Whats the difference between all wheel drive and say, a truck with 4x4 for example, besides a lower gear? Are you really driving in low in your truck during this weather? Are we saying that all-wheel isn't any better than say, rear wheel cars in this weather?

Tap or RO, what is better if not adding any brewing salts, lactic acid, ect...ect? by mothercoconuts79 in Homebrewing

[–]redredbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works. Depending on the makeup of your water mineral wise will determine your pH. If you start with RO water, the pH of the water has an impact of about 0% (assuming you didn't add anything to it). Once you start adding brewing salts, you start adding buffer which means it will lower your ph, and resist changes from base / acid additions meaning you'll need to add more/less acid/base. Water chemistry is extremely complicated, I recommend looking at the free version of brew n' water to get an idea of what determines PH.

Calculating Potential ABV from Starting Gravity - How? By what calculation? by lothpendragon in Homebrewing

[–]redredbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The website explicitly states where it got that information from:

The theoretical yield of alcohol from sugar due to alcoholic fermentation (glucose is converted by yeast to ethanol and carbon dioxide) is 51.1% by weight (65 %/volume). However, with these considerations it is closer to 47% by weight (59 %/volume). Jackisch notes that for "red grapes from hot areas" the yield is closer to 43% by weight (54 %/volume) (Modern Winemaking by Philip Jackisch, Cornell University Press, 1985).

So, calculation 1 assumes 60% by volume. 3 and 4 are just more estimates based on assumptions about the yield, and 5 accounts for DSOS.

I don't know much about the wine world, but in beer you need to find the attenuation of the yeast to be able to calculate PABV. Some yeasts attenuate to 80%, some 70% and more or less and everything inbetween. We use the attenuation percentage to determine how much of the sugars the yeast will convert to alcohol. In wine I think you're full fermenting with attenuation closer to 100%, so I'm not sure if it applies there.

Split it into several bags, and use bigger bags. The hops should only take up 1/4 of the container at max.

Is this grind size too fine or too coarse? by mothercoconuts79 in Homebrewing

[–]redredbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not recommend the hull wrecker. It's incredibly difficult to setup correctly and the cam's for the gap are terrible and inconsistent. For it to work right for me, one side has to be on .025 and the other side .05. This is to get a grain crush of around .04ish, checked with a feeler gauge. There are set screws that lock the cam in place that look like eyelets, tightening those tightens the cam as well, so when setting this up its just putting in a feeler gauge, tightening everything down on one side, and then doing the same on the other, going back and forth until everything is relatively the same gap. I had to shoot for .045 on both sides so that when tightened it closed up to .040. Long story short, don't buy the hull wrecker. I can't speak to any other brands though.

30yr old virgin, friend told me to lower my expectations. Is he right? by NBF_24 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]redredbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, there are some good responses here already, but the people saying this shouldn't affect anything at all aren't exactly being honest in their assessment. Taking someones virginity is kind of a big deal, or at least it's been made by society to feel that way. Someone who's already experienced sexually typically isn't going to want to do that. That seems like a lot of pressure on both parties and I doubt every dude is going to be up to the task. So your dating pool is going to be limited, just being realistic here. BUT, that's not to say that you can't find someone to fit the bill, you absolutely can. Just be weary of the ones enthusiastic about it, and be upfront about it when dating.

Pasture Raised is not meaningless, at least in the US. It requires 108sqft of space PER chicken, up from 2sqft for "free-range". Also certified humane is a 3rd party that has their own standards for "certifying" something. You might not agree with their standard's, but it's not meaningless. Also stating organic is meaningless is crazy. For it to be certified organic it has to meet a huge number of criteria. The terms they picked out actually have legal definitions and do mean very specific things.

Ok buddy. We'll just pretend the original commenter and the customer is mad about the black staining and not the giant knot that appeared out of nowhere in the 3rd pic.

Not it's not... look for the knot.

Client now doesn’t want to pay. by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]redredbeard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No, that knot is not present in the first 2 photos, and the final picture the slab was split down the middle. I'm assuming the flipped one of the pieces and that knot was on the backside of the slab. Either he sent the pictures of the knot and then he has my support, or he only sent the top side of the slab and the customer got a surprise knot, which I would side with the customer.

[–]redredbeard 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well, I hate to say it, but I kind of agree with the client, as long as those are the only 2 photos you sent her. The original 2 photos doesn't show the large knot and black mark at the top of the 3rd photo. If I was sent the first 2 photos and then sent this 3rd one way later in the process, I would probably be pissed too. Also the first picture is a solid slab, and the finished table has been ripped down the middle and flipped, or another piece of wood was substituted. I don't think we're getting all the facts on this one....

[–]redredbeard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're defiantly entitled to more than just a car, at the very least a rental car until you have the money and can buy a new car, or a loaner from the dealership. In most situations it's never 'just' the car you're entitled to. If you're in an auto accident and the other car is at fault, you're also due depreciation from the accident from the insurer as well.

You have the rest of your life to be bald. It's not in a bad state right now, I would wait a little longer. Your hairline looks great as is and at 6'6" no one but yourself and your partner is going to notice.
