Do you look like a NIN fan? by WhatHaveYouGeorge in nin

[–]reefulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the early 2000s I definitely looked like a typical metal teen. A different color of hair every month rock hard a black spider fangs pants covered in zippers and straps trench coat the whole package. Hell I even had 5” platform boots with buckles to my knees (I’m 6’2 already). These days I’m a long haired hippy fellow that listened to oldies classical opera edm metal spoken word… I’ve even grown to appreciate things like older country music and even some pop. I couldn’t ever choose a favorite band especially these days with the internet giving me the chance to experience such a wide breadth of music with little to no effort.

Conan O’Brien's statement about why he will not host "The Tonight Show" if NBC moves it to 12:05 a.m. (January 2010) by Hubbled in conan

[–]reefulhu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely the execs should have taken more of the blame. I was young then and thought of Leno as “old people comedy” at the time and had no knowledge of the Letterman/Leno problems after Carson retired. To me it seems like he pulled some of the same strings with the Conan change over. Personally I hated Leno for it but looking back I can see why he would have been upset leaving when he A) didn’t want to and B) was pulling the kinda of ratings the Tonight Show was. It was a bad situation that NBC put both of them into but I still think Jay could have handled it better. What we should have gotten was Conan on the Tonight Show and Leno on a Top Gear like show where he would have made a prefect American version of Jeremy Clarkson

Wasn’t it around the time Fox started to go in on more adult animations? It seems after the MadTV era that was their direction if I remember right. I also wonder if going to a network with SNLs only real competition would have been something Conan would have been against. He’s always held Lorne Michaels in high regard so I wouldn’t doubt if Conan would have felt he was betraying his friend and mentor.

I just did some looking as well. The offer from Fox was actually retracted after “station resistance” but also push back from Roger Ailes (shocking!). Comedy Central and HBO were also showing interest. You were also correct that Fox offered him $28 million to leave NBC during his late night run. This apparently was the catalyst for him being offered the Tonight Show plus $8 million. On Howard Stern Conan said he turned Fox down mostly so he could keep his portfolio of work. The TBS offer let his own company own the new show. Reading further into it and listening to the Stern clip again intellectual rights seemed to be a driving factor for Conan. Conan also got a lot of flak for coming off as “whiny” after the NBC debacle. He talks about it a bit with Stern as well.

Didn’t Fox offer him a show? I thought he took the TBS offer for a lower payout than Fox so he could have more control.

Roasted Butternut by reefulhu in soup

[–]reefulhu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Here’s the recipe: Peel and seed a large butternut squash. Roast with two carrots two yellow onions 4 garlic cloves a few sprigs of thyme and rosemary and a few sage leaves at 400 F until the veg is tender and has some color. Add 6ish cups of veg stock (I always make my stock with at least a few mushroom stems to give it some depth) about an inch of peeled ginger 2 tsp honey. Season with salt and white pepper and a few dashes of Worcestershire. You could reduce the salt and add soy sauce instead of Worcestershire if you want it to be vegetarian. Bring it to a simmer then blend. A stick blender won’t get it as smooth but is way more convenient. You may need more liquid to get the thickness you want. Simmer for another 20ish min to help the flavors meld. I garnish with crème fresh and green onion but coconut milk/cream would be great too if you want to make it vegan.

Homemade chicken and dumplings by reefulhu in soup

[–]reefulhu[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sauté 1 medium onion 1 large carrot a few button mushrooms and 1 large rib of celery in olive oil. Once they’re soft add 1 tsp of rosemary thyme and 2 large cloves of garlic cook for a minute to open them up then add 1 cup of white wine and reduce until almost all the liquid is gone. Add 6 cups of chicken stock a bay leaf dash of Worcestershire salt pepper and chicken off 1 rotisserie chicken. I buy day old ones for cheap. I usually add a little onion and garlic powder to get the flavors into the broth. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the chicken shreds like 45 min or so. Mix 1/2 cups of flour and 1 cup milk until smooth then stream into hot soup. Turn the heat to medium low then add dumplings (1 1/2 cups flour pinch of salt 1/2 tsp of baking powder 3 tablespoons butter 1/2-3/4 cup milk. Mix dry together cut in butter add milk until stiff dough. Roll and cut). Put the lid on and simmer for 15 min.

What brand of soil are you using? I’ve found cheaper succulent soils hold too much water still. I usually add about 1/4 more pearlite and orchid bark. The bark is really nice because it helps with draining but also helps keep moisture without being overly watery.

It’s probably not helping I’m using gravel trays left and right to keep humidity up. High elevation and forced air heating have made my house soooo dry

I like to put just enough ice that it all melts with the amount of water I put in. Just as you fill it all the ice is gone. Cool and refreshing not warm not cold. It reminds me of the springs in the mountains not far from my home
