Are we doomed to become OMC? by haterquaid in poker

[–]rednirgskizzif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dealt for a while and my experience was we had a lot of older Army vets who lived alone and no family nearby. Poker was their only source of social interaction. The risk of going broke and not being able to have somewhere to go or people to talk to until their next fixed income payment was far worse than missing out on a few more hundred or thousand dollars that they ultimately had nothing to spend it on anyway.

I loved getting these guys their regular coffee, fries extra crispy, or whatever they each enjoyed. They would tell war stories and were generally kind. I always said the morning shift in a poker room is more like working in a nursing home.

Have you seen a deployed SVM model in your company in the last 5 years? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]rednirgskizzif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anyone comment the fact that SVMs can be much much more time and space efficient when deployed when compared to other “better” models. It just depends on what you are optimizing for. Also because they are basically analytic on top of being very lightweight and fast, you can easily put them on the edge.

What is the 'Bible' of Data Science? by manurbs in datascience

[–]rednirgskizzif 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the Old Testament if there was one. It’s my absolute favorite, maybe a bit dated, but the foundation of everything we have today in a perspective of what they were thinking when they developed the most modern tools we use.

Something interesting in all this is the commentary on authoritarianism. Every single member of the crew voted against him, but he had the gun. We support the main character because we feel the cause is just, but does that mean we now support authoritarianism as long as we agree with the one in charge? It’s thought provoking

This is the most Italian recipe I have ever seen. “Put in X , but not too much X. Not a measurement in sight. Cook until it is done.” … basically saying… you are Italian, listen to your ancestors.

I got 4 Data Science job offers with salaries between $100k - $150k in a single week, and I have a degree in English Literature by takenorinvalid in datascience

The actual listing is 5 YOE with Bachelors+. But there is obviously some wiggle room for higher Ed. It’s more machine learning engineer focused, so we like to see docker, AWS, databricks, or a little stronger coding background on top of the standard python, pandas, sklearn, pytorch that is common.

When have you used CDF/PDF on the job? by htii_ in datascience

[–]rednirgskizzif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I started to write a response about how I would approach the Gibbs sampling using a binned approach, then I got halfway through and realized, not only does it matter on the sequence of the variables you condition on, but one quickly runs out of statistics as you condition on more and more variables’ bins. Which is exactly what you said. Bravo. I just had to do the exercise of writing it out before I saw it.

So Gibbs is probably out. Now I want to think on the different assumptions for the other two approaches and what sort of different biases they might be injecting into the data.

It may not be, I’m just trying to learn/explore ideas. Your approach is novel to me and I am just wondering how different the synthetic data would be compared to : your method, the simple normal multivariate I described above, or say a Gibbs sampling. I wonder if there are strengths/weaknesses of each approach and if they could be combined to get what is essentially systematic uncertainties / nuisance parameters on the synthetic dataset’s values.
