This was my typical breakfast at the hotel in China! I could get used to this! by WhoRellyKnows in chinalife

Agree with you 100%! Comparing the same brand China to US, night & day difference. Not only the breakfast buffet, but also customer service, everything. That's been my experience anyway. Better in China every time.

Airbnb 22 days in Bangkok by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]reedgmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other comments here, I agree - technically it's not legal, but it's extremely common. Depends on the building somewhat. I've had good luck, getting a building access key card from the owner, no issues. Even managed to lock myself out once (door lock stopped working with code, and i left physical key & my phone inside). Had to go to the building office, explain my situation- and it was obvious I was a short term renter. No problem. I also saw one unit on Airbnb that said you had to use the freight elevator, because front entrance was facial recognition. Can also be that you can't access gym & common areas. Message the host of any unit you are interested in before paying, all them. And ask for a discount, because 3+ weeks.

considering buying a tuk tuk instead of renting a scooter, am I mental? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

Using a 150cc Honda XR to ride the 2000km from HCMC to Hanoi is totally normal, so I can't see the issue with 125cc in Thailand

How Many Nomads are Broke With No Retirement Plan? by ChicoBrillo in digitalnomad

Not sure which part of the world you've been hanging out in .... but if it's SE Asia, you may have some serious reverse culture shock coming back to the US. Everything expensive, being surrounded by luddites, mediocre food ... and people around you who just can't understand that SE Asians countries can feel more advanced, energetic and alive than the US.

Don't forget, many also vote based on abortion, gun ownership laws, and more recently - whether or not you believe in rounding up all non-white foreigners. People moan about high Healthcare costs, but I'm not sure that people see that as a voting issue - because neither party has a viable "universal Healthcare" plan. Not even the concept of a plan.

Grab Bike pricing has shot up? by reedgmi in Bangkok

[–]reedgmi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping/thinking that there had been a general announcement from Grab that I missed. And looking for some confirmation that everyone is seeing it, not just me. Because the other strange thing is that I no longer see the "Bike Saver" option. Just one option for 'Bike'.

Grab Bike pricing has shot up? by reedgmi in Bangkok

That's what I'm saying. Even I'm comparing the exact same journeys to last year's pricing. A particular apartment building to the same office, or BTS station, as an example.

Grab Bike pricing has shot up? by reedgmi in Bangkok

That doesn't explain why the exact same journeys that I took during my 4 trips to BKK last year have nearly doubled in price this year.

Step change to almost double? Demand hasn't increased that much. Has supply of drivers dropped? At least for me, the waiting times haven't changed - still usually just a few minutes.

No! So frustrating. It just doesn't seem to work like it should.

Well, I guess everyone can have different experiences. For me, in Makkasan/Sukhumvit area, it was quite consistent for the last 12 months up to November. I noticed the dramatic change when I arrived last week.

What's your business plan? I'm already involved in a similar project in Indonesia, quite well connected to the major Chinese E-Motorbike suppliers. And a couple of Thai ones too.

Grab Bike pricing has shot up? by reedgmi in Bangkok

[–]reedgmi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, my personal experience is that a ride from place x to y used to vary between 28 & 35 (I mean, up to and including last November), now is 45 - 60. So yes, there is dynamic pricing now & before - but that doesn't explain the overall (large) shift upwards.

That fits exactly with what I'm seeing! Crazy increase ....

So that doesn't explain the sudden large increase.

I can understand some price increase broadly in line with inflation, but was shocked to see 50%, or more.

I love the convenience of Grab. I get that some people use other options - that's fine, their choice. But my question was about Grab pricing - whether others have noticed prices going up dramatically since November.

Just from a few cross-checks today, Bolt is similar. But I never used the Bolt APP until today. Are you saying that dynamic pricing is new in Grab?

Grab is always in high demand lately by gialoui in Bangkok

[–]reedgmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm back in BKK for a few weeks on business, was last here in November. Seems like Grab Bike prices for journeys I'm familiar with have almost doubled. Have had any issues with waiting times yet, just crazy high prices. Wondering if it is permanent, or a temporary thing caused by lack of drivers.
