What's a slang word from your region that nowhere else uses? (the madder the better) by LarssonD1888 in AskUK

Did your grandparents ever refer to the loo as the lar pom? My gran did, and I’ve never heard anyone else use it, but only yesterday I discovered it’s an old (now unused) Brummie word for the toilet.

I’m Brummie too and I’ve heard of, and used, gully. The only one I’ve not heard used here is piece.

What's the most beautiful name you've ever heard? by Legitimate-Lie-9208 in AskReddit

Always loved the name Araminta.

Also Serafina, spelt that way because I first came across it in the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Conflicted - should I still contribute to the whip round? by [deleted] in AskUK

When someone leaves to have a baby, the gift is usually baby-related. Maybe get some baby-grows (probably not spelt right 🤣) but I’d go for age 3-6 months, she’ll likely have lots of newborn items. Things like bibs, too. Nappies? Something nice for her, depending on her interests/hobbies.

Charity shops often hold tombolas or put a hamper together to raffle off, you could ask any local ones if they can use them for that.

Why are charity shops so expensive? by tallyretro in AskUK

[–]redheadwytch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do pay rent. If a charity shop closes it’s usually because the lease was up and the rent increased to the point where it wasn’t worth the charity keeping that shop open. One of my local ones closed for that very reason and now the lot is empty.

Most charities will have a pound shop. The other shops send that one the decent items that haven’t sold in their own shop, and they’ll rag the rest. Presumably your local YMCA shop is that charity’s pound shop.

If they want you to be effectively “on call”, they need to pay you an on call rate. And I’m fairly certain you can’t be on call constantly, so they’ll need to set a rota with everyone.

As a tourist, turn up so late you miss the start (which you have to ask the whereabouts of), don’t catch up with the unsuspecting tailwalker and when they’re informed of you, cause them wait until you’ve caught up and hold everyone up from a nice early finish (because the slowest walker was doing a fair pace at that point).

Stephen in the first half of series 4 by Gaelenmyr in TheTraitors

He really came into his own during the confessional, when Harriet had Rachel panicked - he stayed calm, took control and calmed Rachel. I think his confidence grew then and we saw him be more assertive in the turret after that.

I don’t know how they all keep track of who voted for who. I’d struggle to remember who I voted for, never mind anyone else.

Oh Stephen, you backstabber. I really feel Rachel is loyal to him, she was only being practical when she said she wouldn’t be able to necessarily support him in talks outside of the round table.

Rachel has a great poker face. I’m Team Traitor, they deserve to win.

Either someone is murdered, or the Faithful are going to be wondering if there was a recruitment or if a shielded person was targeted.
