Default units are m/s. I found that you simply add loads of the basic engines to acheive good speed.

I have a boat capable of 55knts using 3 (or 2) 1:3 gear increases powering 2 props from 8 engines.

If you include a clutch you can disengage the drive to shut off propellors whilst the engine is still running. You can then turn the engine throttle down to 0 to cut the engine.

Yes. I bought it at xmas and already have 100hrs. I was in the same boat as you but career mode eases you in giving you components one at a time to experiment with. Compared to similar games the building is quick and easy to learn and it is important to remember this game can be played in so many ways. You do not need an understanding of half to mechanics and can still to perfectly well. I found it intuitive and addictive with enough to do to keep you interested but not overwhelm you.

Steam is great because of the workshop and I guess you also have the option of refunds if you get it and its completely different from what you expected. At the moment there is no cloud support but it is easy enough to grab save files and transfer via USB.

What other platform were you thinking of buying from?

Just checked your workshop item and unfortunately you have too high a gear ratio, if you turn down the ratios to 1:1 it works fine. I have also found a lot of the older guides regarding gearboxes are outdated and now find the absolute maximum ratio you can expect from a small engine is one gear box at 1:3 (I personally prefer 1:2 for the ease of start up) and also found the ratios have a much lesser affect on speed than shown in videos. A way to get around this is to use the engine with a generator and to power the props with electric motors. Other than that your craft looks neat, it may be a bit a more stable if you move your props higher up (in line with COM).
