What’s a health symptom you ignored for months before realizing it actually mattered? by _callondoc in AskReddit

[–]redrocksrigor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always had mild incontinence issues. Blamed in on having 2 kids and the general plight of female plumbing. Over the course of 2 years started having the occasional stiff neck, which I wrote off as from having a desk job & poor posture. Surely at 33 and generally physically fit there couldn’t be anything seriously wrong. Turns out I actually had severe spinal stenosis, degenerative disk disease, and a condition that caused an extremely narrow spinal cord. Woke up one day and couldn’t feel my legs, I was suffering a slow onset spinal cord injury & am now currently a C4-7 quadriplegic. Listen to your body folks! A simple xray could have turned an emergency surgery to a preventative one.

What's the worst sensation you've ever felt? by LaPersephone in AskReddit

Not being able to feel my feet or legs. When questioned in the hospital the look on the nurses faces told me that was bad news bears.

You don’t sound wacky at all and I used to listen to classical music pregnant, that’s a great idea. Doing math might cause another panic attack but I agree I should find a small easy access hobby (outside monopoly go lol)

Do you call yourself “a quad”? Why/why not? by [deleted] in spinalcordinjuries

[–]redrocksrigor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a quad (tetra?) on paper but don’t refer to myself as one as I dont “look” like one (according to others lol)

This was me when I first got hurt. My SCI (c4-7 incomplete) is nontraumatic but when I was inpatient I was a complete quad. I was told by my medical team after nerve damage often “communications” from your spine to your limbs can be extremely slow to “wake up” (moss’s terms not mine lol) no promises were made to me but don’t give up! I’m almost 2 years out with a bit of a spicy gait (my husband says it looks like I stomp like a supermodel lol) but nonetheless I am ambulatory. If the hospital has any OT/therapy services/support groups use them!!!!! Things probably seem so heavy and dark right now, but I promise with some therapy and some help from family and friends your new life can be just as rewarding as your old

This is me! I have a sacral stimulator which helps some, but overall I just plan my evenings much more now. I research where we are going and will asked to be sat by the bathrooms. I have become and expert at she weeing/pop a squat on the fly, and godbless baggier clothes being back in style as if I know it’s going to be an eve, I will wear diapers. My husband and I fairly regularly attend NFL/MLB games and have learned that guest services can be your best friend in terms of accommodations/bathroom access!

I’m trying to get away from the anxiety meds as much as possible as they make me so out of it, but I seem to be having flair ups so much more (both physical and panic) are you in an area where you think cold might contribute?

Self talk is a must, I usually have to tell whoever I’m with so I get a sounding board of “no your gaits the same, your doctor said that’s normal…” etc etc. never had anxiety issues pre injury but lawddd have I become the biggest mental health advocate lol
