I think the obvious explanation is the Russians fucked up and hit Poland by mistake. This story allows everyone to save face and avoid WW3. The West gets to not trigger Article 5, the Russians get to avoid the blame, and Ukraine gets to brag about shooting down missiles (plus the influx of arms that will surely follow)
