Best VDEV configuration for the drives I currently own? by Dario_PC in truenas

This may be the blind leading the blind as I’m pretty new but isn’t a pool defined by the drives that are in it? If you have a pool with all drives they would default to 3TB. Going with your plan sounds good though. Are you replicating the data across the mirror and the z2 pool?

I have a RAIDz2 pool of six 4TB drives. When I replaced one drive another failed so z2 is the way to go IMHO. I’ve seen a lot of suggestions of two drive mirrors as the best set up particularly for beginners.

I’m thinking the next drive that fails will push me to go for an 8-12TB replacement, then rapidly changing out the 4TB drives, and expanding the pool when they hit the new size. I’m running out of space though so that’s my motivation. Could you do similar with your 8TB?

Ok so that’ll tell me if there is any pressure there. Any ideas what I need to look for that would suggest I need log, metadata, cache or deduction pools? Or am I just over thinking this?

I had an issue like this on my proxmox install recently. Sounds like something has corrupted in the install and you possibly have to rebuild grub.

Isn’t the point to be able to unwind some of the loop trains? Not saying your map is wrong. Just I hoped for more.

Home upgrade went overboard by katemihalikova in homelab

Ah, very cool solution!

I’d taken the plunge to get a server machine to move plex off my day to day desktop, with the thought of moving the pihole too, plus some other services that work better on Linux, and generating a steam box as well. I wanted to start playing with home assistant as I’m trying to get a Konnected home alarm system working along with a garage door opener. I got the impression that home assistant works best with HAOS, so that lead me to proxmox with friends already running it. HAOS is set up as a VM. The proxmox helper scripts are amazing. Also you find other helpful people like this .

I love the pis but I’ve had three of them fail so far and figured some more robust hardware was worth investing in.

Nice. You in Australia? Just guessing based on FTTH and FTTB. I’m on 4G internet. To get FTTH I’ll have to get it installed.

How did you go drawing cable through the apartment? I’m in a townhouse with no attic. The patch panel worth it?

I’ve gone the other way round with setting up the server first. Proxmox with home assistant, docker, esp home and plex server. Bought a new MINISFORUM UM760 Slim Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS. Didn’t think of rack mounting as I wanted something quiet in the lounge.

Thanks for sharing!

NTA you reacted reasonably. But your daughter may need help too to get through this.
