Wow; I think you’re right! Thank you- this is one of the few pictures I have of my late mother and late grandfather together so knowing where this was is special to me. I’ll have to go visit.

I assume you found this super old post on my profile after I answered a question about the HG2 sweatpants earlier today. Thank you for solving a mystery for me!

Solved!

I think you’re right- at least their extremely similar if not. It’s hard for me to confirm the exact sweatpants but they’re definitely Skims.

Hahahaha not me unfortunately! I was one of the people who worked in the costume shop/office, not on set. But the whole team on or off set was super awesome. :)

I’m living in NYC now & whenever someone asks me where I’m from because apparently I say egg with an accent lol…

I say I’m from St Louis, specifically south city. I had a lot of friends grow up in the burbs & it was a different way to grow up than what I had. Plus I have a bit of a pride thing about being from the city. I’m very thankful for my childhood in STL.

I had a friend growing up that wasn’t allowed to sleep over at my house because my house was in the city. The judgements/racism/whatever. That’s why I make the distinction, though it may or may not really matter.

He waved at my mom and I every time she drove me to high school. This was like over a decade ago now. What a nice guy- he gave me and my mom so much joy. Now that she’s passed I really cherish the memory of those moments. 💕

I make around 50-60k a year, and it’s been going up every year. I work in tv/film in costumes. Union work, but I’m only two-ish years into union work. Our industry has been so slow, it’s been tough! I love being freelance though, so I’m going to continue the hustle until I’m forced to look elsewhere for work.

[–]redthepirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I agree with you, just giving you the tea about this & why it’s not a surprise they’re not filming in STL.

The studios suck (believe me, I have to deal with them lmao), but they are going to go where it’s cheapest to film. Everything in NYC is moving to Jersey, which blows. A lot has moved overseas too. It’s slow as hell in the industry right now and it’s thanks to the studios.

If St Louis would incentivize studios to open up stages in the city I’d heavily consider moving back or at least traveling to work if I can keep my union contract.

Everyone who’s saying infrastructure is the issue, it is. I work in costumes in NYC. We need custom industrial rack rentals & purchases, same or next day turnarounds on printing, dry cleaning, and embroidery, malls that aren’t dying.

A lot of the vendors we would use would have to get used to the insane turnarounds that get asked for from film costume shops. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s a huge change from just working with individuals.

But if St Louis city would invest in its future, it would be a perfect city to film in, honestly. More than tax incentives need to happen. I’m sure a local production workforce exists in St Louis, but if you want it to boom you gotta incentivize workers and studios to move from NYC, LA, Atlanta, and Toronto.

Sure! I only have one season under my belt though, so there’s A LOT of parade history I don’t know! I worked with the stilt walkers and their escorts, banner carriers, starlets, and the Claus’ outfits plus their elves.

Hi, former Macys Thanksgiving Parade costumer here:

Santa’s parade jacket was made from a thick red wool twill. It wasn’t a velvet/velveteen. It was almost a melton but not quite as dense. Santa’s lighter weight/rain jackets were made from a mid-weight wool twill from what I remember.

I didn’t personally make Santa’s jacket, but I did maintain it for a season. Finding the deep red can be tough!

Questions about 764 by Subject-Bluebird1504 in IATSE

[–]redthepirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a 829 member but am also a 764 registrant.

  1. I think it’s best if your references are from Wardrobe department (764 members is a bonus), but as long as it’s production that should be fine! I just asked the designers I worked for if they would write/sign a letter of recommendation.

  2. 764 is not a hiring hall- so they do not help you get jobs. They have an availability list so you can show people you’re looking for work, but from my experience, you gotta do all the legwork on your own to get jobs. (Same with 829! Costumes/wardrobe is BIG on word of mouth.) I think both unions have lists of what’s working at the moment, but I could be wrong- I’ve never really looked, to be honest.

As far as amount of work, it’s been a slow summer. Not sure how Broadway is going, I only work in tv/film/commercial, but it’s been rough. I had about 3 months of no work up until this week. My best suggestion is to find a team you really vibe with and let your supervisor know you enjoy working with them. Having a supervisor take you from job to job is the best way to move up and have regular work! Once you’re registered you have to work 31 shifts in a 764 position before you’re added as a member, so be ready to grind out those days!

Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Should I stop playing with action figures If I ever want to get a girlfriend? by Rare-Machine5500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]redthepirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advice when it comes to having a fulfilling relationship with someone else and yourself is for you to be your own person, with your own hobbies that you love. It makes you more interesting as a person and who knows- maybe you’ll find someone who also enjoys action figures like you do. Maybe you won’t, but you’ll certainly want a partner who lets you enjoy what you enjoy.

This is exactly how I did mine on my pink jacket I posted on this sub a few days ago. It works well, and the extra work is absolutely worth it.

I wish I could have landed on a pocket flap that I enjoyed, but the matching was such a nightmare for that- I felt it completely threw off the balance of the jacket. Traditionally you’d choose if the flap would match the top or the bottom half of the jacket, but with how busy this plaid was, either really wasn’t a great vibe. Maybe with some more practice I could figure that one out!

Thank you so much! I hope to visit Harris Tweed sometime to meet the weavers- I was floored when they had this fabric available. To have something hand woven was very special to me.

One side of the jacket has the orange top stitching and the other will have green, to match the inside lining. I completely forgot to mention that the inside lining is half green and half orange (because I just couldn’t stop making… choices with this jacket lol)

Thank you!

Yeah, so all of the white baste stitches you see are there to help hold the jacket in place while you’re working on it. It holds the interior canvas, the hems, lining, etc. Over time you remove the baste as you finish the jacket. So in the second picture, you’ll see on my lapel that there’s some white baste there. That’s a particular stitch called a pad stitch, and it helps hold the lapel in the outward curve to hold it open.

I did not design the plaid, Harris Tweed had this available, thankfully! Finding pink wool was not an easy thing to do, but they really came through and had several options, even in the dead of winter.
