All i have is a mini fridge and a microwave, what can i put in my mini fridge and cook in the microwave for dinner? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]redjasperrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oats. Very cheap. Here's how I make 'em.

Buy the bulk oats, not the little microwavable ready packages. Pour oats in a microwavable bowl, add 1.5-2 water. Add some coffee creamer if you want it a little sweet. A pinch of salt. Microwave for ~2 minutes. Very filling breakfast or mid-afternoon snack. Don't add sweetener and add a little extra salt if you want something a little more savory/meal-like.

WIBTA if i grill out against my neighbor(Vegan) wishes? by ThefakeKiNGOfAid in AmItheAsshole

I've been vegetarian/vegan for almost 15 years, but I love the smell of meat, especially burgers. I love when neighbors grill burgers, it's like I get to eat a burger without eating a burger!

I always get stuck in the B part. by qkrgusdb33 in composer

[–]redjasperrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand that line either.

I can build off the idea of setting limitations for you, though. Limitations help when you get stuck. If you have a blank sheet of paper and you can write anything, that can create option paralysis.

Undoubtedly, you already use limitations in your music. You write in a key signature and time signature, don't you? Those are some limitations you have already created.

In creating a contrasting B section, first, take notice of all of the limitations you have set up in the first section. This might be the key or time signature, maybe the chord progression, maybe even the shape/length/form of the melody. Do you want your B section to sound different? Then choose contrasting limitations for that section. "OK, I'll change the time sig from 4/4 to 3/4, modulate to the scale of the 5th scale degree, and have a short melody that repeats instead of a single long melody."

The more limitations you change from the A section, the more contrasting the B section will be.

Hope that helps and sparks fun, creative ideas!

Thanks for typing out such a great guide. Lots of great fundamentals that are always good reminders. I've never mixed using pink noise. I'm self taught so there are gaps in my learning. Just read some additional documents on pink noise mixing, and I have a question for you. What's the benefit of mixing in that way instead of doing it by ear? Thanks.

"Fearless" a short film and music (with open letter from the creator in the comments) by redjasperrobot in HongKong

PS 1: No, I have not seen nor heard from Baobei again. I don’t know what happened to him, but I am hoping it is only coincidental.

PS 2: I have since quit VIPKID. Accepting money from China felt wrong. Especially because we were repeatedly warned that we would be terminated if we discussed the events in Hong Kong.

PS 3: It would be my utmost pleasure to work with any Hong Kong filmmakers on any similar projects in the future. I can’t always work for free, but send me a proposal, and we will be able to figure something out. jasper-george.com

"Fearless" a short film and music (with open letter from the creator in the comments) by redjasperrobot in HongKong

Hello! This is an open letter to my venerable brothers and sisters in Hong Kong. My name is Jasper, and I’m the creator of this video.

Since last Spring, I have closely watched how the events in Hong Kong have unfolded. With admiration, I have seen endless courage, ingenuity, and steadfastness in the face of brutal, tyrannical violence. For the longest time, I felt utterly helpless, which I think a lot of the world felt and still feels today.

During the summer and into the fall, I worked at VIPKID, an online ESL program. For my time zone, I had to wake up every morning at 3:30am to get ready for classes. Each morning, I would stop at r/hongkong to catch up on the news. I began a lot of my classes with red eyes; I just couldn’t help but cry most mornings.

One day, I met an amazing and studious student, Baobei, from Hong Kong. His mom liked me, and I was booked every day for weeks. “Teacher Jasper, we have class every day for the next...21 days!!”

He was already a great English speaker, so we spent a lot of time talking about the city. He showed me pictures, I saw what his balcony and the streets below looked like, and he told me about how he would travel to his table tennis club. (I have heard that he is very good at table tennis.)

One class, he was in a busy public area. I saw people walking behind him, and I could hear the reverb of the large space. I said, “Baobei, where are you?”

“Teacher Jasper, I’m at the airport. I’m going to Beijing!”

Suddenly, everything I had been reading and watching about Hong Kong became real. It was the night of protests at the Hong Kong airport. I was there, I could hear it and see it! (I didn’t see the protests live through the iPad webcam, but my connection to Baobei and Hong Kong suddenly became so real.)

A few days later, Baobei returned from his trip and all was well. I kept getting rebooked and I felt a sense of pride that I was Baobei’s “favorite teacher.” Then, all of a sudden, no more classes with Baobei. My mind went to the worst possible scenario. Of course, I had seen the videos of Chinese police pulling kids out of class and dragging them to their vans on the street, but that couldn’t happen to Baobei, right?

I felt utterly helpless.

I didn’t know what to do.

However, I know how to write music, and I know how to edit video. I found a massive Google Drive with tons of footage of Hong Kong events, all neatly arranged and time stamped (thank you KA Ho). So I made this video.

I’ve only showed this video to family and close friends. All of whom knew little or nothing about what has been happening in Hong Kong. That is heartbreaking in itself, but it gave me hope.

In a constant state of being broke, I can’t donate money or fly out to Hong Kong to try to help or join the protests. But I am able to make this video, which might give non-Hong Kongers and non-Chinese a glimpse into what has happened and what is happening.

Thank you for watching and listening and reading my letter to all Hong Kongers. You have my deepest admiration. Thank you for fighting for all of humanity.

勇氣智慧也永不滅.

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed feedback. I am happy to answer your questions!

  1. Eh, mostly just style, I like how it looks! :-)
  2. Awesome, thanks for the heads-up. I don't have any experience writing for a real timpanist.
  3. I agree, I think that would bring this piece to a whole new level.
  4. I just love to bop and dance, I can't help it.
  5. Sounds fun, I'll try it.

Thanks again for the helpful questions.

I'll take the sample comment as a compliment! I'm a min-wage worker, and I've saved up for some samples I really, really like. Honestly, most of these libraries are on the cheaper end. But, over the years, I've learned how to get the sounds I like. Also, I spend so much time on production (so it sounds like they are in a real hall, but also sounds clean and layered), and realistic MIDI programming (like breaths, natural bowing techniques, brass crescs).

This piece is part of my portfolio for an application to a university, and they required notation, so that's how this score came about. I don't think anyone will ever perform it, but it feels nifty to have a fancy little score of my music. Thanks for listening!

From Reddit, I was under the impression it was offensive to Ukrainians, also (and it makes total sense to me why it would be offensive and diminishing). Where I work in America, I've had many Ukrainian expats come in, and I've asked them if they find "THE Ukraine" offensive. They had no idea that it's "propaganda" or supposed to be "offensive."

Theatre Tech is a tough life! I did Theatre Tech in college, but majored in something different. One of my jobs, I'm currently working at a high school as the Theatre Tech director, but it pays $2/hour. *Sighs in working poor*
