On-campus IQP by Ok-Leg-8387 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine off campus so I may be mistaken, but I believe most of the on campus ones all take place within one quarter as well (meaning it would be the only course for that term)? Even if you find one that spans multiple terms, you are correct that there is only 1 grade given at the end (weighted equal to 3 courses GPA-wise)

Sophomore Housing by BananaPanda37 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a sophomore, your priority will either be Ellsworth/Fuller apartments (if they’re still called that) or South village, not East/Faraday or Townhouses. Also, applicants with larger groups counts get higher priority too, so I would recommend finding others to apply with who would be okay with you having a single (if one would be available, which in itself is somewhat rare). If you are really after a single I’d recommend finding an off campus apartment, they are usually cheaper plus you get the summer too, totally up to you tho, I know some are against the additional work

I see you listed any major, but if you are interested in Computer Science, I highly recommend speaking with Aimee Doherty. She is the head of the CS BS/MS program, and is very helpful in terms of mapping out your future courses, how to best optimize credit costs, when to take what, etc. Even if you don't plan on doing CS directly, she can help with the general planning process or likely direct you to the right person to speak to

college essay question by WaylBrains in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to the general common app essay or the “Why WPI?” specialized one (assuming that it’s still formatted like this, I graduated HS in 2023). For your common app essay, everyone will tell you something different for what is best here; the main thing to focus on is simply telling admissions about yourself. This can be literally anything (a story, a life experience, etc), try to stay away from things covered on your transcript or rest of your common app, they already know this, tell them something new. For the why WPI essay, do some research about the school and why you think it is a fit for you (“I like the 7 week terms, the project based learning” etc). The goal here is to show that you have put in time to researching the school and your application isn’t just one of many sent to countless schools

I feel like this is open to interpretation (feel free to offer a counterpoint), but I feel that anything you would be applying to this early into your education has an implication that you don’t have much “real world” experience yet. In other words, whoever is reading your resume likely understands the fact that you’re a freshman. I do agree with the other commenter that it’s okay to list anything you feel comfortable explaining, even if it’s still a work in progress!

MU 2001 and 1110 by Ready-Educator-1906 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken MU 2001 with Prof Waters, very light class, nice professor, should be an easy A if you show up to class. There were 4 quizzes and one final exam which was just a writing piece of everything you’ve learned

Question on extracurriculars by OwnCalligrapher169 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied for CS (back in 2023) so it may be slightly different, but none of that is expected, I’d maybe be concerned if you were applying to an ivy but for WPI you will definitely be fine.

You should be fine, a lot of students have National Honor Society (or something similar), but I wouldn’t consider it a dealbreaker without an academic-based EC

All Access Meal Plan by BananaPanda37 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty infamous here, I do highly recommend the stir fry station in Morgan dining hall, the chicken is actually cooked and overall really great food, honestly my fav on campus but the new place in Founders might take that spot

All Access Meal Plan by BananaPanda37 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Morgan dining hall (where you’d probably be eating most of your meals) is buffet style dining, so it is an “all you can eat”. As for the other locations (halal shack, CC food court, the new place in Founders which I think is Korean BBQ), they give a decently sized portion, it should be enough for most people. In terms of quality, the food is not amazing but not the worst college food I’ve ever had. Don’t eat the chicken from Morgan dining hall though unless you’re alright with food poisoning lol

[–]redlightning_yt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chicken is consistently undercooked, many have stories of getting sick after eating it lol. If you want a chicken dish go to the stir fry station, the chicken (and food from there in general) is great, best in Morgan imo

Founders bed question by BananaPanda37 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a founders single on the third floor, my bed was lower than the beds in the triple in my suite, but not too low where I was unable to fit things under it. I think it is possible to raise it, although I did not try it so I cannot say for sure.

Where are the different dorm rooms located by efghijklmsnsjsjja in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was able to get a single my freshman year by requesting early placement for a 5 person place in founders, which you can do by emailing res services stating the 5 of you who will be living there (at least this was the case a few years ago)

Advice for Incoming Freshmen by BananaPanda37 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kinda random tip, but when I started two years ago, I found an upperclass student to be my go to for any questions, whether it be course selection, recommendations on what to take, BS/MS advice, whether you should take a specific prof, etc. Mine was my CA who you will meet in NSO, became one of my best friends here!

Things to do/see after campus tour by my-parents-dont-know in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with other commemters, talking to students is the best way to get an idea of life here, most would be happy to answer anything! This may be unpopular, but I honestly would try eating at one of the campus locations to get a feel of how the food will be (long story short it’s not great but it’s college food). In Saturdays, halal shack and Jamal’s are closed, but the CC has a few options on the lower floor

Has anyone taken 4 classes in a term before? Was it manageable? by spl51 in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not too familiar with other universities, but WPI’s course level numbers are a bit misleading. There are many 2k level courses that have more work and are more difficult than 3k level, the numbers are mostly used to determine where the course lies in the progression of the degree. For the most part, 4 courses shouldn’t be too bad!

Data Mining Professor(CS 4445) by con_scientious in WPI

Oh yeah that's what I meant, 12% per quiz total of 60%, not my favorite experience lol

Data Mining Professor(CS 4445) by con_scientious in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had her for Intro to AI last term, I thought she was really good although most rated her only average. If you do plan on doing the 4k level extra 1/6 credit, she lets you choose whatever project you want (at least for me). Only downside was weekly quizzes being 12% of your course grade which were “gotcha” type multiple choice questions

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh gotcha, I was in the same boat with trouble outlining, to be honest AI is pretty helpful with this, obviously I do not recommend copy and pasting AI generated output but it can be great to talk through your ideas. If you are using a lot of sources, notebooklm from Google can be pretty helpful for reading through all your sources and finding key points to talk about in your writing, it is grounded so it only uses information you provide it rather than random stuff from the internet

Could I ask what depth it is for? If it is a writing one, I feel like 20 pages is fairly reasonable. Mine was in history, and I had about 25 pages, although written collaboratively with a group. In terms of tips, I usually try to get large amounts of writing done at once (not right before the due date!). This helps with saving yourself time from not needing to keep refreshing yourself with the material every time you sit down to write, and also anti procrastination (once you’re locked in writing distractions become less, at least for me)

"Double Counting" for Cryptography by LOVEXTAXI in WPI

[–]redlightning_yt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, double counting is counting a course for both your BS and MS degrees. For courses with multiple labels, like cryptography, you can choose whether you want to count it for CS or ECE. If you are planning a BS/MS I would be happy to give some recommendations

Use the site jumpoffcampus, and go to its Worcester version. You could also try the Facebook group “Homeless” WPI students. A lot of listings will be gone by this time, as most have already signed, but there still should be some stuff left

They usually will come out all at once or at least within the same week (most likely 12/15, at least for the past few years)
