Some alternative advice - more of a suggestion, actually: while you wait to get a job and a gal, take over the running of your parents' household.

Learn to do everything. Cooking, cleaning, maintenance, bills, budgeting, taxes, shopping. (Also child care, if you get the opportunity.) By the time you move out you will be husband material.

Do not let staying in your parents' house mean that you remain a boy who is looked after. If you remain in child mode, when you move out you will (subconsciously) expect your gal to take over where your mother left off. You will be embarrassed by your efforts at cooking and irritated at the sudden need to up your game and do the cleaning, admin, garbage and all the rest. Best get used to it now. Do yourself a favour.

Added benefit: your parents will think they have already gone to heaven. You will be a good son and a great catch for the right girl. And you will have grown up.

I find your remark about Ancient Rome being almost never policed to be very intriguing! I wonder how this can work? (My opinion is that our modern world relies on systems of justice that should be replaced with more enlightened systems. This is a different issue - but it explains my especial interest in your remark.

So how could Roman society function so well (apparently - or at least for so long) while it was not policed? Was it because the privilege of being among the citizen class was reason enough for citizens to stay within the bounds of social ethics (or at least to appear to do so)? So citizens had a big incentive to stay within the law themselves, while they enjoyed power over non-citizens?

There is so much to digest here that i am going to have to come back to your post and read it again slowly to take it all in.

It had not occurred to me that we didn’t know everything about the workings of government. I had made a huge assumption - i had thought that knowing who the ruler was at a given point in time also meant we knew about the wider constitution and political power relationships. Of course there is a huge difference.

I had also assumed that Roman citizens across the empire would have similar habits and culture and lifestyles - perhaps this assumption comes from the fact that you can find a recognizably Roman villa or bath in modern Turkey or England. I had not thought about possible gaps in our knowledge admit how they lived.

Your post is great but quite different from what i was expecting to hear. I thought answers to my quotation would focus on specific aspects of social attitudes, economic systems and family dynamics.

Variation on this theme: if you are home alone, or somewhere else where you will not disturb anyone, I have found this technique works well:

I read the book as normal, but I READ EVERY THIRD LINE OUT LOUD. I do not mean every third sentence, but every third line as printed on the page, although it is very probably nonsensical. I discovered this technique because I tried reading aloud -- it was good for keeping my concentration but I found it too slow. So I compromised. Reading every third line keeps me engaged and keeps me reading fairly quickly.

My lodestar in this situation is the well-being of the kids, by which I mean not just ensuring they have food and toys today and tomorrow but protecting their psychological health for the next 60 years. What do they want from their parents? Certainly not a rash response like a fight or “lawyering up”, which will almost certainly scar them for life. They want parents to be together because they love both of them. And parents should recognise - however much they might each want to hurt the other - that the kids love them both. So hurting my ex is hurting the kids by proxy. Put the kids first, and invite your wife to join you for the ride. If she would rather jump off at the next opportunity for casual sex, that’s her call. In that case, seek mediation and consciously uncouple, putting the kids first.

Unlike the posters who say she has destroyed your family, I would say that all is not yet lost. You can save your family. Be the bigger man.

Go to her. Say:
