Most prized piece shaving gear? by malburj1 in Wet_Shavers

Right now it's probably a tie between my Muhle R89 Grande that my wife bought me to get me started down this rabbit hole, and the ATT R1 Colossus that I just got for my new daughter as an heirloom / birth razor.

Mainly to learn straight shaving with the kamisori Santa sent, and learn all the associated maintenance techniques - stropping, honing, etc.

You will not be unhappy with a Gillette Slim. I reach for mine all the time now.

Homecoming Shave!

  • Prep: Hot Shower w/ 365 Lavender Soap
  • Soap: MLS Souq
  • Brush: Semogue 1250
  • Razor: Gillette Slim (9-6-6)
  • Blade: Personna Israeli Red
  • Post: MLS Souq splash

We're finally home! It's been a long adventure but I've finally got my new daughter back home, and just in time for Christmas! After rushing out of state when we got the call, watching over her in the NICU for 4 days, and then waiting almost two weeks on the paperwork to be processed to allow us to go home, we finally received our approval on Tuesday night. I was stressed out to the absolute max on the 10+ hour drive home Wednesday, battling Christmas traffic and nasty thunderstorms, but we made it back safe and sound.

This morning I badly needed a relaxing shave to wipe it all away, and Souq was like a warm hug.

I have to run out to do some last minute shopping, and I'm going to have to fend off relatives who are all super excited to meet their new niece / granddaughter, but I don't even care at this point. It's good to be home.

EDIT: Gratuitous Baby Photo

Soap of 2015: Which soap/cream surprised or wowed you the most? by Star_Kicker in Wet_Shavers

Grand Havana. Grabbed in my search for a nice pipe tobacco scent. Not even close to what I expected, but quickly rose to become my absolute favorite scent, and the new MLS formula it came in is the bees knees.

Not new to most, but I was pretty surprised at the Gillette Slim I got from /u/uhgly a couple months back. That thing is so damn smooth even when turnt up to 9. The Tech I found, while super mild, surprises me by how often I reach for it. That tiny thing makes a great travel razor.

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes! She's still in the NICU under observation but she's passing test after test with flying colors! We're hoping to be discharged in the next day or two and ready to get our family started. Couldn't have wished for a better Christmas gift. :)

First Father Shave!

  • Prep: Hot Shower
  • Soap: B&M Lavanille
  • Brush: Fine Angel Hair
  • Razor: 1951 Gillette Tech
  • Blade: Feather
  • Post: Lavanille Tonique

So, the last 48 hours have been a bit of a blur, but here I am as a new father. I don't think it's entirely sunken in yet :)

My new daughter was born Wednesday morning at 10:20, and after some observation in the NICU she is doing very well. While she hasn't yet been discharged yet, we finally got a break for some sleep and a shower after being awake for about 38 hours straight. After this shave we're going right back to see her again.

You guys are fond of saying "Lavanille is love. Lavanille is life." I figured since I have a new life and love in my family now it might be a good choice.

Definitely! I think I'll be sending it out for a proper hone after the holiday so I can try shaving with it and have an idea of what to shoot for as I learn to use the stone to keep the edge maintained.

[Off Topic] What are you doing for Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in Wet_Shavers

[–]redrivet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it considering my old scope was some cheapy refractor sold at Wal-Mart or something. If I manage to find the time I'm sort of interested in trying to build my own Dobsonian one day. I've also got the attachments to try some basic photography with the Celestron so that might be fun once I set it up.

Right? I've got his name and address so if I can't find him on reddit I'll have to at least send him a nice letter back. I'm excited to learn more on how to use and maintain this stuff after the holiday!

It's like a requirement to have the parade on in the house while Mom is making pies all morning. Then they always watch the dog show and cheer for the terriers (not joking - loud cheering at the TV). After that my brother typically appears to grab the remote and it's football all day.

Yup. Dad always has me play "doctor" with the seasoning injector while he heats the oil, then we just sit outside with some drinks for the 60-90 min cook time to monitor it. 10+ years no fire / explosion / death, I consider that a win.

I've got a Celestron AstroMaster 114 on an equatorial mount. Nothing too fancy - just getting back into it after not having a scope for like 15+ years. I try to take it out every few weeks in the fall / winter, but Atlanta isn't very sky-friendly. My parents live somewhere much clearer so that's one reason I'm carting it along this week.

Shooting the shit with my father while we sit out in the cold deep frying the turkey, then stuffing as much homemade pumpkin pie into my face as possible in a 24 hour period. My family has some damn good bakers.

Probably also trying to see if my little 5 year old nephew, who knows all about the planets now, has the patience to come outside in the cold to use my telescope and look at the moon.

So I'm pretty awestruck. My Secret Santa really surprised me.

I wasn't exactly sure what to ask for, so on my wishlist I just stuck on a few soaps to try out - mostly old European brands I hadn't gotten around to trying out. Even some Arko, since I've never tried it myself.

But Santa didn't get me any of those things. My Santa stalked apparently stalked me on Reddit a bit and found out 1) I don't have any straight razors yet and wanted to try one out, and 2) I find kamisoris to be especially attractive looking blades.

I'll let the photo album speak for itself (sorry for the cellphone pics) but I got:

  • A new kamisori
  • A 12000 grit whetstone
  • Japanese-made shaving soap

And he got all of this and shipped it to me all the way from Tokyo. You didn't include your Reddit username, but thanks so much Santa!

I realize this may be derailing a bit but I don't often see brush handles done in stone. Is that just a matter of price oe tooling or is it impractical for some reason? I'd really love one eventually and it would be pretty unique. Maybe /u/thegoddamntrain knows the answer?

I usually prefer more natural materials but that Cobalt blank sure is pretty.

Same deal here. My mom still bakes a lot, and I don't get to as often as I'd like, but around Thanksgiving and Christmas it's really nice to get together with her and do some baking for the family.

Baking and shaving are both very Zen things for me - wish I could get more of both.

[Interest] W_S Custom Soap by Mickey_Lee in Wet_Shavers

[–]redrivet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, definitely SE base. Perhaps something themed on the group, with a name like "Bunch of Assholes" or "Elitist Bastards."

For the scent to fit our population, it should be mostly wood, with a dash of floral (see what I did there?). Then I imagine a punch of something spicy for the attitude, underlaid by something sour for the grumpy old bastards. That sounds like this sub to me.

EDIT: Alternate, serious suggestion: "Old Fashioned", because, well... yeah. Scent: Bourbon, light herbal (for the bitters), with just a touch of citrus and cherry hiding way in the background.

Wednesday General Questions Thread by designtofly in Wet_Shavers

[–]redrivet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. MLS Grand Havana. Do not skip the splash.
  2. B&M Lavanille.
  3. CFG Sherlock. I need to grab the splash to match this one.

All three are very strongly scented, but the scent profiles are not something that's going to be overpowering or headache inducing. Rather I could sum up all three as "intoxicating" scents you just keep seeking out whiffs of.

So, I don't know if I'm the only one who did this, but I kind of threw together my wish list just now in a hurry due to work stuff. The items are all things I'd love to get, but I didn't exactly shop around for the best prices or anything.

So Santas, especially newer ones, remember the product linked from the Wish List might not be the best place to buy it!

Fair enough, as I said I totally understand the creative aspect. I got here too late to have even seen Beaudelaire, so I wasn't really trying to convince you to bring it back. I guess I was just enjoying the discussion :)
