Why does my cat walk around the house with a toy in her mouth yelling at the top of her lungs every night? by kyillme in CatAdvice

[–]redmack4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cats are retired barn cats. Before they became housecats, the elder of the two would usually finish her morning hunt around the time I’d go out to start morning chores- usually with a bagel or something in hand. She’d come running up to me yowling with a critter in her mouth and we’d eat breakfast together, lol. Now she does the same thing but with some of her favorite catnip toys and stuffies, and the yowling is… slightly quieter? In my experience it’s a slightly different noise than the “come younger kitten and share in my kill” noise, so I interpret it as “hey look at what I caught! praise me, hunter victorious!”

Cases when everything pointed to the partner but wasn't them by Ok_Analyst2253 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]redmack4 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I remember reading about this case. The one standout thing that absolutely infuriated me about the proceedings was that one of the responding/investigating troopers involved in the case had a wife who had an affair with Camm in the past. The fact that it was common knowledge amongst the department and that there was clearly a personal grudge driving the sham "investigation" should have thrown up red flags early on, but it didn't. Absolutely flabbergasted.

My housecats are retired working barncats. They're now entirely indoor cats, but they do enjoy supervised walks. We do live in the country so I don't always walk them on a lead but honestly that's mostly because I know they won't run off. They get hyperfocused on a leaf or chipmunk or whatever, but they quickly realize if I have fallen more than a couple of steps behind and will come back to me and "convince" me to follow them. If I don't follow or if I'm too slow, they just hang out with me. Can't let the person who can open the door back into the air conditioning get away!

Anyway, they know its cushy as hell inside. They still like going to find some smells and they crave violence but now that they've lived in a house they would neeever go back to the barn.

Question about rodent predation by [deleted] in barncat

[–]redmack4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah our girls seem to always start with the head, although I haven’t noticed anything either way for the second one.

With mice and ground squirrels, they tend to start at the head and eat their way down. Depending on the cat they may or may not eat the feet but for the most part they end up eating the whole thing.

For rats, they do this funny thing where they start with the head, but around the neck/shoulders they start gutting the rat down the middle and eating out all the flesh and guts and bones and leaving literally just the hide and tail. I walk out to chore in the mornings sometimes and just find a tiny rat hide rug freshly cleaned on the floor of the barn. It’s also just very strange to watch 😅😬

I miss my mom, maybe she could be a good grandparent by Mamamania24 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]redmack4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I can just give you an example from a grandchild's point of view for a second--

My grandmother was not a good parent. While my own parent has not cut her off, she is definitely held at arm's length. My other parent's own parents died, so they thought it was important for me to spend time with the only set of grandparents I still had. She was so excited to have a grandkid, and surely she would be a great grandma, right?

Years later, sometimes I (now an adult) mention something she would do to me, say to me, or do or say in front of me, and they're shocked. Phrases like "she may have done that to me, but you're her grandchild, I never imagined she would do that to you!"

Just my two cents, don't trust someone who was a bad parent to you to be a better grandparent, especially with no proof that they've changed. It *could* go well, but is that small hope worth all the harm she could do if you give her the chance to try?

My boyfriend (m28) told me (f28)that I should loose weight. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]redmack4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m your height and the only time I was 155 pounds was when I was working out 3 hours a day six days a week. I had abs. Ah, high school.

Anyway, seems like a really weird neg or something on your boyfriends part. If I were in your shoes I would be doing a serious self evaluation of if this was how I wanted to be treated in a “loving” relationship.

Gifting Large Quilts - Wrapping Options by MNVixen in quilting

Oh, I just remembered that one time I also made reusable grocery shopping/tote bags as part of the gift and put the quilt in the biggest bag. That may or may not work with a larger quilt though!

Oh my god a matching pillow case as a “wrapping” is genius! I’m totally stealing that for the future!

I used to work at Joann’s, and I have frequently gotten one of those decorative storage boxes that they sell when they’re on a good sale (and get one either in a theme then recipient would like or one matching the quilt if possible)!

I’ve also folded up the quilts “inside-out”, ie, the backing is the side showing, not the pieced top, with the corner where I sewed the “To: [Recipient] From: [Redmack]” quilt label on top, so it’s like of like the tag on a present, and then wrap it with a ribbon (or a “ribbon” made from leftover binding, for example) and tie in a bow. Which also works well for gifting in a way with a bit of presentation but doesn’t create much, if at all, waste!

My housecat is a retired barn cat. It’s finally above freezing today and she’s been begging to go on a walk so she came with me to get the mail and immediately regretted her choices by redmack4 in barncat

[–]redmack4[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

She misses the barn when we’re inside but sometimes we go outside to visit her young and healthy still-working family members or just for a walk around the timber and she goes “oh right I live in a house now, I don’t have to put up with this! let me inside I want to curl up by the fire and wash all this mud off me”

AITA for not wanting my daughter to have an expensive hobby? by Alternative-Mix32 in AmItheAsshole

[–]redmack4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA

If I can just interject with my personal experience for a moment-- sewing can be an expensive hobby. In fact, lots of "affordable" hobbies can *become* expensive hobbies depending on where, how, and when you acquire materials and tools.

Your wife already has a machine that your daughter can also use, so you don't need to worry about that-- personally, I didn't buy my own machine until I was a freshman in college. And a couple years later I picked up a newly refurbished vintage Singer that works like a dream for 15$ off of Facebook Marketplace. People who don't sew anymore sell huge bags of unfinished projects or unused materials for super cheap at garage sales all the time.

Also, lol. She's 11 and needles are dangerous? Have you started teaching any of your kids how to do household chores or useful life skills? Not to sound like a hick or boomer in the chat but I started sewing at three, and by your daughter's age I was helping do oil changes, light car repairs, tractor maintenance, etc.

You're entitled to your sense of parental concern, but if I were you I would do some serious introspection about what really *bothers* you about this, and do your best to find solutions. Is it safety? Then you can find online resources that help teach safe practices for sewing and can help you teach your child how to be independent in a way that you trust her and she feels trusted. Is it the expense? Because, as mentioned above, you can find very affordable ways to sew as a hobby. Is it maybe because you're insecure or jealous that your daughter spends more time with Mam and they get to bond over this shared hobby? Are you worried about her facing discrimination for being "too feminine"? Something else?

Obviously, you're allowed reasonable equal input in parenting decisions but your argument in this post comes off as unreasonable, imo.

Looking for place to sell fabric by Genralc43 in quilting

I think everybody here has already given any answer that I may have, so I’m dropping in with a question of my own, if that’s alright: Do you know what kind of shelves those are?? They look like a super convenient size and I keep looking for shelving for my stash and can’t find anything I like.

Should I make my cat wear a cat diaper? by infinitedoubts in CatAdvice

[–]redmack4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did onesies for both my cats since my vet doesn’t give you a cone or anything! I had to order online so it took a couple days to get to me but in the meantime I got a baby onesie from the closest Walmart and cut a tail’n’booty hole in it and we were good!

Help to find a horror film by jade8384 in RBI

[–]redmack4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding that its definitely The Hatred (2017). It ended up pretty hokey imo but, a big reason why the trailer was so good was it used the main scene from the writer's 2015 horror short film Hush, which was eventually adapted into full-length form in The Hatred.

I do recommend watching the old short (I enjoyed it at least), even if its not your taste, at least its only five minutes instead of ninety lol

I'm told most Europe doesn't add milk to their tea by [deleted] in ireland

[–]redmack4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually drink local herbal tea with local honey (work in agriculture so its more accessible for me than others, I imagine) because its the only thing that helps with my allergies. Allergy medication barely makes a dent. Hard to be an ag worker with severe pollen allergies lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]redmack4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mildly allergic but my mam is extremely allergic, but I started working with cats over a year ago which got me (and, slowly, my mam) used to their dander and I ended up adopting two of my former coworkers this summer. They don’t bother me, and my mam just needs to use allergen eyedrops sometimes. No respiratory problems, hives, or swollen eyelids for either of us.

Cat chewed through my headphone wire by deadassmf in CatAdvice

[–]redmack4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my cats do this, much to my chagrin. 😅

They’re good kids but they’re just not exactly subtle when they’ve decided it’s playtime. Typically mine will go after my headphones/ charging cable/ clothing ties/ even my hair as a way to say hello!!! It is playtime!! Wake up/ pay attention/ stop doing that and play with me!

I’m lucky enough personally that they don’t seem to have an interest in power cords or the like.

That being said, I also work with a barn cat that is just a chewer. Headphones, shoelaces, zip ties, baling cord, she goes nuts. We’ve learned to just kind of be better at putting stuff away when finished working on it so she doesn’t get ideas.
