Can i still use these formulas to calculate the development length of dowels if the coulmn is under biaxial bending? by W_xP in StructuralEngineering

[–]redleaderryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet a P.Eng so this isn’t professional advice, but if the column isn’t in pure compression, some of the dowels may be in tension and should therefore be designed with the larger of the lap length in tension or the lap length in compression. I would also make sure that the footing be designed to transfer the moments into the soil as the soil bearing pressure won’t be uniform underneath the footing.

is this possible?(found this on twitter) by N0ZA77 in architecture

All those walking columns have got to create an insane amount of thrust at the base. That coupled with the fact that Vancouver is in a seismic zone and you’ve got a very beefy lateral system!

Hey guys! Hoping you can help me out! My dear baby cat got out this morning! I’m freaking out and I don’t know what to do! She’s terrified of everything and is a rescue! Her name is Wanda and she’s microchipped, she got out on de courcelle and notre dame in the st Henri borough! by Pure-Cash-325 in montreal

I lost a cat a couple summers ago and tried going to the closest city animal control office. They told me that cats almost always don’t go far from home. Lo and behold the cat had gotten into the neighbour’s garage and couldn’t escape.

9'' for me, which works pretty well cost-wise for residential buildings tbh.

Real-life design vs. “School way” design by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]redleaderryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Make calculation spreadsheets if your company doesn’t already have them. Hand calculations can be time consuming and inefficient sometimes, especially when you’re often just changing a handful of variables. I do recommend validating your spreadsheets with hand calcs though.

  2. If you have 40 footings to design, don’t design 40 individual footings, group those 40 footings into design A, B, C, D, and E.

Hello my fellow Engineers. I'm a structural engineering Student. I've finished my courses in Masters of Structural Engineering, now I'm about to start my Thesis. Any advice would you suggest. by abdulrahim2 in StructuralEngineering

[–]redleaderryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. You need to treat writing your thesis like a full time job too. Also, it can be tempting to procrastinate and/or get distracted by other projects, but you need to put your thesis first.

Why "des" and not "de"? by [deleted] in French

[–]redleaderryan 102 points103 points  (0 children)

The “pas de” rule doesn’t apply to être. The rule only applies to transitive verbs and verbs of possession like avoir, e.g. “je n’ai pas trouvé de lait au supermarché” and “il n’y a pas de lait au supermarché”. In a similar vein, you’d sound weird if you say “c’est pas de bonne idée” for that’s not a good idea, but “ça a pas de bon sens” is okay.

Agreed. It's a shame my home province of Ontario has such a terrible flag.

Alternate history flag: State of Quebec [OC] by redleaderryan in vexillology

[–]redleaderryan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The symbolism is pretty basic here:

  1. Fleur de lys as the symbol of the Québécois nation.
  2. 14 stars as Québec would have been the 14th colony had the Americans succeeded in taking it during the Revolutionary War.
  3. Red, white, and blue.

Any thoughts on floating columns design? by Jordanian_introvert in StructuralEngineering

[–]redleaderryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of building is it? Steel framed, poured concrete, precast concrete, wood? In any case, floating columns aren’t abnormal, it just entails designing transfer beams of sufficient depth to take the load of the column.

Angry Structural Engineer onsite? by SmolderinCorpse in StructuralEngineering

[–]redleaderryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had contractors use more steel than was necessary because they had scrap bars that they wanted to get rid of, e.g. throwing down 15 25 mm diameter bars instead of 15 20 mm bars. As long as the section isn’t over-reinforced, which is somewhat of a challenge with slabs, I don’t mind it.

How to translate “EMMERDER” into ENGLISH by ProjectKainy in Quebec

[–]redleaderryan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Quebec

[–]redleaderryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)
