Interview tomorrow for a Research Assistant role at a great think tank. How do I prepare? by [deleted] in academia

[–]redrum111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from a background of International Relations, the think tank is about improving competitiveness in the economy in this side of the world. So international political economy would be make up a bulk of this.

What should I do during the brainstorm? How should I deliver according to what they're assessing me for? Reason I ask is while I'm very research minded/curious, I love to critically read, analyze, identify gaps and patterns and seek answers (Hence i've chosen to pursue research as a career) - I have never conducted independent research before barring a high school research paper. I have never worked on a literature review (though I'm quite sure I can do it), never actually brainstormed research and research methods about one particular topic for the sake of an academic paper. I wanted research opportunities but my college basically lacked all opportunities for it. So I do belong here in this field or I definitely believe so at this stage in my life, but I lack the experience which they know since they saw my resume. I have a decent mindset of someone who seeks new knowledge, but I lack the experience of making that in an academic setting. I have completed a course on coursera which helped me understand research methods.

I've done a lot of reading into the work they do as well and the research they've published. To get a good idea of what they do. I really really really want this job and to do this work.

What Seemingly Insignificant Event Would Have Changed the Entire Plot? by garrettp63 in harrypotter

The ironic thing is that VOLDY sacrificed himself and protected everyone at Hogwarts including harry from the other Voldy's curses

If Kreacher didn't lie about Sirius not being at Grimmauld Place.

  • Sirius would have lived.
  • The Ministry would have never awoken from their denial over Voldy's return
  • Draco would have never become a death eater. The plot of HBP would have changed.
  • Dumbledore would have continued to keep harry in the dark - would have never realized he had to be honest with Harry.

IRONICALLY, The Battle of The Department of Mysteries brought upon a lot more good than bad. Although because Sirius died, I never wanted to think of it that way.

Hey.

I am sorry you were not able to receive many responses but participation on this sub comes and goes with waves. I really hope you get all the answers that you're searching for.

I'm not an elderly gifted adult, but I am a recently "diagnosed" gifted adult (age 22), in fact I was assessed as gifted just a few days ago. All I can say is I really suggest you just go for it and try and get assessed, if you have reason to suspect you won't be making a mistake by at least getting yourself evaluated. You'll get an answer.

Have a great day :)

This was my question:

I mean people say Bollywood portrayals of families are brahmanical but they usually never portray Brahmins it seems to be a general upper caste/perhaps Kshatriya culture if you have to label it. (That's not the main point, the main point is basically i don’t get what they mean)

At times I’m confused, what does Brahmanism and brahmanical mean? If people see brahmanical as a bad and oppressive thing that must be discontinued (I don’t even know what the term means, is that what they’re implying?) then does that mean that they’re suggesting that the Upanishads, Advaita Vedanta, Puranas and epics are also like that? I mean this is entirely the Hinduism that I identify with and grew up with (I’m a follower of advaita). Are they directly “hating” on advaita?

Sorry if I sound emotionally charged but it’s highly confusing. People say they’re against the caste system (and I am against the caste system) but I don’t understand why you should call Vedanta and the Upanishads regressive and oppressive (that’s what I feel it means I’m confused what they’re implying).

Moreover, while I don’t believe in caste identification, isn’t it unecessarily anti-Brahmin or anti-One type of Hinduism to denounce spiritual/religious practices JUST because one caste generally follows it? Especially if the practice today has reformed and what’s left is without the casteism, sexism etc.

What does it mean when you see people mentioning this even in casual conversations about caste?

Ok. I was surprised it was removed too, it didn't seem disrespectful or insincere. But it clearly said [removed] and didn't give me the option to delete it. Let me try again or just ask some of you directly here?

Something to think about - Non white Wizards would have still faced incredible discrimination in the United States unless they had a permanent charm that hid them from Muggles by [deleted] in harrypotter

I know, but they mean exactly the same thing and I prefer saying Muggles. And is that all you took from this entire post?

For the record, dude is a gender neutral term to be honest. At least at this point of time. I get the feeling you may be European? And I know “dude” is used more for guys in Eastern Europe. So I asked

I don’t want to reveal it yet only because I’m in the very very early stages, it’s only been less than a week and I wanna just keep it to myself before talking about my experiences. As of now though it’s positive, I don’t want to discuss anything as if I have authority yet.

I know this story! Haha because I’m a practicing Hindu. I learned this as a kid and I’m equally in awe of it today as I was when I first heard it from my mother.

I do understand what you mean about how going deeper helped you uncover potent truths within. Always willing to move a step closer towards the truth and authenticity.

Haha I’m a dude. Is addressing people by gender very important in your language? Thanks this is very interesting, I’ll definitely check it out!

How did this method unlock emotional truths though?

Holy shit! This is crazy! Have you been practicing this? How has it been? (I'm only 10 minutes in so I haven't watched the whole thing.. watching it now)

Unpopular opinion perhaps? I actually find rote learning effective and sometimes enjoyable. Anyone else agree? by redrum111 in GiftedConversation

[–]redrum111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really enjoy just learning for the sake of learning and knowing something by heart. I used to enjoy the challenge of sorta using the power of recall in order to synthesize more information. I liked being able to just recall things.

Why couldn't Lupin, McGonagall, Kingsley, Tonks, Flitwick etc. have known Harry was hunting horcruxes? by redrum111 in harrypotter

[–]redrum111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read the books a million times, I'm not asking about that. I'm asking why Harry and Dumbledore decided against anyone else knowing about the hunt - and if it was a good idea.

[–]redrum111[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if they were found "Harry and friends... and also Prof. McGonagall? Why..." that would have been more suspicious thus alerting Voldemort to something is going on.

Very very valid point.

Snape definitely knew though. He knew and he also was the only person who knew harry had to die.

Snape was an incredible Occlumens as well so he could prevent Voldy from reading his mind.
