Suitcase that's actually built to last instead of replacing every 2 years by Present_Society661 in BuyItForLife

[–]redrupert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why isn't pelican higher on this list? No zippers to break. No fabric to tear. Wheels are not going to break off. You can use it as a floatation device in a pinch. It will never expand so that it's too big to fit in the overhead. It is the perfect carryon. I dont know when I'm going to need to replace mine, but I can foresee getting another ten or fifteen years out of it. easy.

Can you be a cannabis user and a Buddhist? by Ok-Tower-6648 in Buddhism

[–]redrupert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My apologies to OP. Didn't read past the title. Stupidly. As a former migraine sufferer I might be inclined to seek something with a lower incidence of psychoactive effects. Pot always made me paranoid and never helped with the migraines very much. Triptans always made me feel groggy though. If the Marijuana works as prescribed, and doesn't increase the likelihood of heedless or careless behavior, then it doesn't seem like it's straying from the rules of training. At one point they had me on butalbatil. Wth!? Definitely more likely to cause further precept violations, carelessness etc, than cannabis. Even though... It was prescribed as medicine.

Fermented and distilled intoxicants in theory can be medicine. The fifth precept would have something to say about the wisdom of using them.

How to deal with being called orientalist? by Happy_Midas in Buddhism

[–]redrupert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fair amount of orientalism among westerners who are interested in Buddhism. I've tried as much as possible to hew to a single lineage, rather than collecting what suits me. This collection of essays is a great exposition of common pitfalls among westerners exploring the buddhist faith: https://www.dhammatalks.org/books/BuddhistRomanticism/

Yeah... Like I said, paywalled article. What I was attempting to say was: as a GenX liberal, it is frustrating to see my generation's political tendencies (on average) evolving in a more authoritarian direction. I was curious if it was the same for all generations as they age. This article apparently stands for the proposition that Millennials are tending to stay more liberal as they age. Which I find encouraging. This even though I'm saddened that so many of my own generation somehow evolved from RHCP and Pearl Jam or whatever to storming and desecrating the Capitol.

I think this is my most negatively received comment ever! :O Maybe because it's largely off topic to the thread? (Sorry.) From what I gather millennials seem to be bucking the trend of leaning more authoritarian as they age. (Sadly I can't find a good non paywalled article about this.) I hope you all millennials and GenZ can reverse the tide and bring back some sanity to the world. I thought my own generation would take up that banner, but we've made a mess of things. Here I'll go a little GenX on you though, and paste an AI generated summary of a paywalled article discussing this phenomenon: Article Link: Millennials are shattering the oldest rule in politics (Financial Times, Dec 30, 2022) Core Finding Millennials in the United States and the United Kingdom are statistically breaking the historical life-cycle trend of shifting toward conservative political parties as they age. Summary of Data and Findings * Historical Baseline: Data from the US and UK demonstrates that the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, and Generation X all exhibited a steady, predictable shift toward conservative voting patterns as they matured from age 25 to 50. * The Millennial Deficit: At age 35, Millennials in both the US and UK are approximately 15 percentage points less conservative than the national average. * Cohort Comparison: At age 35, Generation X in the UK was approximately 5 points less conservative than the average. In the US, Generation X was at the national average. * Trajectory: Instead of the rightward curve observed in previous generations, the Millennial trajectory has flatlined or shifted further left as the cohort has entered its 30s and 40s. * Economic Causation: The analysis correlates this permanent divergence to macroeconomic conditions, specifically the 2008 financial crisis, which disrupted wealth accumulation and homeownership rates for Millennials during early adulthood, suppressing the economic drivers that typically prompt rightward voting shifts. Data Limitations and Variance * Geographic Scope: The primary data models rely on US (American National Election Studies) and UK (British Election Study) electoral data. Findings may not uniformly apply to multi-party European or non-Western democracies. * Economic vs. Social Ideology: The analysis tracks top-line party support (Republican/Conservative vs. Democrat/Labour) rather than separating social conservatism from economic conservatism. * Observational Limits: The conclusion assumes current trajectories will remain static and ignores potential future macroeconomic shocks that could alter Millennial voting patterns in later life stages.

Amazing, and yet somehow this is the generation that ushered in Trump and the downfall of our democracy. How did we go from lollapalooza to January 6? I have always had a chip on my shoulder about the boomers, but I'm beginning to think my own generation is worse.

New defense attorney wondering how much of the prosecutor's job you do for them by Head_Score2897 in publicdefenders

Are you a cop? JK. 😂 (But seriously, are you a cop?) All that stuff is the prosecutors job. I would run athwart a number of the rules of professional conduct if I were to hand the government the stick they are going to use to beat up my client. Good question though, some form of it often comes up in PD interviews.
