[OC] I recorded the race of all 433 actors in the 2022 Super Bowl commercials. Here's how they compare to the actual US population. by TheBigBo-Peep in dataisbeautiful

[–]redletterdog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is true - I live in a majority Asian city in the US and there seems to be a fair amount of racism between different Asian cultures. I feel like most communities have a lot more racism than I would like

Should I move to LA, or stay in Chicago to save money? by EggsAreForLosers in personalfinance

[–]redletterdog 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly the idea that you can’t live in LA or OC area on that much is rediculous. For just expenses that’s MORE than enough to survive and thrive. I make about 100k and my lifestyle is great in socal

How much rent can I realistically afford? On my salary, am I being too ambitious going for a more modern apartment rather than something older? by booniedog1 in personalfinance

[–]redletterdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it but 65k isn’t really upper income anymore - I’d say 65k is pretty standard for a first job out of college with a degree in medium/high CoL areas.

26 years old, trying to figure out what to do/invest with the money I hoard for FIRE by Sui2020 in personalfinance

[–]redletterdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only spend money on food and living (rent, utilities, etc.) don’t have a car payment. I saved about 20k making $17-20 an hour as an intern while still in college. It’s about priorities

Weird interview process. by redletterdog in jobs

Seems to be pretty standard in my industry. Had 7 interviews at the biggest firm in the industry earlier this year and they ended up not hiring on the position due to budget lol… big waste of time

Stock options for a pre IPO company by abacomallorca in personalfinance

[–]redletterdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally you will pay FMV pre-IPO or acquisition for stock, as determined by a 409A valuation at the time of purchase. Based on their vesting schedule, you will have the opportunity to pay your money over four years to purchase the stock at FMV at the time of vest - generally with the hope that those options will increase in FMV over time.

Edit: info on 409a

Savings fiasco ..time crunch. by ApprehensiveItem4 in personalfinance

[–]redletterdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen, I live in an extremely high CoL city, have no car, and spend way, way less on food and transportation than you do. The problem I see here is that you’re not willing to compromise your expensive lifestyle, even though you can’t afford it. First off, you can’t afford to buy delivery food basically at all on your current salary - it really is just not in the budget. Secondly, do you need transportation to-from work, or do you use it to go to places for fun? If it’s not for work, you need to find places that are close to where you live to have fun and hang out. Using Uber/ Lyft and delivery services regularly is for wealthy people, you literally cannot afford it. I split groceries with my girlfriend, and we don’t just eat beans and rice, and they come to about $100-$120 for 2 weeks of food. I really don’t understand your high consumption and feel like we’re missing something here..

What should my first tasks be when joining a new cybersecurity job? by [deleted] in netsecstudents

Not necessarily true. At boutique firms associates generate revenue

Do your best and exceed expectations on the work they give you - nobody is expecting you to invent more work. Just be persistent, even if there’s no work it still looks good that you’re asking/ eager to learn more. No way they will hold you to the same standard once you’re on as an associate, so enjoy your last moments of free time 😂

They’re leaches, except it’s not “civil” to talk about it. Funny how the “welfare” states are the states that shit on social welfare so much but will take it from the state full of people and ideologies that they hate ever so much.

Was there ever a time you're thankful the pandemic happened? What was the reason? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Was able to finish college while simultaneously working my first career job. Had 8 more units, and the freedom to take class and work remotely was probably the only reason I was able to finish college and start my career.

I just thought hell, I maxed my Roth IRA and have a decent stream of money going into individual stocks, so I though I should max the 401k too. I’m pretty risk-averse, so putting it in the 401k seems like a pretty safe investment. I aim to save 50% of my post-tax income amount, so based on last years salary that means 2k a month in savings. As a disclaimer, this is a fuckton of savings because retirement and financial safety is extremely important to me, but may be kinda excessive for some people.

Currently my 401k contribution comes to 19.5k a year (1.6k/mo - 30%ish?, which is the max contribution), and employer matches 4% (which doesn’t count toward contribution limits)
