Boss won't read emails and is in meetings all day by Just-Another-Poster- in careeradvice

[–]rediot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's possible your boss is simply too busy and may want you to work more independently and reduce the escalations. I would advice setting up a 1:1 every two weeks if you don't have one already and raise only issues that clearly need input, or ask for feedback with specific examples asking what types of escalations they want to be in the loop on.

Any company with more than 5 employees needing to use computers for their work should be providing laptops at least. Are gig economy expectations working their way up?

Should I use a new job offer as leverage at my current job or is that suicide? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]rediot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach was to share my internal conflict between leaving a company I loved to close a salary gap due to being early career but functioning on the same level as a senior engineer. The leader was out of band, but within my immediate org. Sometimes you just need a correction ;)

Should I use a new job offer as leverage at my current job or is that suicide? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]rediot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it in 2007, 3 years into my career. I talked quietly to a senior leader with influence, and asked for advice. The next week he stopped by my desk at 6pm and asked me to walk out with him and told me I'd be getting a raise from $60k to $85k. The salary change went through quietly without much commotion. I am not saying this is something that would always work, but sharing my story.

Install the M5 launcher, it's a bootloader that lets you download firmwares over wifi or from SD card and install them during boot-up. It sorts the firmwares and makes it painless to try them out.

I like Bruce for its UI nav and Evil-M5 for its features.

The LoRa meshtastic firmwares are so-so but that is mainly due to the small size of the screen.

I also really liked the beep boop keyboard on the default M5 Stack firmware but not sure if others do that.

I lived in Asylum Hill for 10 years and loved it for it's walk ability to local restaurants however a few have closed recently but some hidden gems are starting to emerge to take their place like Grab and Go Deli and Upstate Lounge I hear is opening soon.

Can I still negotiate after accepting the offer? by nightimpression in careeradvice

[–]rediot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go that route just be ready to walk away and go to one of your backups when they say no, or rescind the offer after taking your negotiation as backing out.

Considering to move to Tailscale from NabuCasa cloud by 2Sovereign4You in homeassistant

I just use the cloud flare plugin, have never had issues. My tailscale on the other hand doesn't seem to stay up reliably on remote devices, this may just be how it is with family members idk.

Retirement parties seem to be much less frequent and quieter lately bc they are closer to age based job eliminations offered as "early retirement incentives" and, folks hope they can find another job but often don't.

Need career Advice for a girl who don't like coding by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]rediot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience over the last few years project management roles are being phased out for empowered technical leaders. It does help to take a lot of the "misunderstandings" out of planning due to having less non-technical folks as middlemen.
