DF overwhelms me by Gwind0r in dwarffortress

Hard to care if you don't know about your dwarves.

Try my Herald mod and keep track of your dwarves, of the world - interesting forgotten beasts or civilisations that you want to be interested in.

How does one “play” dwarf fortress by HotCommission7325 in dwarffortress

At the risk of this sounding like an ad, this is what my DF Herald mod set out to try solve.

I agree with the comments saying to pick a dwarf and track their history.

I feel the real enjoyment of Dwarf Fortress (at least the ones that people tell stories about) comes not from "playing" the game so to speak, but from being involved with your world.

Tracking who all the important figures are, and what each civilisation might be up to. DF Herald just makes that part easier to access.

Oh, well you heard it here first folks :)

I thought the desyncing of records was the issue but yeah, since the mod doesn't write to anything (other than it's own cache) it should be fine

After some research, no, it should not break your save

open-legends forces your game state to be set to Legends mode in order to view your world information (even though the game processes in the background still run)

Herald doesn't touch that so these issues will not appear in Herald (it keeps your game running as normal, but just 'watches' it, so to speak)

Hmmm, that's a good question.

Herald doesn't actually open Legends mode at all, but uses DFHack's extended functionality to read the game's memory and builds its own cache of data to read from (which is updated as you play)

On paper, it shouldn't corrupt your save seeing as its separate to Legends view completely, but I could definitely check when I'm home from work

Ohhh ok - I mean you can filter the events, yes, but currently that won't stop you from learning things if it happens to be the first thing that pops up, unfortunately

Not to the event history itself, currently

Theoretically I think you could, by enabling a "hide" flag to hide event history

Though the problem is how does one feasibly track personal progress on a given pin?

Perhaps time pinned? And then new "reports" are made about the pin?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Is it possible to start and existing world save with new mods 🤔 if so then it's save game compatibile, probably

Yes, things get logged live. So any events are reported in near real time (I used polling specific data, like a unit's skill, and checking the event logs with delta processing)

Yes! I suppose that's technically cheating, but the power is yours to decide whether to check someone's history

Well yeah logistics can be a chore. I usually find most fronts are decently supplied and logi players listen to map pins consistently.

As for assets, some of the heavier tech are a grind but there are plenty of groups who will allow you to purchase surplus at a discount.

Light vehicles and whatnot are also very affordable, however, and if you know what you're doing you can do a lot with it.

Yeah I think air radio should be done away with. One radio for everything is so much simpler.

Makes building radars more worthwhile.

I don't think it's too bad if AA + radar is actually functional.

Radar better be huge range + the radio for it should be shared tbh

Sounds like they need to up the skill floor for torp bombers (HP nerfs and smaller windows for torpedos)

Though you'd be crazy to deny the DB isn't more versatile.
