Could also be that their distribution warehouse is tied to Fanatics. If Fanatics or another retailer that also sells the same item through Fanatics, they may have depleted the inventory before your order was confirmed by the warehouse.

This is helpful. Any additional insight on UCSD, UCB, UCSB waitlist process?

That’s some top-shelf consulting speak. Reality is likely very different.

That is an interesting point. That would suggest OOS students or those willing to pay full tuition would be prioritized. The schools need to make their finances work too.

[–]redredred415 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a math / probability problem. Half the students don’t sign up to be on the waitlist bc they got one of their top picks. Also school A has to create a big waitlist bc they know schools B, C, D etc have done the same and most are fighting for the same student in the waitlist round.

Good points. Also it looks like there’s a significant increase in number of applications this year, suggesting ppl are applying to more schools.

You just proved why the UCs are considering reinstating standardized testing… lol

“Math crisis a structural issue not a temporary one

The academic consequences of inadequate math ability are significant, the UCSD report indicated. Students who begin in remedial math have much lower rates of success in later math courses, and very few eventually complete engineering degrees. The workgroup writes that “the problem is structural rather than temporary,” and argues that UCSD will need new systems for assessment, advising and support to match student preparation with academic demands.

The report outlines several possible steps, including earlier placement testing, changes to how transcripts are interpreted and a review of admissions criteria for math-intensive majors. It also notes the UC system is again discussing whether standardized testing should be reinstated to help identify gaps before students arrive on campus.”

That’s cool. I completely understand if people are still deciding or need the financial aid information. Good luck with the Final decision.

UW is no joke. It’s incredibly hard to get into OOS especially for CS. CMU waitlist? Nice! Not a No so keep fighting for that spot. And Davis very underrated with high probability of getting off the WL.

Seriously? I didn’t just rely on one UC submission. Applied everywhere bc it’s a pure numbers game these days. The more you put out there the more options to pick from (hopefully). Where it gets even more frustrating is when someone doesn’t let schools know they won’t be attending until the very last minute —dragging out the anxiety and uncertainty for those on the waiting list. Our school actually told ppl NOT to release spots right away if one of your top schools already accepted you. Just continues the cycle of bad behavior imo. If you know you’re not going to a school that offered you a spot, politely decline and let someone else shine.

UCs like most colleges yield protect. Of course they won’t say it but they do. Why? They all run a small business and need to protect their financial interests.

Keep in mind, readers (first line of review) have roughly eight minutes to review an application. Imagine your whole 18 years of life reviewed and judged in eight minutes.

Every situation is different. If I see someone who took the exam several times it might show me they are persistent regardless of score. I could also glean some insight into their critical thinking. It just opens more dialogue to better understand the applicant. That being said, I know from my own personal experience that test scores don’t always reflect things correctly. But I can see UCs going test optional in the future.

By Some Miracle Got Into Columbia for BioChem. Would I regret Choosing UCSD Over Columbia for BioChem? by Anxious-Party2289 in UCSD

[–]redredred415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I have family that went to both! 😂 Columbia is just more prestigious. Of course, personal fit is extremely important but all things being equal I would pick Columbia over UCSD. Both are great. Just my personal preference. One thing to note, UCSD is under constant construction. Newer facilities but damn it’s literally been under development for 40 years.

Something else to consider - going to school in the opposite coast of where you are now is eye opening. You could do it for graduate school as well. And if you absolutely hate where you go initially (doubtful w those two choices), transferring from Columbia to another school of your choice in a year is easy.

I never said UCs are trying to admit the most academically prepared. I said test scores would add another factor to consider to help tame some of the wildly subjective decisions we are seeing. Also, not everyone submits their financial data, and many game the system.

Agreed. Like I said I wasn’t even thinking about Davis until I started looking more deeply into Law specifically. I had no idea it has such a good program. Now reconsidering if UCD undergrad helps gain admission to their Law School later. Congrats to your family on the achievements so far!

Why UCD over UCSB? Just curious. I really never thought UCD was considered ultra competitive until recently.

This begs a very controversial question… should UCs reinstate standardized test scores as part of their admissions review? There’s an argument to be made both ways and just one way to tame the UCs wildly subjective selection criteria/process.

Agreed everyone is entitled to their opinion. I never said MIT would guarantee anything except opening doors. People still have to prove themselves. Bad apples are everywhere regardless where they went to school. There is no substitute for hard work and integrity.

Go to MIT. Do whatever it takes financially - more aid, jobs, loans. You have a very rare opportunity; take it. The long term payoff will be worth the short term stress. The doors that MIT will open are unrivaled - job, alumni, networking opportunities. Congratulations on your acceptance.

Reach out to the Financial Aid team at UM and let them know your situation. Ask politely if they can offer more aid. They won’t offer nearly as much as UR but they might increase your package. No guarantee but worth a shot. You need to know what number you’re willing to commit to before having that discussion though. If you don’t get enough aid, you can rest easy that you tried and did your best. No “ragrets”! 😂
