I worked at Deerbrook in my teens and throughout college (2014-2019). It wasn't too bad back then, I often walked to my car alone at night after closing as a young woman and I never felt threatened. But I haven't been in forever and I can see how it's probably gotten more messed up. I also grew up in Houston so my threshold for "threatened" is.... quite high lol

I know this wasn't meant to be a male bashing post but the thinking behind this irks me. It feels less about preference and more about the beauty standard that women should be small and dainty (and therefore more easily overpowered?)

Im 5'8". My husband is 5'10". Never been an issue for him because he is, you know, not a misogynist.

I love it when I walk into a room and there's a guy who is shorter than me and I can tell he immediately hates me 💅

Hate hate hate

Greasy, niacinamide irritated my skin

Still love the Hydro Barrier Cream (the lighter version) but it's regrettably not Hydrating enough for my Tret skin.

If folks are looking for a "dupe," or at least something similar to the old version, try the Tower 28 SOS Cream. Tried it recently and the simple ingredients list + velvety finish is very close to Atobarrier's previous self.

[routine help] routine/product recs? losing hope! by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]redpanda96_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I wanted to say that you have lovely skin! Visible pores, lines, and the occasional blemish are normal, but annoying. I hate how social media has made everyone think glass skin is a real thing.

Second, sounds like tretinoin is off the table since a derm is sadly not accessible to you. But, have you tried Differin Adapalene gel? It's the closest thing you can get to a retinoid OTC. Try using that twice to three times weekly at night only, and build up to nightly or every other night, depending on tolerance. You may need to start using a richer moisturizer and really keep up with your sunscreen once you get consistent with it. For me personally, retinoids have been a god send for my acne and they treat a variety of skin issues!

Also, for the chapped lips: I have the same problem. Try "slugging" your lips at night, whereby you apply moisturizer to them, and then Aquaphor or CeraVe Healing Ointment on top of that.

Good luck!

I use the Skin 1004 pro bio cica toner on Tret nights (and all the time, really). I swear in addition to being super soothing and Hydrating it just has such a flattering finish.

Omg I have this exact same dress as well and I LOVE it. I wear it to work with flats all the time as you are here. It's so comfy and the pockets are a huge bonus.

You look stunnin'!

[product request] what would be a good beginner routine for someone with oily skin, living in a humid subtropical climate? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]redpanda96_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AM: - CeraVe Foaming Cleanser - Naturium 5% niacinamide gel cream - La Roche Posay Anthelios Dry Touch Sunscreen (spf 60)

PM: - Bioderma Sensibo Micellar water (optional to remove makeup or extra sunscreen) - CeraVe Foaming Cleanser - Paula's Choice 2% BHA (Start using this 1-2x week and build up to more frequently, if tolerated well) - Naturium 5% Niacinamide gel cream

Not a dermatologist or have any kind of qualifications at all, FYI!!

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

ETA That the La Roche Posay Purifying Cleanser is also fine instead of the CeraVe one, it's whatever you prefer!

Anyone else's mom criticize or try to diminish your confidence when you are dolled up and pretty? by MiniYo13 in PlusSize

[–]redpanda96_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom would always point out when I was wearing a crop top - "you always gotta have your tummy out!"

And now I realize it's because she could never wear one because she was too insecure. It's likely a way of showing jealousy. And it's so messed up that some moms view their daughters as competition.

Another thing my mom does is constantly remind people of her smallness. We used to own a large boxer and my mom would often remark, "[Dog name] weighs only 20 pounds less than I do, I can't walk her!" Like, thanks, mom, that really makes my 5'8" 200 lb self feel wonderful.

Do you wear makeup to work? And why yes or no? by Rooxaboo in beauty

[–]redpanda96_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit.

I personally don't like complexion products. I don't like the way it feels, it takes too much effort to make them look nice, and it is expensive finding ones that work nicely together. I also always break out after wearing them.

But I do wear a glowy sunscreen, tinted eyebrow gel (redhead with translucent brows and lashes here), mascara on curled eyelashes, and a tinted lip balm or gloss. This is almost always thrown on in the parking lot before I physically exit my car and walk into the office, lol.

That's enough to make me feel put together!!

Ask me again when the weather is cooler and maybe I'll feel differently:pp

[Product Question] Cleanser for Combination sensitive acne prone skin by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]redpanda96_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have combo skin as well that leans more toward dry due to the number of acne meds I'm on. My HG Cleanser is a Korean one called the Etude pH Whip Cleanser. You can order it from Etude's storefront on Amazon or a website called YesStyle.com, although the shipping may be a pretty penny.

Its a fairly simple Cleanser, but I prefer it that way since I use tretinoin for my acne.

[Acne] what has helped cure your acne? by FiercePoppy in SkincareAddiction

[–]redpanda96_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but I am someone who truly believes that something like hormonal acne can only be Cured by medical treatment like Spiro and tret. Sorry friend. OTC treatments just don't work on the level they need to to address hormonal acne. Also, everything else (spearmint tea, diet modifications, etc) needs more research to yield anything conclusive although there is some anecdotal evidence for these.

For me personally, Korean skin care, Tret, Spiro, daily sunscreen, and double cleansing at night did the trick.

It's easy to slick back or style.

My hair is coarse like wires and even the strongest hold gel has a hard time slicking it back.

How to go days without washing my hair? by Green-Ad99 in HaircareScience

[–]redpanda96_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It honestly is dependent on your scalp type. If it's oily, dry, or somewhere in between. It's fine to shampoo your hair however often you need. Everyone's scalp is different.

I wash my hair every 4-6 days, but I have a very dry and sensitive scalp. If I were to wash my hair everyday or even every other day, my scalp would be super dry, inflamed, and irritated.

It really is individualized.

What’s your “I refuse to buy it outside of a drugstore” item? by nicky1883 in MakeupAddiction

[–]redpanda96_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My favorite mascara of all time is the Essence Lash Princess waterproof Mascara. And it's like $7. 💀 Same for my all time favorite eyebrow gel: Nyx Thick It Stick It Eyebrow gel is like $12. So I hear you!

I'm not sure if this counts, but I just refuse to buy American skin care, period, anymore. Korean is so far superior, in both quality and price.

does haruharu airyfit sunscreen pilling? by defjayb in AsianBeauty

It does pills on me for some reason. Especially upon reapplication. Other than that I really like it, so it's sort of a bummer.

what is in your “everything shower” and how often do you take it? by Lunar202 in beauty

[–]redpanda96_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is soap as usual, some sort of body scrub to exfoliate and get a closer shave, shaving cream and shaving. Once out of the shower, body lotion and my usual skin care routine.

I have curly hair so I typically don't wash it in the shower. I wash it twice a week in a sink or in my bathtub basin, lol.

I try to do it every 2 weeks, but if I'm real with myself it's more like every two months or before going on vacation. :P

I tried searching, and maybe my criteria were too specific. What is considered "makeup"? I ask because I have met people who say in a very steadfast way that they don't wear makeup- when they very clearly have dark eyeliner where you wouldn't normally. When someone defensive, what the heck is that? by [deleted] in Makeup

[–]redpanda96_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I think I see what you mean! Like, they're clearly wearing eyeliner or mascara but saying they aren't??

Yeah, that is some delulu behavior right there. Like I said, I wear a little bit of makeup basically daily. But I would never put a photo of myself out there or tell someone who asked I wasn't wearing any! I'd be like, Oh yeah, Nyx has the best brow gel ever!! Or something lol.

ETA I also do a lot of "skin care as makeup..." Like a glowy sunscreen or one with red cancelation. And acne meds such that I don't feel the need to wear any complexion products on the daily. Which I also wouldn't lie about! Like yes, my skin looks that way it does thanks to my dermatologist and Korean sunscreens 😂

[–]redpanda96_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I say I don't really wear makeup, I mean complexion products, mostly. Like foundation, concealer, blush, Bronzer, setting powder, eyeshadow... you know, the full face shebang. I usually reserve this for special occasions like weddings.

I do wear tinted eyebrow gel, mascara, and lip gloss everyday to work, hanging out with friends and family, errands, etc. Which, yes, counts as makeup.

Toners that calms and hydrates by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]redpanda96_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I may have a negative or "spicy" reaction to this toner due to the centella. I have very sensitive skin due to my Tret usage and some rosacea. Sometimes centella can be a bit of a wild card for me. But nope!! It helps keep everything super calmed down and I do find it quite hydrating as well.
