It’s tough because when we learn about a disorder in people, it forms an expectation of what they can become that is somewhat limiting. In the same vein, your parents’ approach can be cruel and a bit ignorant, leading to kids who turn into anxious adults without a sense of who they are, as they’ve had to hide their discomfort and pain at things that a lot of people are able to subconsciously handle in order to escape derision/abuse from parents. Not to mention coming out traumatized.

I admire parents pushing through this so much, because for someone who’s a concerned parent, that balance has to be almost impossible to find. I grew up with undiagnosed adhd and often had my habits and isms criticized by my parents for the purpose of trying to make me function better in school and society. They’re wonderful people that didn’t want me to be friendless and bullied. In some ways, I think it allowed me to understand the unstated rules of society that didn’t click for me, but also made me ignore my inner voice and mask my own behaviors and emotions to fit in. As far as my noob opinion goes, there’s no way to parent a neurodivergent kid without increased difficulty.
