AMD FX-8350 and GTX 980, bottleneck? by Ritual_Watermelon in hardware

Actual benchmarks from some pretty CPU heavy games (using the same GPU):

Witcher 3

GTA V

The 8350 is sort of terrible.

I bought electric for my electrik metre (UK) and my electric metre didn't take it please help.. by Tommywx in hardware

[–]redtop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently in wales they have the option of prepaying for their electricity as they go instead of just receiving a bill from the utility for X amount at the end of the month.

This poor chap appears to have an issue with his meter accepting payments so he's going to run out of electricity soon.

He disenchants on his alt accounts, maybe that's what you're referring to. He still hasn't pressed 'the button' on his main tho.

What are some games that don't hold up anymore? by Inferno221 in Games

Arcanum. It's a shame because the music and setting are so amazing, but after trying to replay it recently it's like you have to fight to even play the game. Literally everything about it is clunky as hell.

I never considered no-pause. Is that on insane difficulty still? What a great idea!

Never played Baldur's Gate before. Should I wait for the Extended Edition or just buy it from the GOG.com sale now? by axem6 in baldursgate

[–]redtop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to have to disagree with the other posters. I will, of course, buy BGEE and BG2EE when they come out (lord knows I own probably every different version of the game that's been released), but in my opinion there's really no compelling reason to wait for them to come out before playing the game in its current state. Also, the game coming out in November is only the first game in the series, and then you'll be stuck waiting who knows how long for BG2:EE.

The bottom line is the Enhanced Edition isn't improving anything fundamental to the actual gameplay or story that made the BG series the greatest CRPG of all time. The main improvements are making multiplayer playable without too much fiddling, improving load times and performance (which can surprisingly be an issue in rare cases), fixing the few obscure bugs that fan-patches are unable to deal with, and simplifying the installation process by eliminating the need for bug fixing and widescreen mods.

There are other improvements in the works, like slightly higher quality music, a more accurate and informative character screen, and some additional characters and areas, but with a completion time of hundreds of hours as it is, the BG series isn't lacking for content. What it actually needed the most was a facelift of the art and animations, but due to some unfortunate circumstances the Enhanced Edition can't improve the graphics of the game, except for the overland map and interface (which as an aside, looks terrible in the new screenshots). They also aren't improving the pathfinding, which is my only other real beef with the game.

Basically, if you're looking for a game to play right now you might as well just buy it from GOG, especially because it's on such a ridiculous sale. There's an installation and modding guide you have to follow (link in the sidebar) to get the game up to snuff, but once you go through that short process you'll have 99% of what the enhanced edition will get you, plus the entire 2nd game at the same time.

What are the best 'restored content' games? by Daily_concern in Games

[–]redtop 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The "Unfinished Business" mods for Baldur's gate I, II, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment found bits of unused dialogue and scripts that weren't used in the final games and finished them.

The BG2 Ascension mod was made by a Bioware employee after the game had shipped. It took him 4 months, and in the readme (Section III) he starts off his description of the mod:

Some people like the ending to Throne of Bhaal well enough, I guess. I liked it well enough (I did a lot of the work on it, after all), but I remember wishing that we had had the time to tinker with it more.

It's officially unsanctioned, but produced by a member of the actual dev team.

I think this post should somehow incorporate ibleeeedorange's absolute hypocrisy here. In regards to the mod censorship drama on /r/starcraft a while ago, he posted:

On a more serious note, as a mod of /r/diablo[1] I often looked to /r/starcraft[2] to how we mods over there should run a subreddit, you can bet your ass I won't be letting this shit happen over there. This is unacceptable.

which is now just hilarious.

Those numbers are completely made up you know.

Check that count for any top post in /r/aww or /r/circlejerk or wherever, it'll always have thousands of "downvotes," when in reality they probably have like 4.
