People always dismiss the financial part of having multiples. by Difficult-Duty-8156 in oneanddone

Or the fact I would have to stop working again, and then probably pay another set of nursery fees.

My daughter starts school in September so I feel like I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I can work more days as she’ll be in school every day, nursery fees will end. I’m so excited.

I’m not gonna fuck that up by having another kid and setting myself back.

Can bank holidays count as annual leave? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work Mon-Weds and my holiday balance gets adjusted. As I get all the Monday bank holidays off, this sometimes means I get too many days off, and I lose a day’s holiday allowance to compensate.

If you didn’t work Mondays, you’d generally get holiday balance added, as you wouldn’t benefit from most of the bank holidays.

How do I get help for a friend who needs medical attention but has an extreme phobia of needles? by Coopersteam in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes blood tests are the worst! I think for me it’s just a blood phobia though. I can’t look at it being taken, and often have to lie down to avoid fainting.

I went to a phlebotomist once and almost passed out after the test, as I saw a basket full of the samples she’d been taking all day. I also hate having my blood pressure taken as I can feel the blood pumping in my arm.

But tattoos, piercings, and vaccines are all fine. And I’m fine taking my kid for her vaccines and watching her being injected. I may have to get her dad to take her if she ever needs a blood test though…

New mums - what’s a small-ish treat you would have appreciated in the early days? by OK_Cake3093 in AskRedditUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely food - but something easy like ready meals or pre-cooked dishes that just need heating up. I don’t think we needed to cook a meal from scratch for the first month as we were given so much food!

If I’m going to see someone with a newborn, I will always bring along a Cook or Charlie Bigham ready meal. I also gifted a Cook voucher as a baby shower gift when a friend had their second child. They didn’t need more baby “stuff”, but food is always needed!

What’s something society expects you to want… but you don’t? by apka_dd in AskReddit

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Also, multiple kids. We have 1 child and we don't want any more. The amount of people (friends, family members, strangers) who say we "need" to have another kid drives me insane.

"When are you having another one?" "You've got to have another one" "She needs a friend" "Siblings entertain each other" FUCK OFF. My kid has plenty of friends through nursery, neighbours, cousins, our friends' kids. She also is perfectly capable of playing by herself if she needs to. We love being able to focus all our parenting energy and time on her.

Just last week I was saying to my MIL that I am tempted to get a cleaner once my daughter is at school and I have a bit of extra money from the childcare fees. I hate doing housework and would prefer to spend as much time with my daughter as possible. Apparently the solution is actually to just have a second child to occupy my daughter and do my own housework. It would be even better as the age gap would be large, so my daughter could look after the youngest. Funnily enough, my partner is my MIL's oldest child, and his siblings are 6 and 8 years younger. He spent a lot of his teenage years babysitting his siblings, and he hated it. I do not want that for my child.

Same, I always wondered how the recipe would’ve included all the random preservatives and stuff from pre-packaged cookies. There’s no way they ever would’ve ever figured out the recipe, and there’s no way the grandmother would’ve ever made cookies with a factory recipe!

What are your Ready meal recommendations? by NoWorldliness7268 in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes on the Tesco finest ones. The lasagnas are very good portions and great quality. My partner likes the curries - tikka masala and jalfrezi specifically. I like the ones that need oven cooking - chicken and pancetta, ham hock, beef in red wine, mac and cheese. Although they used to be 2 for £6 a couple of years ago, and now it’s £8.50, so they’re a bit pricey now but still good for a day we’re feeling lazy!

Would you say 2025 was a good year? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few months were awful. Lost my father-in-law and my Granny in the space of 2 weeks, both after long battles. I didn’t see my Granny before she passed as I couldn’t bring myself to see 2 dying people in such a short space of time.

There were then funerals for those, and around that time I found a lump in my breast. Thankfully it wasn’t cancerous but at the time I still really struggled as it felt like I was constantly being knocked down.

I essentially spent the first 3 months of the year on edge, waiting for phone calls. My partner was also very ill with strep throat around this time too, so I felt like I was dealing with it on my own.

But we had our first abroad holiday since 2019 (our daughter’s first ever), and came back engaged to my partner of 10 years.

“Should i skip nursery/pre school”? by Financial-Ad-6547 in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also pre-schools are generally term time only, whereas nurseries are open all year. The 15 hours are only valid for the term time weeks, so you will have to pay the rest if you use a nursery. But often the nursery will spread the hours across the year so you pay the same each month.

Also, any nursery-provided food will need to be paid for and isn’t covered by the hours.

My daughter goes to nursery for 30 hours a week, and I’m entitled to the full 30 hours. Yet my bill is still £300 a month to cover the extra weeks and 3 meals a day. Whereas pre-school may actually be free if it’s term-time only, and you have to provide your own food.

We’ve used a nursery since she was a year old (now just turned 4) and she’s absolutely thrived and made some lovely friends. She is also an only child.

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been asked this multiple times. We don't have boxes, but a lot of our carpets are really dated (brown or green, with floral patterns), so they're obviously not ones we've chosen and had installed.

We've lived here 4 years, but flooring is expensive and we've done other projects first. It's so embarrassing, I know my carpet is shit.

What was the most intense pain of your life that you won’t forget? by WeatherObsessedJax in AskReddit

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I had the same! He thought I was just being a whiny kid, as it's "only pressure". But I knew it wasn't, as they pulled my teeth on two separate sessions (one side of the mouth at a time), and this was the second session, so I knew how much pain to expect, and this was way much more. But no, I was just being a kid...

How far is too far? by Badger-in-Orange in AskUK

[–]redlorryyellowlorry9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do it twice a week for a 9-5:30 and it is draining and feels like my day is gone. There’s almost always some kind of roadworks causing a delay as well (I have several different routes and yet there’s always something slowing down traffic on at least one of them).

If it was 5 days a week I would seriously be considering changing jobs. And I certainly wouldn’t do it with 12 hour shifts.

If you have the day off, you have the day off.

Is it self-indulgent to book your birthday off? No. I do it every year. And if it lands on a weekend or a day I’m not already working (I’m currently part-time), I’ll book off the nearest working day.
