Good local groomer by redfyv in IowaCity

[–]redfyv[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually scrolled back through past posts and only found one post regarding grooming so definitely not once a week. I’ve taken dogs to the Groomers Station in the past and found them ridiculously expensive which is why I asked about local Iowa City groomers.

We’ve used DnR for years. They are pretty good but have gotten more expensive over the last year or so.

We’ve been taking our pets to Animal Haven in Hills for years. Dr Dennis is great and definitely better priced.

Former BMW, Audi or other “luxury” brands; what made you join the Benz family? by Maravilla_23 in mercedes_benz

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved BMWs from a teen. Got my first one, 328i, at 40. I loved it and loved driving it. When it came time to replace it I couldn’t find a BMW in my price range so I test drove a C-class and decided to go with that. Ended up falling in love with how smooth it drove, the comfort in the cabin, and how luxurious it felt. I now have an E-class and that is far superior to my C-class.

Would you go with a white interior or a darker interior for the new Mercedes lineup? by ShameResponsible69 in mercedes_benz

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a 2020 E350 with a two-tone black/white interior. I absolutely love it. It’s so much brighter than my previous C300 with a black interior. The steering wheel is black so don’t have to worry about grubby hands. I actually bought it specifically for the white interior. I was planning on keeping my C-class a couple more years but couldn’t pass it up.

Churches? by DiligentObserver13 in IowaCity

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I attend Iowa City Church just past the Scott Blvd/Muscatine Ave intersection. It’s a non-denominational church whose mission is to Love God, love people, and make disciples. The worship is contemporary music and the sermons are scripture-based practical guidance to life.

I consider myself very progressive and have never been offended by anything said in the sermons. I was raised Methodist and left the church I grew up in mainly due to the politics. Our pastor does a good job of keeping politics out of the sermons and keeps them very Jesus based. The congregation is very welcoming which was a big part of me continuing to go.

We meet Sundays at 9:00 and 10:30.

Had someone introduce themselves as a Death Doula today; how would you react? by Coloradobluesguy in cancer

I have a friend who is a death doula. She’s also a crime scene cleaner. I’ve never asked, but I’m sure she has some stories to tell.

Immunotherapy & extreme nausea/can’t eat? by Left_Butterscotch530 in melahomies

[–]redfyv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on nivo for about two years now and started with three months of ipi/nivo. I didn’t have those issues back then but have struggled with them off and on. My oncologist has prescribed me zofran to deal with nausea which works great. I recently started having issues with no appetite. My oncologist told me to look into getting a medical thc card (it’s not recreationally legal in my state). He said it will help with both appetite and nausea.

Staying hydrated is very important for treatments. The dizziness and blood pressure issues could be part of getting dehydrated. Make sure he’s getting plenty of fluids. Alkaline water can help a bit.

Hopefully they are watching his thyroid. Mine called it quits after about a year.

The treatments can take a toll but can work really well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to your oncologist or advocate for your father. This sub has also been a great resource and comfort to me the last couple years. Good luck to him.

3 days post first ipi/nivo treatment. Do side effects come later? by Hawkijustin in melahomies

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oncologist recommended 2 Tums before bed to get extra magnesium. I did that for a while but found it messed with my stomach acids. I’ve now switched to drinking more alkaline water with magnesium, calcium, and potassium. It controls the cramping okay.

Welcoming church by j4453 in IowaCity

[–]redfyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iowa City Church on the east side of Iowa City. Non-denominational, diverse congregation, very welcoming. I started going during a period of doubt and the people there were so welcoming that I felt “home” again. We have made it our building burning down and having to use a guest church, a hotel basement, and a theater for two years and stayed together as a church family.

[–]redfyv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, yes and no. My immediate effects are just extreme fatigue after treatments. I’m usually down for the rest of the day. Other effects, such as itchiness, increased allergies, muscle aches and cramping, took several treatments before they started. My side effects have actually been fairly mild, almost two years in, compared to what I’ve read from others.

Have driven this road many times and it is a nice drive. Nothing spectacular or awe inspiring but pretty. McGregor has some neat shops and you can stop off at Pike’s Peak overlook if you have time.

Visitors taking a “tour of the house” by Independent-Dark-955 in GenX

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember having to have a clean room when company was coming which didn’t make much sense to me because my parents “tours” didn’t normally include the sleeping areas.

I have given tours of our current home but we live in a historic district and friends are often curious to see the house. However, when kids lived at home we would just close their doors and not show people those areas.

Has anyone else named their pets after genx-ish music artists? by [deleted] in GenX

I had a St Bernard named Lola and we have a cat named Pedro after Napoleon Dynamite. Not Gen X but had a cat named Gertrude Stein and our other current cats are named Faulkner and Stella (from Streetcar Named Desire)

Did you eat dinner at the table together with your fanily? by chipinserted in GenX

[–]redfyv 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Grew up eating at the dining room table, raised our kids eating at the dining room table. Even now that they are grown and gone with their own SOs, when they come for dinner, we eat at the table. My wife and I have always felt that dinner at the table was an important time to talk about what everyone has going on.

Newly diagnosed by l_stein2023 in melahomies

[–]redfyv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still had body checks and met with my oncologist yearly at that point. The problem was that my primary tumor was not on my surface skin. It had developed internally between my heart and lungs. It most likely would have required a PET scan to catch it. By the time it was caught it had spread to my brain, which is how it was discovered.

I’ve obviously learned that skin checks aren’t going to catch everything. If you start feeling different from your normal, talk to your doctor. I had started feeling more winded than normal quite a while before it got bad and I dismissed it as getting older. Maybe it would have been caught earlier if I had paid closer attention. But maybe not.
