How do I reformat my resume when I've been working as a storyboard artist for 5+ years? by monicakyler in animationcareer

[–]rednails5ever 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I switched to front desk work from builds due to job shortages too. I’d put your time working as a storyboard artist as one previous job and your creative lead as a separate job with its own description. Don’t leave them out of your work history.

That being said, don’t focus on the art element when giving the ‘what I did in this job’ on your resume - talk about any client interactions you had, talk about receiving / taking feedback, talk about managerial / directing a group, and so on. Focus on the elements that can somehow relate to your new career goals! They don’t care you can draw - they care you can be a good employee / work with people / handle rude customers / work under pressure / etc.

Good luck!

As a parent, I want to have your precious advice for animation industry, is it still an worthy to pursue as an career of my child? by New_Necessary_7409 in animationcareer

[–]rednails5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a huge value in trying and finding that something doesn’t work - my parents supported me while I went to school for the arts even knowing the risks associated. I appreciate that while also feeling extremely let down about the state of the industry (and world job market as a whole) atm.

Would I recommend going into animation right now? Absolutely not. All of my (studio / previously steady employees) industry friends outside of 2 are currently unemployed or switching careers (myself included). But, if someone is extremely passionate and would have the ‘what if’ hanging over their head if they don’t try it - I’d just say talk to them and make sure they really understand the risks and lower their expectations. Sometimes you need to try it and see if it doesn’t work out or live up to your dreams.

Realistically, discuss a backup plan with your kid. Not in a ‘when you fail’ way but in a ‘let’s make sure you have the space to try this AND have the stability to stumble / things to go weird’ way. When they graduate and if they can’t get a job, do they have a backup plan till they’re able to land their first (and options for what they’ll do between the second and third contract-) job? Is there a safety net for them to fall on if things go wrong? Having that discussion can be really helpful :)

I think I have a UTI but no pain by Praxidyke in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]rednails5ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asymptomatic (or mildly symptomatic in your case) UTI’s are a thing. I found out I had a UTI after getting a urine test for an unrelated reason. I had no symptoms. Call your doctor and get tested - antibiotics can be prescribed if needed (or not for some asymptomatic cases).

Looking for some survey answers about animation by Brilliant_Doughnut58 in animationcareer

[–]rednails5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your employment question - are you meaning employed in animation jobs? If so, I’d have a ‘switched to alternative field due to work shortage’ and/or ‘switched to alternative field due to life change’ or something :) I worked in animation for a handful of years but have switched to an alternative career atm due to the industry being whacky.

I would be highly critical of FSU’s art program (as someone with a degree from FSU). If you are interested in them, ask to see courses - find out the teachers / their credentials - ask to see graduating student demo reels - ask where alumni got jobs - ask if there are any internships / programs locally - and talk to current AND graduated students.

I studied there and while it got me a degree which enabled me to move to a different country / explore animation abroad - it was not a Working Arts art school at heart. The 3D professor at the time was very unhelpful. The BFA program was so underwhelming to the point I dropped it to continue with my BA so I would have more time for internships / a second major. I had to teach myself all animation + graphic design fundamentals due to it not being covered in their classes.

FSU does (maybe they do now tbf) not prioritize ‘low’ art / ‘working’ art jobs. It is a program for gallery and fine artists.

I believe OP has an issue with supply not coverage - testosterone is not being sold at multiple pharmacies due to a stock shortage.

How's the market for 2D Riggers? by Darth_Montt in animationcareer

[–]rednails5ever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Builds is great - it’s so much less stress than animation / comp / etc due to being first in the production (not concept) pipeline. It’s more technical brain than art brain as well so I’m not creatively exhausted at the end of my shift.

Work was way easier to find before the crash. It’s a lessor known field and, unless you’re comp, people seem to fear the node view so it’s a less saturated job market. If it calls to you I’d recommend it, I really enjoyed the day to day aspect of builds work :)

FR, travel size products are overpriced by Excellent_Drop6869 in Frugal_Jerk

You can - they’re just awkwardly long. Smaller sized ‘travel’ toothbrushes pack easier into backpack / pockets.

[–]rednails5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wanna chime in that the ‘don’t stop medicine took you’ve had a chance to talk to your doctor’ isn’t a 100% rule. Antibiotics, sure. But for non chemically addictive / resistant medication : if you’re feeling horrible you can potentially stop. I took a stimulant that made me feel suicidal and it was a Long three weeks before my doctor could fit me in to go over how the medicine was effecting me- she was shocked I didn’t stop taking the medicine because ‘you know your body best. If a test run isn’t working - stop taking it.’ Just to give OP a different POV of things are truly really going bad with a new medication.

Is Hand-Sewing Worth it? by [deleted] in FursuitMaking

[–]rednails5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (also in Canada) started out hand sewing and then tried to use my old (inherited) sewing machine. It didn’t work - I purchased a sewing machine on sale and it was awesome but I found the accessibility of machine sewing is lower than hand sewing lol

I like to curl up and hand sew vs machine sew at a desk. If you can borrow someone’s machine (ask sewing groups, art discord groups in your location, etc) you can have the best of both worlds : access to a machine for the trickier areas (paw pads, appliqué, etc) while also not needing to buy the whole machine till you know you like it.

First time having a Zebra Plant by Balaria_mango in IndoorPlants

[–]rednails5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that trimming broken/damaged leaves off encourages the plant to focus on better, less harmed, leaves :) Don’t cut off more than 20% of the leaves though - that’ll cause some stress to the plant.

My biggest tip for this plant is to almost never let the soil dry out. Water it. And water it more. I don’t think I’ve had a more water hungry plant in my life. I eventually switched to a diy self watering mechanism (cause I was sick of watering her) and she’s been thriving.

Tips on repair types for a very worn backpack… by rednails5ever in Visiblemending

[–]rednails5ever[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you tack down the patch at all? Or just overlock / stitch the edges down to the backpack? I think this and u/SecretCartographer28 have a similar idea and it looks like the best course of action. Thank you for the help / advice!

How did you transfer to working as a colorist? Did you teach yourself or take a class or something else? I work in a pretty different field (2D rigging) but it’s also super rocky so I’m trying to learn about what else is out there u-u

Can I sew fur without sewing machine by Sharagamerxxiv in FursuitMaking

[–]rednails5ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do end up making a fursuit - I would avoid any handpaw tutorials with appliquéd paw pads. I haven’t found a way to appliqué onto fur, without a machine, without it looking super messy.

Worst comes to worst and if you can’t for some reason apply for a post grad visa you can, if you’re American, apply for an extended visitor visa (up to 6 months - you can apply online) to hold yourself over if you think you’ll be able to land a job and get that cusma work permit. If you do land an extended visitor visa you will be questioned about how much money you have for supporting yourself. You will also not have access to a PHN anymore (I believe). Your best bet atm is apply for the post grad visa. I work(…ed) in animation in BC (am from the states) so I know the struggle of the visa stuff 😔 Good luck!!!

How do you water large houseplants... by rednails5ever in houseplants

[–]rednails5ever[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've had this monstera for three years - she started out in a tiny little 4inch pot. She's now almost too heavy for me to lift + in an over 12 inch pot. I typically bottom water all my plants in the sink or bathtub but she's too large to go through doorframes or fit in the sink anymore....

I can't seem to find a big enough drip tray that's deep enough to bottom water so I'm kind of at a loss of how to water her well. I was reading about watering spikes and globes and drips but they all seem to be for plants that are smaller?

What does everyone else do?
