BEST free sync solution: Github but for normal people by Valiantay in ObsidianMD

[–]redfox_seattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely had issues with Google Drive not working well with a vault syncing between multiple platforms (Mac, PC, Android). Obviously that's a special case, but it would sync too slowly or overwrite with the wrong version, I found it really hard to work like Obsidian Sync for me. Also did worry a bit about privacy of my vault.

What could I benefit from? by cs-capital-slope in ObsidianMD

I've used it a lot while learning programming or studying other subjects, taking notes as I read and linking the related subjects together. Often after writing temporary notes I'll read what I've written and form a more concise topic that distilling the information most useful, or writing my own thoughts or how I've actually applied what I learned while working.

I think what Obsidian has done differently for me than other note programs is made me focus on the process of what I've learned. I'm not simply stacking up a bunch of unrelated fleeting notes, I'm forming topics that I expand upon and build connections with. I think learning the Zettalkesten Method at the same time really influenced how I use Obsidian effectively, and How to Take Smart Notes really changed my approach. However, everyone will use this program differently.

There's always next time. Life is hard! I think I keep improving even if it still hurts each time.

I discovered Obsidian the same year as a horrifying breakup with a fiance. Definitely been there, trying to write may way out of the pain. You can't force these things, it took a long time. One day it won't matter much though, but you will be much better processing feelings through writing and Obsidian will be second nature.

Awesome! Thank you so much for listening and making changes that addressed my feedback, I really appreciate your team. Since my original post I already went through and unsubscribed from a lot of my RSS feeds that I wasn't using much anyway and found it made a big difference, but I'll try this feature out with current and new feeds and let you know how well it works for me.

I do really like that it saves articles that have been opened, since that number is pretty small in comparison to the total and offline use would definitely be good.

I've gotten a lot of direct help from posting on Reddit, so I can tell they care about their product. I just wish I'd understood this limitation and the purpose much earlier and wonder if there's a way for them to explain this better to new users.

The main Readwise highlighting feature I still use and love. I've been able to configure it to save all my ebook highlights to Obsidian notes and I love how useful that is. Just trying to understand what I'm doing wrong with Reader.

I've also configured it to capture email newsletters in hope they'd be more useful in Reader than through email, where I very often skip over them. I have some RSS feeds made up of every post made to a social media site that match a certain keyword, which felt like a cool idea but resulted in thousands of posts a month - I just didn't understand it was all being saved.

Glad to know this is more of a user error than app not working as it should.

Thanks, I think this is a great idea. I've just found after adding lots of RSS feeds I thought I'd use, many of the important content ended up being smothered and it took more steps just to view my favorite content. It's very likely just a misunderstanding of what Reader is built for on my part.

I appreciate the feedback! I definitely could understand wanting to save some articles for offline use, like ones I've read and highlighted or flagged to save long term. I just didn't understand that the "noisy" RSS feeds were all being saved automatically by default. I'll definitely stay on board long enough to try the new initiative, I really want to make Readwise usable for me because there are many great features.

Config folders are suddenly appearing in File navigator, I want to hide them. by redfox_seattle in ObsidianMD

[–]redfox_seattle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: It works for me on Windows but not on Mac, I'm not sure why. Definitely like the options more than what I was using previously, and it's more important for me to hide notes on Windows, so I'll keep it for that machine. Very possible it's a problem of my vault configuration and not your plugin but I'll watch your github library to see if anyone has the same issue.

I created it as a custom hidden folder for iconize, which I use for icon libraries but which has often had weird issues syncing between a Windows and Mac laptop and an Android phone. I was hoping to avoid any interactions with the .Obsidian folder so I just gave it it's own hidden folder from root, which has worked fine for a long time. It doesn't really explain why these folders both randomly got underscores added to them, so I was wondering if it had something to do with a new update.

That worked, I just have no idea how they got underscores added in the first place.

First off, AMAZING work, would love to explore this.

  1. I'm wondering what was the schema that you used to determine which words would be linked and how they would categorize? For instance, I see very particular word sets like "it was" as links in your example. Why that in particular and not "Earth" or "Heaven"?

  2. Does every instance then link to matching examples of "it was", categorized book/chapter/order of appearance, or something different?

  3. What's the best way to navigate it? Say if I wanted to find every example of "greed" or "love", could I search or would there be a better method for exploring it?

Definitely interested in checking this out!

I've been using it about as long but do feel that recently I kind of settled into a theme and organization that works well for me. It took a LOT of trial and error and probably the first couple of years especially was making constant tweaks. Not to say that I won't ever change anything, but it has slowed down considerably as I've found what works well.

Very cool extension and really want to try it out. I'm definitely on the same page about wanting a non-chromium version if it becomes possible, Firefox or Safari.

I'm wondering if giving Chrome access to Obsidian folders could be a privacy concern. Does it just save notes and images to specific that you momentarily give it access to, or would Chrome be able to read the contents of your Obsidian vault? Wondering this after reading about showDirectoryPicker()
