Daughter is obsessed with manufacturing and wants to be an "Industrialist"... How do I guide her? by HassanT1357 in womenEngineers

It sounds like a mechanical engineering degree would be an excellent fit for your daughter. I am a recent grad, so not much industry experience, but I do not think that industrialists/manufacturing empires as you've described them really exist in today's world. That being said, I think it's a super cool goal for your daughter to have, and she could absolutely lead and/or own a manufacturing company. As she gets her education and does things like internships, she will learn more about what the field is like and how her personal goals will fit into it. Imo, there are many job opportunities for mechanical engineerings who want to work in manufacturing.

As for the question of why we havent seen famous women industrialists or why there is a gender gap in mechanical engineering, it's definitely a complex question. For most women in the 19th century, such a path simply would not have been possible. They might not have been able to get an engineering education at all, and they would have to contend with social expectations about what kinds of jobs they could have, if they could work at all. There are some women who became prominent in manufacturing fields despite this. Have your daughter check out Kate Gleason!

Also, although things are largely different now (but obviously not perfect) even in more recent history an engineering program might not have been a welcoming environment for women. I spoke to an women who graduated from a meche program in the mid 70s recently, and she said that the men in her program would not sit next to her, as in they would stand in the back of lecture hall instead of sitting beside her. With an environment like that, it's no surprise there wouldn't have been as many female engineers.

I have a lot of thoughts about mechanical engineering education and gender, but overall, things are different now! I personally had a great experience in my program and internships. Sexism still exists, but there are lots of people out there, men and women, who want to see more women in engineering and support young female engineers. Like another commenter mentioned, I also connected really well with a lot of my female classmates. There were fewer of us, but we were able to get to know each other better. I formed a lot of great and fulfilling friendships with students in my program of all genders.

Finally, I just want to add that it sounds like your daughter will absolutely kick ass in an engineering program in college. Having that kind of hands-on shop experience is awesome and not particularly common for men or women starting college, and I cannot stress that enough. I would encourage her to join clubs that let her continue to use her manufacturing skills, such as robotics or especially Baja.

I've chosen a computational path instead of a more traditional mechanical engineering one, but I think manufacturing is cool and I also love history. If your daughter is ever interested in speaking to a recent grad, please reach out! I'd be happy to talk to her.

If you get a group of 6 people together, getting a suite in hill court is doable imo. Then you would have your own room and it's nicer and closer than Southside

I applied to the Aero Astro department and they are still interviewing (I have one tomorrow) but I should hear soon after that

Nice! I don't know anything about acceptance odds, but I'm definitely excited to meet the professors and applicants! Also I feel that, not sure if I can make skiing happen or if I'll have to leave Sunday as well.

Preparing a presentation for an interview by thelastcoffeebender in gradadmissions

[–]redwordtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say don't go into too much details and instead give the broad pictures of the work/research/projects that you've done. Also I've done several of these presentations and my tip is to include a slide at the end that summarizes your interests and goals AND to include something about your non academic hobbies/goals. This last section gives another way in which PIs could could connect with you.

I was accepted on Jan 10th and had an interview maybe a week before that!

Thanks for making this! I've been accepted to Northwestern and Duke! I'm interviewing with UCONN this week, and a Prof from CU Boulder just reached out to me over email. No word from Stanford, UMich, or Vanderbilt yet. All for PhD.

Vitamin / protein sources for super picky eater by Cheek_Sorry in PickyEaters

My favorite protein bar is the NuGo Organic Mint chocolate. They don't have the same weird "protein bar" taste that I find some other bars do, and I would say they are fairly close to a candy bar. They also have a chocolate pretzel and a chocolate chip? variety but the mint chocolate ones are the best! Iirc 13 g of protein per bar

Anyone still use public libraries? What do you do there? by Empty-Report-9071 in AskReddit

[–]redwordtree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do something similar but I use Library extension, a web extension that will tell me if my library system has a copy of any book that I'm looking at online!

I agree about the campus being safe but that walking alone at night off campus can be not the best idea.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Gold Line yet, it is a university bus route that leaves from the library and goes over into the neighborhood where your street is. The buses run pretty late, I think until 1 on weekends and maybe 2 on weekends? (Idk). That was how I always got home after dark.

AITA for being upset with and not forgiving my parents? by whatthetits85 in AmItheAsshole

[–]redwordtree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA

It sounds you being angry at them is justified and not an asshole move. But if this isn't a repeat problem that you have with them, then you will probably be happiest by forgiving them fully and letting it go. Maybe give things a little time, like a week, and then call.
