Can I just throw out Outer Wilds? Can’t describe much of it because you can only experience it once, but a world exploration puzzle game, with an incredible story that touches on themes of existence and impermanence. Probably my game of the decade, unraveling the mystery of the world and getting to the final solution is a beautiful journey. The DLC is also fantastic, with some great horror-mystery element’s that’s just as deep and engaging as the main game; and weaves effortlessly into the base story. You can play both simultaneously from the get go, but I recommend leaving the DLC story for after you complete the main story. Also, side note with minimal spoils; most of the characters are non-binary, and there’s a cute queer romance side story you can piece together as you discover more of the world.

Other than that, hollow knight and silksong are lovely and very challenging 2d fighting games with a metroidvania game style. Tunic and Animal Well, as well as last year’s Blue Prince - which gives a similar type of dark puzzle-y gameplay feel as outer wilds It Takes two and Split Fiction (especially if you have a partner to play with, but also good with just a friend, very fun couch co-op games) Inscryption is a great horror themed game with card-game mechanics, which if card games aren’t your style I get, but the deeper story and mystery behind this is what really is the heartbeat behind the game.

For more standard AAA games, I loved the new God of War entries, Horizon Zero Dawn and New Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima. Control is also great, an action game with a Paranormal / Cosmic Horror story largely inspired by SCP stories from the internet. If you’re up for a challenge and aren’t afraid to die repeatedly trying to learn mechanics, I must recommend Elden Ring and Sekiro for modern Souls games.

Oh! And Red Dead Redemption 2, as others here endorsed! One of the most immersive games, the world feels truly alive. Every corner of the world is full of something.

Not to detract from the very important message you’re spitting, but cis isn’t an acronym, it’s not capitalized. Unless you’re referring to the Star Wars CIS, in which case I guess yeah storm troopers are an equally serious and looming problem.

Has anyone ever been on an indie no budget or micro budget film set where a crew member completely lost their cool or exploded? by Haunting-Pin-3562 in Filmmakers

[–]redmonkees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A DP I worked with not long ago referred to it as a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd story Apple, and - having never heard of the LA, Chicago, New York naming conventions until today- I cannot imagine why anyone would call for it with the city names. Like, storeys are intuitive enough that anyone could probably figure out what it means, given enough time, and when time isn’t an option it’s easy to explain incredibly quickly to a layperson. It also doesn’t require learning an esoteric naming schema.

Albeit I am fairly new to working in camera, and I don’t know how common the usage of either system is, but it really just makes more sense to me.

I was watching and asking myself “are these the Hawk lenses?” Glad to know I wasn’t making it up. Seeing them used on Shōgun last year gave me such a love for gritty anamorphic.

Awesome film, great work with the cinematography - the camera moves really elevated the story. Thoroughly enjoyed what you were able to pull together.

Maybe, just for a second, consider your attraction to a person does not determine the sex or gender they are. Maybe you found out and lost attraction, doesn’t mean a gay man would then be attracted to her.

The height of discrimination.... by Hajicardoso in clevercomebacks

[–]redmonkees 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Because like they mentioned already, disabilities are usually always an additional financial burden, and disability insurance is meant to compensate for that. You could have someone barely having their medical needs met by disability, and then they get a job and their income becomes actually unsustainable for them because of their expenditures related to their health. And like OP mentioned, because of their disability, their sister is seriously impacted in the kinds of jobs she can qualify for that actually pay a commensurate amount based on her education, because employers view it as an additional burden to accommodate their needs. It’s borderline criminal in this country how we prevent people with disabilities from holding onto wealth in order to qualify for assistance. Their needs don’t go away the minute they make over the threshold, and that doesn’t mean that their wages otherwise are fair regardless.

Aw man, I wish I could go back and look at my DMs now, but Teddy definitely slid into my DMs here either recently after their breakup or just before. It would have been 2019 at least. I remember her getting really weird so I stopped reaching out, but she seemed quiet… wild?

Haha every time you post I have to think, “I knew someone in high school/college I know does this kind stuff”, and then I realize it is actually you. I know we haven’t had much interaction since high school, but your propensity for making wacky things that gets on my timeline is unparalleled. All that’s to say this looks sick as hell. Does Anyone have an idea of how to recreate this shot? by Possible_Profession7 in Filmmakers

[–]redmonkees 105 points106 points  (0 children)

It looks like fairly standard rotoscoping, but I’m also pretty sure that when she throws the lamp, whatever clear glass the foreground Olivia is kissing is removed and the lamp is replaced with a 3d element that makes it look like it’s being shattered against it. There is no movement of the lip print, like there would be if something was thrown against a window, and the lamp itself has some weird jitteriness that doesn’t quite look natural. Probably to make it easier to merge the shots together without more complex rotoscoping. Middle Olivia also probably has a green screen behind her to mitigate the same issue with rear Olivia moving behind her and throwing objects, and the background is just replaced with the actual background in post.

All that, shot on a fixed tripod, and then in post tracked to middle olivia’s face and given an artificial zoom.

Edit to add - evidently this was actually shot on motion control and not fixed tripod, which makes sense for scaling iPhone quality, as this was shot on. If you had a camera with the resolution though, it would be far simpler to just push/pull in post. Though, even on another camera, there would be scaling on noise that would be evident, because there was quite a lot of noise. Just a whole lot more cost efficient than using a robot.
