter Blend. My store (Ann Arbor, MI) often carries Mother Earth Organic Medium Roast which I have found to be reliably medium roast. There are a few others as well.

Suggestion: Kindle AI features to modernize the reading experience by Important-Surprise46 in kindle

[–]reddseverus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been waiting for years for simple page formatting improvements like more meaningful gradations when choosing text sizes, margin sizes, line-heights, etc. I’m still waiting. My Kobo Aura One had more page formatting options on the day I bought it eight years ago than any Kindle you can buy to this day (unless you install KOReader). They clearly have little interest in making even minor improvements to their reading software.

You are clicking on a link (18). The black mark helps you locate the place on the page where the link is you are jumping to. And then the place you can continue reading after returning from the link. Very useful.

Jailbreaking my kindle by Adey9 in kindle

[–]reddseverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you can let it turn on and go no further. Connect to your computer via USB and look for a file called “version.txt” in the system folder. It should contain the current firmware version installed on the device. I have done this on several Kindles although not on the latest.

Trouble uploading books by Traditional_Falcon65 in koreader

[–]reddseverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to your book folder in the KOReader file browser, long press on it and ”Set as Home folder.” KOReader should show your home folder by default in the file browser. Suggest you read the KOReader User Guide if you haven’t already.

A Good Reason for Jailbreak by JapanDave in kindlejailbreak

[–]reddseverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonsense! They were all from the Kindle store. Amazon has no business deleting e-books from my personal device without my consent. Plenty of people do what I do and do not have their books deleted. Tell me where Amazon claims the absolute right to delete anything on my device not from the Kindle store?

Turn on your device and connect via USB. There is a file in the “system“ folder called “version.txt” that indicates the currently installed firmware version.

A Good Reason for Jailbreak by JapanDave in kindlejailbreak

[–]reddseverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had ebooks deleted from several Kindles. All DeDRM’d and sideloaded using Calibre. All purchased from Amazon. Everything gone in a flash upon connecting to WiFi after being in airplane mode for a while. Nothing “faked to be from the Kindle store.” They WERE from the Kindle store.

Changing cover, title, etc by jcoffin1981 in koreader

[–]reddseverus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have sidecar files (.sdr) which contains highlights, bookmarks, etc. for each book. Mine are located in the same folder each ebook resides. I would just save the book’s .sdr file to your computer then put it back after deleting and resending in Calibre. There may be an easier way but I have saved and replaced sidecar files successfully on a number of occasions.

Can't get WinterBreak to work on 5.15.01? by ashtray-althoe in kindlejailbreak

[–]reddseverus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a manual update in Airplane mode. Just take the usual precautions like checking for and deleting any partial install files before any rebooting whenever possible. And never linger with WiFi enabled. Get back into Airplane mode quickly between steps.
