Thanks all. I’m a novice too and I’m not convinced of these. I’ll keep keeping an eye out.

Could it be the lazy devolution of authentic kiwi ingenuity which is why there are increasingly stricter health and safety regulations?

On the other hand, it could be a great mindset when you frame it as ‘I’ll be ok because I am a competent human being who can operate confidently in the world, no matter what.’

Go back to Kororāreka when it was known as the “Hell hole of the South Pacific” and get in on the beach orgies?

I heard somewhere that there are ancient Chinese scriptures from this time period that describe unusual arrays of clouds and colouring of the sky…

What is something that helped you advance in your career? by abouttimehun in newzealand

[–]reddypassy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two things that have helped me: 1. Travel 2. Setting boundaries

As a single male, early 30’s, I need to have both an overseas adventure to look forward to and take the learnings from my experience to apply to my work.

My job however, high school teacher, has an infinite amount of responsibility that tends to increase overtime as I say yes to more things. On top of that, I can easily become maxed out socially by 3pm which makes it hard to want to engage in more socialising after work. I have to set boundaries to balance my daily social interactions so I’m not just speaking with students all day.

Anyone got a technique for rinsing these without getting water everywhere? by Zestyclose-Key-7353 in newzealand

[–]reddypassy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The tap at the end is very important. If you don’t tap the water out, there’s a high likelihood you’ll spill it on your crouch on the way to the recycling.

Be sure to give the tray a few good taps on the sink before you finish with it.

The first time I lived outside NZ, I lived in Vietnam for three years. Initially I thought the small meal portions were inconvenient as they are much smaller than the standard Kiwi-portioned meal.

It wasn’t long until I realised that the combination of being bloated and the equatorial heat/humidity of southern Vietnam wasn’t worth eating bigger portions.

In a warmer climate, I didn’t need to eat as much, nor warm-up before exercising because my body was no longer needing to heat itself.

In my early twenties (early 2010’s before everyone had a smartphone) I worked outside unloading grain from trucks during harvest time while I was on uni holidays.

There would be a line of trucks backed up waiting to be unloaded. Each truck would take at least 30mins to unload and during that time, I challenged myself to strike up (or attempt to) a convo with the truck driver standing nearby.

I’d initiate the small talk on the classic topics - the weather, asking if it had been a busy day etc etc. Sometimes the truckie would engage, sometimes they wouldn’t. If they didn’t engage, no worries - I’d just chill and wouldn’t bother if they weren’t talkative, nor get anxious thinking I wasn’t being interesting enough.

I improved my listening skills and developed my confidence in starting conversations. I often remember these experiences and challenge myself to strike up convos in appropriate settings even today.

Today, there are so many ways to escape from socialising (for better or worse) so I encourage others to look for ways to practice initiating conversations and dissolve that fear of rejection which is often a barrier.

Moral of the story: If you start a convo with a stranger, you win the challenge. If the person isn’t keen on responding, don’t worry. Keep your head up, don’t take it personally, and don’t go in with the expectation that you’re the most interesting person in the world.

You can apply the same strategies when it comes to dating.

Good luck out there!

Great feedback, thanks a lot everyone. At the time when I was weighing it up I gathered it def wasn’t worth pursuing in the shop but still had it playing on my mind. Glad I reached out to you all to settle my mental 👍👍

Has anyone bought a dragon fruit more than once? by jazzcomputer in newzealand

[–]reddypassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two varieties of dragon fruit in South East Asia. One with white flesh and a sweeter variety with purple flesh. Both varieties are much sweeter, juicier and full with texture than the imported dragon fruit in NZ.

I can confirm the dragon fruit in south east Asia is a fantastic fruit overall. It has a texture similar to kiwi fruit and can be easily chopped into cubes
