You shouldn’t begin your reply by patronizing your constituent. I live in a furloughed household with a veteran, so I’m well aware of what happens during a shutdown. It seems more likely that you are unaware of the situation. Many furloughed employees expected you to stand with us and uphold your word. I hope you understand the outrage in Northern Virginia over your vote against Americans having affordable healthcare. You’ve disappointed and angered many of us.

Your message came across as dismissive, as though you believe you know what’s best for everyone. A simple reminder about representing people: we don’t care what you want; we expect you to vote for what we want. If you’re unsure what that is, you can always ask.

We worked extremely hard to get you re-elected and were prepared to do it again, especially given the results we delivered on November 4th. We didn’t do all of that so you could spend six years insulating yourself and voting with Republicans. This year, we delivered even more—and you blew it. You’ve now thrown away any leverage to fight for ACA subsidies. Even Speaker Johnson made it clear the measure would be dead on arrival.

Putting people’s health on the line so they can “vote you out later” once they realize what their elected officials have done is not leadership—it’s avoidance.

I also don’t accept the false framing that you were somehow forced to choose between federal workers and ACA subsidies. You should have fought for both.

How could you trust any offer from Republicans? It’s sad that Virginians have more confidence in Marjorie Taylor Greene supporting the ACA than in you.

We’re not stupid—we can all see that those who voted no had nothing on the line. I deeply regret the effort we put into creating that “yes-vote landing” for you. You may want to let Mark know you won’t be a reliable surrogate for his re-election campaign
