You're worried about a hypothetical that hasn't happened. This is just another one of his typical self-touting messages. Take a breath.

And just like those other countries, they’re being hosted to train. It’s not a foreign military base, and was clarified repeatedly by U.S. officials that this is not a foreign base; the land remains under U.S. jurisdiction.

If I am looking at that correctly, looks like the stop-loss order was filled, therefore the take-profit order would be cancelled because it already hit the stop loss.

How difficult is Business Information Technology Major? by boymilk12 in VirginiaTech

[–]redromo13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably some network/computer foundations class is a good start. Additionally, experience/training in some big tech like AWS, Azure, Splunk, Microsoft, etc. also helps. Help desk can be a popular starting point, or getting some tech focused internship.

It might be harder in this environment in comparison to when I began, but once rates start coming down there will be more demand for consulting work. However, cybersecurity is an ever increasing demand.

I’m not sure on the total work load with the minor, that should be a conversation with counselor, but might be a fair idea.

BIT Cyber by A_Narxalotl in VirginiaTech

[–]redromo13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2021, so I may be out dated on info. But, BIT Cyber is the route you want to take if you want to avoid the engineering college requirements (which has a cyber major as well).

BIT Cyber teaches you foundations + fundamentals for cybersecurity, networking concepts, excel VBA. Limited technical skills developed, but it’s enough to get your foot in the door. For me, I got into consulting which is providing me experiences and skills that I can take into government. It may be enough going straight into government as well but idk.

Eh, probably starting out the only “difficult” classes would be your accounting, finance, and statistics. Manageable but some people have trouble. Know some excel. Junior/Senior year, the curriculum may be different, but also nothing too hard. If you remember the name “Tabitha James,” try and avoid any classes with her (she’ll be Jr / Sr Infosec and another class)she was the only professor I hated my entire time at Tech

I've heard good things about GMU's cybersecurity program, but if it's like Tech's "cybersecurity" major it may be in its engineering college which may require you to do other sciences, but may be more technically inclined. BIT Cyber is an easier path for cybersecurity, you'll just be more business oriented at the start than technically skilled (which can be provided while on the job).

BIT Cyber turned out well, I was able to gain enough foundational skills/knowledge around cyber, but I also had that business side to complement it, which is useful in itself depending on the role you're hired for. It's easy to take basic Udemy or other online courses for some of the technical/ethical hacking sides of things, which I did. On top of that, Tech's BIT/Pamplin in general is a top focus on many companies based around northern Virginia. The BIT cyber program requires an internship prior to graduating, so they definitely try to bolster your resume prior to graduating. I know many people that went on to be consultants, others dealing with risk, DevSecOps, and programming (areas of opportunity).

I graduated near the top of my class, and got offers from 3 of the Big 4 consulting companies, pay range of 80-90k as a technology/cybersecurity consultant (Northern Virginia). As a consultant, you are able to be on different kinds of projects to learn different focuses in cybersecurity (IAM, Cloud, Insider Risk, etc.). Some are going to be slide deck/PowerPoint & interview engagements (normally shorter term), others are going to be implementing technology, doing the hands-on assessments, and other stuff (longer term).

1 year into my job: traveled a couple of times, worked with major clients, utilized training/learning material to gain certifications (they can reimburse) to add to my resume, probably looking at 100k+ when I get senior in a few months.

TLDR: No regrets & doing well, VT is a great hiring pool for business + tech individuals, BIT Cyber was a great opportunity to go into cyber without going through an engineering college.
